The RIGHT Way To Make A Farmhouse Table || With Dowels

- In this woodworking tutorial video I'm going to be showing you the RIGHT way to make a farmhouse table top with dowels and saving money on lumber by reusing most of the original wood. When building a breadboard table top the first time, I learned a lot from my mistakes so now I want to install the breadboard ends the right way. When woodworking, dowels can allow for expansion and contraction with the changes in temperature and humidity. This is the first time I'm using Odie's oil with a pigment for wood color. In the end I saved lots of money on lumber by using the reclaimed wood. Plus it was really cool to restore this beautiful table.
I'll be removing the old top and cutting it apart, cleaning up the old wood, cutting it to size, doing all the glue ups, cutting down the frame and then sanding and finishing the top.
You'll learn how to build a breadboard table top, how to properly make breadboard ends using dowels, how to build a farmhouse table and you'll learn a little about wood expansion and contraction with changes in humidity and temperature.
With this technique you don't need a Festool domino. just a simple doweling jig.

Fantastic video. That planner saves the day. Good tip on screw glue not to do lol. Full watch.
Thanks! I'm excited to have a table again that I know won't crack.
This video is JUST what I needed! I was about to make a table top with pocket-holed breadboards and was just a bit suspicious based on what I was reading. I didn't want to lose any length by cutting in mortise/tenon joints. This dowel method will be perfect. Thank you!
Perfect! The table still looks perfect a year later. Thanks for the comment.
So stupid simple but genius! The clamp extension is a game changer since I have fewer clamps and also shorter. Love it. Love watching your vids and I'm starting to miss my wood working. Struggle is with limited time since working 24/7, where to put my time? Wood working, reloading bullets, and shooting? Oh yeah and the "honey do list". 1st world problems I guess. Great job!!!
Thanks! You definitely need to prioritize!
I finally got a round to fixing my the crack in my table, the right way. The best part is that it only cost me a single white oak board! Subscribe, like and comment to help support my channel so I can keep making these videos.
Awesome work man
Thanks!
hello you did a great job congratulations👍🏻☺️
Hey, thanks!
I liked your clamp extension.
I have been using pipe clamps as you have but have purchased couplings and addition pipe to make those clamps as long as I desire. Only problem is the coupler creates space between the pipe and work piece . Little bit of shimming and it’s solved. Nice work by the way
Good idea!
What size roundover bit did you use on the edges? I love the little bit of definition it adds to the boards. I have thought about doing that myself but wasn’t sure how it would look. Now I’m for sure going to try it.
I usually use a 1/8th roundover. It's best to try it and see if you like it. Start small. Just remember, after you glue it and sand the panel, the roundover will get a little smaller.
Nice table! Crazy to see how much of a difference between our first and most recent projects right? Also, quick tip, I recently discovered that a pain scraper is a game changer when it comes to cleaning up wood.
Thanks for the tip. I've heard that but haven't tried it yet.
@@HowIDoThingsDIY worth the $5 for sure. I think I mentioned it in my 5 tools video I made a few weeks back.
I saw that as well! Great video. Lots of good tips in there! I think that was the one where you wore like 5 different shirts too, which I thought was hilarious.
@@HowIDoThingsDIY haha, yep, thats the one!
I like that one. Great subtle engineering humor.
What about locking in the dowels? Seen a lot of people drill through table with small dowels to lock it in.
I thought about that. The dowels just weren't big enough for that. If I would have done a tennon I would have for sure. So far no issues!
Nice job!! How did you get your hands clean??😅
Time... haha. I hate wearing gloves.
those dowels seem awful short for a breadboard that wide
Possibly. So far so good. Table still looks perfect. Thanks for the comment!
