My owned modules and opinions:
1. F18 Hornet - 1st owned module, and like your first real girlfriend in life, has a special place always
2. F-16 Viper - Superb. Get it.
3. Flaming Cliffs - Not a thing wrong with these aircraft. Like they stated in this video, bind all important commands to HOTAS, use keyboard for everything else. The Frogfoot that comes with DCS is part of that module and still as much fun to fly now as it was back then
4. F15E Mudhen: Good solid module with a learning curve that is not intuitive but very rewarding and high satisfaction when mission completed. Excellent graphics/sounds and will carry like 15 tons of fuel. A bomb truck'
5. F5E Tiger II - fun little fighter that is all pilot. No autopilot, no auto anything. Manual depression on crosshairs is all you got. Radar is just there for looks. You will see it with your Mk I Eyeballs before you see it on radar. Get this before you get Mirage
6. AH64D Apache - Just tell George what to shoot and he'll do it. Excellent graphics/sound. At first you'll be like a pig on roller skates. You will think the sim is broken. Stay with it, you'll be landing on a tanker in no time.
7. Huey - Get this as your first chopper. So much fun and so well made. My fave helo.
8. Gazelle - Same as Apache with learning curve, everything written in French, nimble little screamer.
9. MI-8 HIP- Big ass Russian chopper with 3 pilots. Best logistical type missions and rescuing downed pilots. Lots of weapons and lots of cargo. VRS (vertical ring state) is your biggest enemy with this bird. Takes some gettin' used to.
10. Mosquito FB - Taking off is a bit of a challenge, landing even more of challenge, beautiful graphics and sounds. Wait until you have some warbird experience before getting. More of an advanced flight model.
11. P40 Jug - Best all around warbird with minimal learning curve. Easiest to takeoff/land. Easy to fight with, 8 .50 cal machine guns will shred any target in air or ground. Make this your first WW2 plane.
I want the F-16 just because I love it, and I'm not a fan of the F-18, but people are telling me I should get the F-18. What do you think I should get? This is my first module, I'm new to DCS.
@@fusefalafel7062 Get neither one. For new players, I highly recommend the Flaming Cliffs package. They're all great planes to fly, and that will get you used to the sim and get you having fun with the minimal effort. But once you get to the point you want to continue I would get the Hornet. It's carrier based, so you get a whole other aspect of combat with carrier warfare. And it's so good. Modeled so realistic. And you can fly off land based fields just as easy.

I started with FC3 (SU33 and F15C), then got the F14/F18 pack, then the F16, the F-15E and the A10C2. My favourite is the F-16. It's capable of very different missions (6 mavericks+4 AMRAAMs, HARMs, guided bombs, anything you could want) and surprisingly easy to figure out and to learn with. Also it has among the best situational awareness because of color screens, waypoints, Sam-rings, data link, HMD). The F-18 always feels overpowered in the "noobish way" (I accidentally chose it online and immediately won dogfights against really good players despite never having used it before), but it also has the (imho) worst display UIs and menus.
The F-15E feels great but I haven't figured out how to get the situational awareness and also my unguided bombs just don't hit (that's probably a me-problem).
The A10 is great, modern, powerful and SLLLOOOOWWWWW
I loved the A10 when I got the free trial for it, but I just didn't have time to get through a full 3 hour sortie with it being so slow and loitering for so long, so I ended up buying the Harrier. Best decision I've ever made in DCS, not that the hog isn't great, but the Harrier is just ridiculously fun.
Same, I have the F16 and F15E. Most challenging thing between switching back and forth is feeling like I lose all situational awareness in the F15e compared to the 16. I'm sure that will change as the module progresses and I get better but still
F16 then FC3 for me.

The thing I love about the Viper is the bubble canopy.

