This theme is perfect for itachi. His character was fishy from the start. They portrayed him as an evil guy but with a hint of goodness. In his first appearance in the show, he beat kurenai and kakashi but didnt kill them, beat sauske but let him go again. Even in his body double form against naruto and kakashi, u could see he was holding back. It was pretty much certain that time, that he wasn’t a bad guy, there is definitely some backstory.
He's still a bad guy. That man murdered a whole bunch of people. Whoever murders their parents is not a good guy. He gave no one a chance to run away or give up. He's just as bad as Darth Vader.

For people who judge Itachi. Sure killing your parents and helping destroying your clan is cruelsome but there is far more depth than that. He was a spy for hidden leaf being extremely loyal to the village, caring about the people and overall having good intentions. As time progressed he was forced to make the decision and he had to choose between two evil circumstances. None of the choices he was given were to have positive outcomes. His clan while being discriminated decided to take over the village and Itachi was absolutely against it. He tried to negotiate with his father and openly hinted about his disgust about that plan. Itachi wasn't alone though. Shisui had the same ideology as Itachi and noted that coup detat would cause a civil war and resulting in much greater casualties than the whole Uchiha clan. He planned to prevent the civil war but Danzo sabotaged that also. Leaving him no choice he decided to act based on his beliefs and acting out in the best interest of the Hidden Leaf. Hiruzen's passiveness had also great impact on the situation resulting in Danzo acting on his own. Itachi knew he would be considered traitor both in the eyes of the Uchiha and the Hidden Leaf, yet still decided to do what he did. He continued being a spy by joining the Akatsuki and provided information to the Hidden Leaf (for example stating the goals of the organization to Kakashi). It provided significant impact on Naruto fate because Hidden Leaf could now take action, preventing Naruto to fall into enemies hands. Imagine you are deeply involved in the politics of the village and play significant role in its actions. You're extremely loyal to that village and are convinced that the path of your family is wrong. Will you let coup detat happen, kill innocent people, take side of your parents and abandon your beliefs? Or you do your duty as a patriot of the village and deliver "justice" to its enemies despite them being your own siblings. Sadly, both decisions were doomed to be tragic and contained a lot of suffering. You need to be really in Itachis shoes to understand the suffering he went through. The things he did weren't good but he solely believed that it was for the better. Sometimes in life we have to make a decision and never look back.
