In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 6,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 20 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com - Hry

OMG thank you so much for the return of the LEGENDARY Chris Tang and the other "Whatever, It's Asian" Commentator. They're by far the best.
The shitty commentary from all during the first 2 rounds was literally doing my head in!!
Please highlight or make a single video for Greentea vs Joseph, hands down the best match of 2019
Al Mack James Chen is the other commentator. He’s known in the early fighting game community back in the days.
Joseph vs Greentea was the best match in CTWC 2019
Grzegorz Krukar best match in all of CTWC. This round had the first ever double kill screen, the first ever maxout, and the first ever double maxout! Absolutely insane.
But that ending was so anticlimactic... gg GreenTea.
in history of tetris*
I agree completaly
best match in all of CTWC!
Greentea and I setting Official World Records...👀
Great job!
Good work dude
Joseph Saelee dude you guys are insane !! I thought the match with koryan was the best but shiiiiit
Hi
That was so exciting I was on the edge of my seat fidgeting the whole time. Double kill screens, first max out, first double max out... WOW
The accomplishment and the feelings of what happened was awsome to watch, Thanks! and Great work!
Poor Dan and Josh. They played a great set in it's own right, but completely overshadowed by one of the most legendary tetris matches in CTWC history.
Right??I've felt bad about them. Joseph vs Tea was epic tho:D
Totally! That’s why I’m watching this one again. SO SO SO good!
Legend has it that "there is still a game going on" between Dan and Josh ...
@@danielt.4330 this going to become a meme... XD
The thing is they’re getting recognition because of the legendary game
Greentea is so enjoyable to watch. Winning or losing you just know he's having an absolute blast
Greentea vs Joseph is quite possibly the greatest match ever played in CTWC history! History was made y’all!
that was super epic
also have to give props to brown vs board of education
Lee Ludtke pô
Announcers: Joseph makes history! First maxout in a match in CTWC history!
*very next match happens*
One maxout in a match? TWO MAXOUTS IN A MATCH
@@danatronics9039 TWO? THERE WERE THREE IN TOTAL COUNTING GREENTEA'S ONE
Greentea was like: "Hold my green tea!"
@@wohlhabendermanager And Joseph was like: Nah, nah, you hold mine first. Lol
Next milestone would be four three/four max out counting both the top and bottom match :O
Josh vs. DanQZ
The greatest competitive tetris game never watched
Gotta give credit to the commentators, they are the only suitable pair to cover the epicness of joseph vs greentea.
Boom!
Tetris for J...oseph!
Agree on that. I mean they transport excitement like no other can. This was a thriller through and through
Chen is here as always
@@spacecomplex7180 This is why I love when Chen commentates at EVO, His co-commentator for this CTWC is just like Seth Killian as well.
Joseph vs Greentea strap on your seat belts everyone
Can't wait for translation to start. Could not crave for better gift. :)
Strap on a harness cause that game is going high
still dangerous!after strap my seat belts~
Christopher Nguyen The magic school bus came on my head for no reason all because of the word seatbelt.
and couldve been the final last year too\!! these two are about to have a massive rivalry, espesh if greentea joins in to play CTM tourneys.
Never thought I'd see a Dragonball Z fight in Tetris but hot damn green tea vs Joseph was intense
It's over 900000!
@@Angultra Its over 999,999! :D
"I maxed out and still lost that very game"
Green Tea 2019
When greentea topped out at the final game.
Quaid in the audience: "Throw it Joseph!!!"
Man, I love quaid
He almost did when he miscounted the line score. Imagine the upset that would've been.
I thought it said it’s over XDDD
The craziest thing is, Greentea didn't maxout once during this year's qualifiers (hence his lower seed this year). But he somehow was able to pull one off under extreme pressure against the world champ!
Though if he had a higher seed and faced anyone else, it's likely he would have made it into the semifinals again...
SY Tang He probably got a bad board which probably had so many Ss and Zs and hardly any Is. I know it in him that if he had better pieces he would have got a max out in qualifying.
He might be one of those people who perform best under pressure.
Joseph is just too strong please anyone stop him 😢 (btw I missed premier of this match how bad)
That someone will be you next year! You are one of my favorite players, keep it up!
I was left breathless after your game 1 and 3 🤣
Great match Greentea! You should be very proud of your performance! Hope to see you take the title next year!
I’m ur biggest fan! Love ya
He reminds me of vaxei from the rhythm game osu. He is also really young and so good that you can have one of the best performances ever and still lose.
