  • So much more than a crayon!
Perfect drawing for beginners when new media can get overwhelming.
Oil pastels can tick a lot of boxes artistically; easy to use, inexpensive, bright and bold, forgiving and flexible.
There is a lot to love about this media and it’s a joy to introduce my students to them each year in my intermediate drawing class.
    Materials
Heavy weight paper (I used 140lb watercolor paper) canson I think
(bigger paper allows you to scale up and helps include detail) Not a good way to "sharpen" these therefore we utilize the small brushes to add any needed detail.
Mona Lisa odorless mineral spirits (speedball) can be found on amazon
    A few acrylic paint brushes
    Tissue for blending and cleaning
Pentel oil pastels (I like this brand but this is not sponsored)
    Pencil
    Eraser
Palette knife / or piece of plastic to scrape
Enrichment: I tend to explore the work of Georgia O'Keeffe when we are working with oil pastel and her work can be recreated with relative ease by student using this media. Her Jack in the Pulpit series shows her process from realistic to abstract work. Re-creating using oil pastels.
If painting scares you then this is a way to get a painterly drawing without the coat of oil paint or acrylic paint.