Get the F18. Its the most versatile.
trial the f18 try it out it has everything the f16 has and way better air to air and data link pretty sure data link is broken for the f16
I got the f16 recently. And it does have a bit of a learning curve and button mapping as I don't have a full true hotas setup. But pretty neat all around
I'd suggest trying it on trial before buying it.
If you're more enthusiastic about the Viper than the Hornet that will help you learn it because there is quite a lot.
I find the Hornet easier but that's only because my main plane is the Harrier and the workflow is similar.
The viper will teach you how to land better than the Hornet as well.

such good timing....after 3 years of watching dcs online...ive recently bought new computer and dcs setup. been playing fc3 planes for about 1.5 months now. (i hate computers btw). So finally thingking of buying a full fi module. Thanks for all the years of info and entertainment!

@@danpurcell404 If you're on the Stand Alone (Web Version) and not Steam... Take what you think you want for a two week trial. Unfortunately you just missed out on a sale... With that being said... Try the F-15E, Apache, F-16, F-1, F-18 (maybe a few others) as they don't get a huge reduction during sales anyway, if you end up wanting to buy any of them.
EDIT: I didn't check first, so the F-1 and F-15E may not have a trial period yet.

I appreciate this!! Long time viewer, full time job and two kids under five, so a bit short on time to jump in head first and dedicate the time needed to properly set up and learn a high-fidelity aircraft right now. That being said, that FC3 might be something I can tinker around with in the meantime to get a feel for things!! I appreciate the intel. This is also just great to hear all of your opinions on all these birds as I’ve seen you all fly these and more many times over. You guys are brilliant, and Super Cap, you sir are a freaking legend!!
Simba at the end 1:08:45 for the win!!! “I’m an Airplane slut.” I feel that quote!! 😂😂 Even as a kid, with nobody really pushing me to do so, I developed an obsession with airplanes, specifically military aircraft. It honestly started with Warbirds when I was a kid, but I can honestly say Simba said it best, and I too am an Airplane slut, doesn’t matter the airframe, country of origin, or generation of tech, even back to WWI, I just plain love military aircraft!! That’s one of main reasons I love the Grim Reapers so freaking much, you lot genuinely love those aircraft, and you go out of your way to fly all of those birds for us valued viewing-ton’s (and that’s what I really am!!😂😂) That’s also why you can count on my Patreon support, even though I don’t fly currently in DCS, I haven’t been on discord in months, and I won’t stop contributing if America does poorly in a mission!! I just freaking love what you all do, and I can see your love of flight, and I appreciate you all sharing it with us all in this platform!!

Best bird. Just got JSOWs and will get AGM-130s too. And at some point the Litening pod and way down the road, the sniper. I was surprised to not hear a mention of the HRM. It is fantastic. And for me, it is perfectly workable solo. A WSO is always nice to have though (once they get the sync issues fixed anyway).
@@cmdrbigity6914 How is the SA currently with the Mud hen? Trying to see how much of a disadvantage it is (but having the best radar could offset that as well), compared to others with datalink, JHMCS etc.

I started out with the FA-18c and really liked it but about a month back I took up the F-16 and totally just can't get enough of it. I actually thought the F-16 was made to be unstable, the reason being that's what gives it the ability to fly the way it does. The F-14 can do some crazy stuff but it feels like it's falling apart all the time.
I also started out with the fa18. I was actually deciding between the f16 and f14 but i saw a CZcams video where the cockpit is just rattling like crazy and i was sold. Its personally what i love about the f14. Every time I put any pressure on the aircraft I imagine all the screws flying off. 😂
Many jet fighters are designed to be unstable, the F-16 is far from being the only one. However we need to differentiate between an unstable design and instability during controlled flight. The fly-by-wire systems are there to get that inherent instability under control. Your inputs tell the aircraft what you want to do, the computers ensure you get there without crashing. You are not really flying the jet, the computers do.
And that is where the DCS F-16 seems to have some deficiencies. If you deploy heavy weapons from just one wing and get into an asynchron load out the DCS F-16 reacts to it rather noticeable and it gets out of balance fast. Another symptom is the unstable hands off stick characteristic. If you go level flight and take the hands off your stick you will find it veers off course rather fast.
Now the Grim Reaper guys here make the argument that it probably shouldn't do all that because the flight computers should correct this behavior. Maybe... maybe not, idk I'm no real pilot and never flown a real F-16...