I LOVE at 19:49 when Greentea says, "Are you kidding me!"
Joseph v Greentea was my favorite match of the 2019 CTWC.
But Josh and Dan QZ had some pretty nice games, too! Also, Dan QZ is really great at doing interviews! Very clear and engaging.
James and Chris give awesome commentary in this match. They stay on top of both games, toggle back and forth nicely, and give relevant context where needed.
Thank you!
Greentea: Wins
Joseph: Revenge maxout
Greentea: Hold my tea
Joseph: I'm about to do what's called a pro gamer move
Commentators: And guess what! There's still a game going on up there
DanQZ: (knowing he has to face Joseph next round) (Chuckles) I'm in danger
my thoughts summed up pretty well there lol
Lol it is over before it even begins
It tastes like burning!
This is such an underrated comment
Game 3:
Commentators: "No other game has ever had the might... nay, the nobility, to achieve not one, but two maxouts."
Greentea: For even in maxout, you have become victories of Joseph
Joseph: Dread it, run from it, destiny arrives all the same
Joseph & Greentea is going to be a fierce-friendly rivalry for many years to come. Would not be surprised if these two trade Tetris championships every so often.
and then you have the likes of dan qz and batfoy as well~
the competition is gonna be fierce.
too bad mr neubauer won all these titles during the early years when virtually there was no such big competition to challenge him. That means his 7 titles might never be equalled or surpassed by anyone else ever in the game.
@@Albimar17 Not exactly. I think he still has a good chance of winning another victory or at least getting to the finals. Joseph is also human and just like everyone makes mistakes. Just that Jonas will play relatively safe and slow as he played before and if he gets a sufficiently high lead before level 19 he has a chance to win with him, and I assure he is capable of it. After all, the title of seven-time world champion is not just for show no matter in which years he won it. In addition, Greentea, like Jonas, is also not a hypertapper and yet he is still able to keep pace with the current champion.
@@lanthiandokenhennes1805 That's true. I'd really like to see a rematch between Jonas and Joseph. Although Joseph has been practicing a lot and I hear that Jonas doesn't like to practice Tetris a whole lot before the tourney. There's a relatively new vid that came out by Joseph that had him make a 700k pre transition, and got max out at 23. If he keeps up like that, he doesn't really need to hyper-tap til the kill screen and it'll be hard for Jonas to keep up with him. Guess we'll have to see.
@@aradamichaels927 12 max out for 2020 qualifier
But then rolling was invented
I feel sorry for the other two competitors at the top. They were overshadowed by Joseph and green tea’s amazing performances
Arselan Madlol The winner of that match is going to get creamed by the winner on the bottom.
@@therainmakerinsider I wouldnt put it past Dan to score a win against Joseph, he’s been playing exceptionally well for a newcomer
I think it was 3 to 1 Joseph.
10:17 aight that t tuck was insane ngl
I like to think that whenever Joseph pulls that off in a game reality gets fractured by +0.1%. It's legit insane. Wtf
How does Joseph do this!! Nothing but respect to both greentea and Joseph
GREENTEA DID EXACTLY WHAT HE DID LAST YEAR BUT INTO A MAXOUT HOLY
I BET HE MISSING THE LINE ON THE RIGHT IS A TRICK FROM HIM TO GET US MORE EXCITED ABOUT THE MATCH
I watched his analysis, he lost das for the last line so he use das+last second tapping to make it through
@@tonymok535 Oh, thanks for the mentioning. Missed it, luckily it is still early enough that it is up in twitch past bradcast.
29:39
That extra DAS tap for the tetris and maxout is probably going to be one of the most memorable moments in CTWC
JinPyo cus that’s what green tea seems to know best - da extra tap
I legit can't stop watching this match. It's legendary
Extra tap vs tappy boy, a battle for the ages

Don't mind me, just back to rewatch the legendary Greentea vs Joseph match
Joseph in game 2: okay a 900k wasn’t enough, time to go for a 1.1
Also, are we not going to talk about Joseph’s KILL SCREEN TUCK???
I didn't even know that was possible.
@@Kiirabu197 It's quite easy to be honest.
However, I don't understand How he do T-Spin in kill screen
@@Helder_1 hahahahaha 'quite easy'
@@Devp278 yes very easy compared to some of the other things Joseph has done
Imagine being Dan and Josh and having to play their decider game with all the chaos going on
Jeeesus man... That was insane!
