How the pandemic distorted time

  • Our perception of time is incredibly malleable - no wonder the pandemic upended it.

    There used to be this thing called a party. The concept was simple - gather a bunch of living, breathing bodies in the same place at the same time and just see what happens. And if my friends wanted me to be on time to a party, they’d lie.
    I wasn’t proud of my reputation with time. Once, someone was describing their color blindness to me and it reminded me a lot of how I feel about time. How I know that 3 pm and 3:05 pm are technically different, but I personally don’t perceive that contrast.
    I tried my best to banish those thoughts. I bought clocks and set them to five minutes early. And I was finally closing the gap - becoming one of those people who holds the reins of time. And then - the pandemic happened.
    And suddenly Tuesdays were Thursdays were Sundays. The whole world joined me in temporal disorientation - even my punctual superiors were at a loss. They knew how to arrive five minutes early - not how to repeat the same five minutes 43,854 times.
    Maybe we’ve all been too fixated on keeping track of time when what we need most is vocabulary to describe the new colors of time.

      @khazms Před 3 lety +19

      That's because your brain doesn't retain repeated/repetitive experiences in the long term. If we did, it would feel like torture.
      So, if all you did for the whole 5 months was nothing, then time will have felt like it passed by quick in your long term memory.
      When you have a different/unique experience, you will retain it and feel like that period of time had passed by fast in the short term.
      However, in the long term memory of a unique "summer" or year, you will look back at it as if it was a long summer or year.
      That's why in my case, when I was in High School, the week/school days felt so arduous and long in my short term memory.
      But when I had graduated HS, as a long term memory, I felt as if my first day of HS was only weeks or months ago.

Before this, I worked long hours, went out too much to drink and just didn’t use my days right most of the times, with the pandemic I found out I hate going out that much and I hate my job and I realize how much has passed since I was 17, the quarantine paused my life pretty much and I just looked at it for the first time after years of ignoring the fact I there is more than living the moment Just me? @Dinanysos Před 3 lety +2

      So although you'd call yourself introverted you relate to the mindset that time doesn't feel real when you're home?
      I mean I get that time feels distorted, but more on a big big monthly scale. Because I can't use my vacation days to go somewhere I have nothing to look forward to, so I just let time pass, and suddenly its autumn.
      But I still attended the same amount of parties I did the last few years. Which is like... 1-2 times per year.
      I got the feedback from most of my introverted friends as well, that the staying home and not seeing people part really isn't the issue. Time within a month is still just time. It just feels surprising when you look back after half a year, because you have no big thing of the year to look forward to/look back on.