I would highly recommend getting the FC3 first, followed by the fa18c for first full fidelity, in my opinion it is the easiest to learn, its modern so you don’t have to trim, and it can do literally everything in the game

Re F-14 probably my 3rd or 4th flight I was flying the canyon time trial staying as close to the water as possible, and at one point I look down and I see that I hit 12g during one of the turns
Just subscribed today. Came back to DCS after a 7 year break, ( spent that past time in FSX and over the past 4 years in MSFS 2020, amazing how much has changed over the years. ) just started 4 weeks ago in DCS. Huge learning curve !! phew !!. I feel like a complete noob !, the first time I flew, or trying to remember all those buttons to press. (unlike flying an airliner in MSFS, no MFC to program your flight, sat in my cosy first officer chair so to speak! ). My first module is the F/A 18c. Very nice to fly, good systems and a good all rounder as explained here. My next module ?, probably the F-16 Viper, more challenging. Nice bubble canopy, excellent if you have Track-IR or the Tobii. Yes its a nice return to DCS, my time in FSX and now MSFS 2020 helps with the flying etc. But DCS is a whole new ball game. It will take a lot of learning. Thats the fun !!. Thank you for this very informative video, and appreciated the input from your other DCS pilots in this synopsis of the DCS modules. Thank you.
For Flaming Cliffs 3. There's a mod you can get called CLICKABLE-FC3 makes the cockpits mostly clickable.

M2000 is for me the best non ED module with closest to reality behaviour, and ideal for beginners having few time to learn a machine, then for helos Apache becomes more and more interesting with FCR arrival, I love A10CII that is the sole module in stable version and a wonderful platform for CAS. Not easy to learn but so well adapted to warthog HOTAS…..F-18 brings with supercarrier a new level in CVN use.
Its a great time to get into DCS or when it comes buying a module.
My own favourites that I own in order, F15E, Apache, F16 Viper, Mil-24 Hind, F/A-18 Hornet ( most complete alrround module), UH-1D Huey, Mosquito, Spitfire; P47 Thunderbolt, BF109 and P51 (WWII all pretty even).
The F14 looks great but needs a high spec GPU PC to fly, so I had it for a while, but I'm only able to fly it recently and still learning it.
Then close to make the list, Updated Gazelle, AV8B Harrrier (VTOL is cool) , Mil-8 helicopter and the JF-17 (Jeff) is really fun to fly and use.

If you love the Spitfire you'll love the Gazelle. Very different mindset to the other DCS helicopters. Mistral (when not nerfed by ED who don't understand it) is easily the best IR missile in DCS.
Thanks Cap (& boys!) - These videos are helpful, even in limited scope. I'm just getting into DCS, and with all of the module options available it's a bit daunting. A follow-up on the terrain / map modules would be helpful, at least from a "ones you just need" perspective (like super carrier)
It wouldn't necessarily warrant a video response, but what are your thoughts on the campaign modules? Some of them got good reviews, but most have terrible reviews. I'm one of those people who opts to play single player first, learn the game and mechanics before jumping into multiplayer, and I'm wondering which, if any, are worth it.
funny to watch this after having all the modules myself, surely made me want to explore more of the f-18, im a tom cat, Eagle and viper guy, i just cant get enough of these amazing 3 planes, love the mirage and A10CII i know these planes after 1900h of DCS you get the fell, now im committed to learn in detail the F15E is such a Cadillac of the sky, interestingly the mig29 is very fun to fly, i dont like the other Russian planes, i even tried the black cockpit mod but isnt really my thing Russian Jets USA all the way, love your channel Reapers much love from Lisbon-Portugal and happy Christmas, with Jesus and love in your Hearts❤❤✝✝ just bought the Hooded Jacket to help the channel and i choose it because besides looking good was the more expensive, you deserve it after so many guides i watched for free, tx brother