Ever since he came on the scene, Greentea was instantly my favorite player. Such a great attitude and of course the facial expressions and the smiles.
Joseph getting all the Greentea hugs, I also want some!
Everyone’s talking about the double max out, which is incredible, but can we acknowledge that Joseph maxed out TWICE in 5 games
yes. 4
Well I mean he has maxed out 3 times in a row so
19:48 greentea: "are you kiddding me????"
Phenomenal play from all 4 competitors, especially Joseph and Greentea! I will always be rooting for Greentea, but if you have to be defeated in a tournament, there is no better way to go than the performance be showed here!
Shout-out to the commentators, too! Really top-notch commentary on this particular round. Glad to see it! I think this video is perhaps the best introduction someone could have to the world of classic Tetris, and both the players and commentators play a huge part in making that a reality!
josh is a hell of a player he is way underestimated
What makes josh so spectacular to watch is his highly risky way of play. Many dirty tetrises or center wells above level 20 without hyper-tapping. Unfortunately the risk playing is a danger to top out.
@@Phistra the reason he doesnt get as much attention is he plays way too risky and makes a lot of I dependencies while playing
Kamanchuisdabomb but when he gets that I it’s hype. Nothing gives me a good oomph like seeing a dirty asf Tetris
@@Kamanchuisdabomb What you call an I dependency he calls a potential Tetris
All I can say is "WOW"! One of the greatest matches I've ever seen. Joseph & Greentea are both such incredible players! I feel honored just to watch this replay on CZcams, being able to witness Tetris history!
I love greentea
Who doesn't? :)
He is just playing tetris, while enjoying life. That's how it should be
Wait aren't you supposed to be cubing why are you here
He's an international treasure. If ever aliens will visit this place, Greentea should be humanities ambassador.
22:10 that clean by greentea is something so satisfying
Not gonna lie, hearing these 2 commentators back again is music to my ears after the last 2 trainwrecks. Nostalgia hits hard
Greentea: Wins with 910k score that went to level 29.
Joseph: Gets two million point games in a row.
Can't wait to see the Jonas and Heather commentary vid on this epic match
I don't know how but @ 29:39 Joseph seemed to react to both the misplaced piece AND the clutch move right after! Somehow he's mastered the "periphery vision" peek/glance. The Tetris meta is evolving...
That quick tap by green tea to max out was so clutch just like in his 2018 CTWC match against Jonas
The Joseph and Green Tea matches are so amazing to watch because not only are they incredibly skilled but you can see they’re having fun and are so happy for each other.
29:56 Joseph actually toped out at the exact same moment as Greentee with only a 2 tetrises lead, that's probably why he looked shocked there :)
joseph just scored the first vs max out in the history of ctwc.
and that's not even the highlight of the video
36:43 "THROW IT JOSEPH THROW IT!!!"
Ooooh, the most hype match of the tournament!
Congratulations to Joseph and GreenTea, two of my favourite competitors. Both players went above and beyond every expectation and delivered us some truly amazing matches.
GreenTea's tucks, Joseph's microadjustments. GreenTea's lovely and bright smile, Joseph's positivity. Two insanely good players who really love the game, what less could we expect?
The matches were not only high-leveled, but they were delivered to us by two players who are so passionate and so invested into the game, that managed to transfer to us the excitment and even the joy they felt, simply through a screen (I can't even begin to imagine what it would've been like to see it live).
Congratulations to Joseph for the two Maxout's and for managing to take multiple games in a row from GreenTea, an accomplishment that I have a feeling many won't recognise.
Congratulations to GreenTea for the Maxout and for taking the first game from Joseph by pushing him into the killscreen, pressuring the young world champion.
Joseph and GreenTea are two of the best Ness Tetris players, in my opinion, with a deep passion and love for the game. I believe that when against each other they also pushed each other to their absolute limits, and even more than that, in a way that I haven't seen many opposing players do. Neither of them could put on the breaks for a even a second, even the slightest mistake allowing the other to catch up.
Once again, congratulations to Joseph and GreenTea.
giorgos giorgos Couldn’t have said it better myself. Love both of these players, and their chemistry really added to the joy of watching them!
mochitori I absolutely agree
i love everything in this video. Chris Tang and James Chen with Joseph and Greentea. Perfect
Those matches between Joseph and Greentea were everything I could have hoped for and more
Glad to see Chris tang sporting the Houser wig this year
1. I love these commentators
2. Everyone did so good in this, I didn’t know who’s game to look at
3. Am I the only one excited to see the possibility that Batfoy might go against Joseph?
4. If there was a team competition, Greentea and Joseph would be OP.
4. I never thought I’d be so hyped about CTWC. I was a Puyo Puyo Tetris fan and somehow ended here, and now I can’t stop watching!