Would suggest you to learn them or focus on one and then in the next sale buy the f18 or the hog.
I think this video deserved to be a two or three-part video and not a rushed one-part. Yeah, it's a lot to cover, but why is there a hurry? Everyone has limited time in the day, I get it, so maybe end the get-together after an hour and regroup later to finish? I learned a lot from everyone's input. And while I know Cap is used to being the voice of the Grim Reapers, I would try to respectfully suggest that, when it comes to modules he has little experience with or doesn't care about, he let those with him who might know more do most of the talking in regards to said modules.
For example, the JF-17 was very close to, once again, being labeled something akin to a Discount F-16 (paraphrasing) and brushed under the rug. And yeah, it can't match the F-16 in kinematic performance, so it isn't as good in BVR or Dogfighting (perhaps), but it has A LOT more ground-attack weapons than the F-16 has. Anti-ship missiles, cruise missiles, more JSOW choices (including one with sensor-fused bomblets), laser-guided rockets, and an anti-runway bomb. Also, the JF-17 module is fantastically made and simulated.

I can tell you this. I started with FC3 before you suggested the f16. Had I just went day one on the f16, I doubt id still be going. - Sabrelynx
I will say there are videos on the internet that show the making of the Viper and state the Viper was never meant to be stable. The very first flight, the test pilot almost crashed because of it. He said I let the stick go and then i was ok.
No, the F-16 is stable. No one is going to want to fly an unstable plane in combat. It’s just that it is stabilised by the computer, not naturally stable. It’s been designed to be aerodynamically unstable and made stable by the computer so it can be flown.

Probably will only come in a mod. The game is pretty exclusively stuck in pre 2000's tech.

Was it worth it? Im looking to get my next aircraft soon... i got the f16 and fc3 and i dont know if i should get the f14 or the f18... i really want the f18 because it's so good but i did many free trials on it so it won't be something new for me which is also what i want...

the F-16 is OK but the outside modelling is WAY OFF (the nose section of the aircraft looks like SHAIT) just a heads-up! externally -> the F-16 looks nothing like that

bought it yesterday.. I own the f18.. amazing and I played it without my HOTAS being bound yet so a lot of stuff didnt work. It was wild. spent 15 minutes flying around with a low flying C17 I intercepted.

Re manual, the baseline should be the old Falcon 4.0 manual
For the Warbirds I have to say that as much as it lacks the modelling of a click pit and the different smaller tidbits, IL2 does a far better job with the feel of flight for these and the damage model, which is for the guns/cannons is superior. As for jets, DCS has no competitor as far as I know :D

I always tell ppl to get the A10 as their first full fidelity. Mainly because there are lots of great vids and campaigns to really help you learn that thing. Not to mention it’s a finished module.
From there it doesn’t really matter.
Also really seals the deal when I let them borrow my TM Warthog that I barely use anymore. Mainly bc it auto maps all the controls.
My fav will always be the Viper. Old school BMS player so the F16 will always be at the top of my list.
I like the Saab Viggen the most.

Very nice and actually informative video, especially with the different pov's. Only thing that could make it more enjoyable is slightly more editing to show maybe 2 or 3 photos and short videos of the things that are being talked about to be able to quickly reference. Great video nonetheless

I said screw it, first week of ever playing this, no experience and went straight for the F-15E as my first module, very challenging to learn for sure, but I'm a little like you in the way of I like a challenge! :D F-15E now holds a special place
supercarrier to me is basically "without this carriers are just so bad you need to buy it" It's unfortunate that this happened. Kind of like combined arms -- that should just be part of the game. I'd absolutely pay $25 to not have to deal with the non-supercarrier carriers.
The F-18 was my first full fidelity jet but I trialed the F-16 and it was just immensely better. Faster and more capable in the air. I think the F-16 is the best jet for me. It’s simple enough yet sophisticated enough to never get boring.
Despite having a fetish for Viper since the 90s (Falcon 4.0 / BMS freak here) and love dogfigths with it in DCS, I find it interesting how often I am jumping into FC3 planes in multiplayer and having genuine fun. Especially with VR as the simplified, yet still realistic avionics, can be all mapped to HOTAS pretty much completelly to not break immersion looking for keyboard.
So you want to know which is the best module? Ask yourself a question, which module would be the biggest loss to the DCS landscape if you remove it. And for 99% of people/servers it will be FC3. Great value, lot of campaigns. Honestly I find it a loss that ED dropped the idea of another lite-sim spin off they were pitching a few years back.
Screw hardcore sim argument, we are missing a balanced ~90% realistic red vs blue multiplayer flight sim game folks, and we had that back in 2011-2016 DCS era. Which I think is a loss as the market has a gap between the arcades like WarThunder and DCS today that is not filled. Or you have to revert down to cold war era like Enigma's cold war server.
Can someone tell me what i the MOST complete module thats still in early access?