Green tea doesn't make mistakes. He has happy little accidents!
Love that guy!
I’ve been wanting to see a joseph vs greentea match ever since i watched them last year and I’m so happy it happened this year!
Joseph is having such a blast playing greentea. This is amazing.
I love how you can hear Joseph's laugh at 19:50
Jimin Panda right after Greentea shoutout r u kidding me!! Lol
These players have to get some clothing sponsors next year.
Quaid got a Pabst Blue Ribbon sponsorship
Lmao it sounds like Quaid.
Joseph seems to perform the best when he’s under pressure, like the other player beating him in the first game or being behind on points during a game which makes him push harder, and Greentea really pushed him!
Its a very rare ability, I watch his streams sometimes to and hes certainly not above getting frustrated at times sometimes even often, though hes still always fun and likeable, but then when its tournament time he just goes into some weird like mayweather gear and is border line unbeatable, I think only Richard has beaten him a couple times in online death matches-which arent the same stakes I think if Richard were at this event Joseph woulda beat him to,and Koryan has played Joseph 3 maybe 4 times in tetris Monthly tournament finals and is the only one to beat Joseph and he did so one time, Joseph then won the next 2 straight times and hes just about the only player in the world who can make Koryan not look totally invincible.
Danny Madness That’s what I’ve noticed! Most people choke in tournament but Joseph seems to play better in tournament than at home by himself which is insane. Also the fact that he’s only participated in like 3 CTMs and won 2 of them, both against koryan no less! Although I would say he’s close in skill to Koryan and Richard as they seem to take turns winning games 😆 It’s probably more down to the type of rng they’re getting when doing these online matches. It’s just that Koryan and Richard chokes in real-life tournaments and Joseph doesn’t
@@melody720 Yeah pretty much man its very impressive, and you could see how much more confident he was this year to he wasnt just crushing he was having genuine fun you know, but while remaining humble its quite a sight to see.I know Jonas is still one of the best in the world-I love Joshs style but I mean hes not better then Jonas yet look what happened this year ya know! so dif factors at play Jonas will be back, but can Jonas on his best day beat Joseph probably not.and his confidence is only growing before his 18th birthday no less.
And Koryan himself has improved at least times 2 since last year he used to be a great player but his style if you remember was just score as many points before I top out usually far before the kill screen back in 2017-2018 now hes way more complete and just a monster he can beat 99.9 percent of players at any given time at any tournament, and yet Joseph and only Joseph somehow makes even Koryan look not insanely perfect ya know, not that Koryan cant hang or beat Joseph on his best night himself given the same rng and etc,but I think you know what I mean, sometimes the gap between 1st and 2nd is just that great again il use a random boxing reference mayweather fought back in 2009 a mexican legend named Juan manuel Marquez, and Mayweather shut him out I mean embarrassing wipe out 12 rounds to 0 poor Marquez didnt win a single second of a single minute of a single round, and yet even as good as Marquez fought that night had he faced anyone else hed likely have won but against Floyd Mayweather and only Floyd he could hardly land a meaningful punch all night ya know, thats the difference sometimes between 1 and 2 and the rest, and right now Joseph is that #1 and is that good.
I love how greentea is always so joyful, fairplay and even hugs Joseph even when he loses the game, such a nice guy everyone wants in its life 🤯
Greentea when Joseph Max outs: “ARE YOU KIDDING MEEEE?!”
I died
36:48 gotta love how joseph smirks looking at greentea's score, that's cheeky but lovely reaction
I'm glad that I watched so many other matches before this one so I could fully understand what I just saw. This is without a doubt the greatest match of Tetris ever played
I could watch GreenTea and Joseph play against eachother whole day. You can tell both their love to the game and that they are having fun.
I love Dan's awkward humor in his interview 😂
This is one of the greatest matches in Tetris history. So stoked to rewatch!

Well, that's why Greentea didn't take 2nd place: bad luck with sortition.
i hope this is not a spoiler.
MrKelso82 not really he’s saying green tea shouldn’t have been on the same seed side as Joseph.
That's why you need to get a good seeding from the qualification to avoid the big guys, and also for the big guys to be placed in different quarters.