My two cents:
I primarily fly the F-15E, I wasn't a super hyped fanboy, just curious and was out of DCS for a while so I wanted to try it. It's my favorite, by far. For me, the UI just makes sense in a weird way. JDAMs, SUPER easy to program. Compared the the F/A-18 especially I believe it's much better. Instead of clicking a bunch of different buttons to do a ripple, you can preprogram all of your bombs much easier, just SP designate or TGP designate to the bomb, no mark points needed, and once you're in the actual engagement area there's no fiddling with buttons, just pickle. HOTAS imo is much better with the F-15, especially due to the auto aquisition / castle switch / coolie switch format. The hornet with just the sensor switch is a bit fiddly (go up, then right, then left), instead of Castle switch picks my MFD, auto acq. does most features of that MFD and coolie picks up anything missed (really only cycling waypoints which is so much better in the F-15.)
Aside from the 15 vs. 18, A-10 is straight HOTAS, thats the usee experience, EVERYTHING is HOTAS and it's great.

How the heck do you go through a DCS world module list and not do the A10C?!
It's the most polished and refined module in DCS. Easy to fly for people starting out. Lots of systems to learn and the highest fidelity. Also, in helmet hud with the A10c II. It's a great tank killer that can work well with Apaches and has a long loiter time.
I have FC3 but haven't really touched it yet, but I got the trial for the A10c2 as my first full fidelity and was able to learn it in that time.... very fun module for ground pounding.

@grimreapers This would probably be a really good idea for a next video for all of the different campaign maps.
Terrains would be welcome, sure. I know that you are heavily biased towards multiplayer but I wouldn't mind hearing recommendations of available campaigns from the guys that have experience with them. The biggest drawback with DCS compared to other combat flight games is the lack of core game missions and campaigns leaving the user feeling like they have to create their own which can be daunting for people with little mission editor experience. I know that there will be extremely talented mission makers out there with products in the DCS store and I would certainly value some guidance in tracking down high quality and fulfilling experiences.

THe most annoying part of the f16 for me is the enforced boresighting of the mavs.. on a mp server where you may have to cold start multiple times it gets annoying

@grimreapers I've actually mentioned it several times to big newy and he said there is an active ticket open about it. For me it's an accessibility issues as I have trouble seeing the tpod due to bad eyesight. I think if more people expressed a desire to have this changed (I've asked for a hot started jet to have this aligned) then it might get looked at.
Having a menu option to have cold started jets having the mavs boresighted would be really helpful. I just find it such a pain I resign myself to using mavs in vidual mode which makes them much less versatile.

me started FC3, then eventually buying almost all of the modules. except for ww2 planes.
I went with the F-15E first. And got the F-18 afterwards.
I, personally, prefer the F15E. Love that thing.
Competitors at Shadow's Trophy agree pretty universally that the Gazelle's flight model is broken. Absolute UFO. It's the only rotary that can outflank the Black Shark and that simply shouldn't be possible.
as long aS it hasnt Stuka's it's it's still IL2 unbeaten in everything WWii, DCS is for jets
Especially the flight model on IL2 aircrafts.
In the DCS world, the models don’t have a consistency concerning the flight models since they are from different developers.
Still trying to figure out what to get after FC3 and F5, Mig21 has worst cockpit ever, and Mirage 2000 is not in last 2 sales.
My first was AJS-37 Viggen and later F-14. Not bad choices. Love them both alot but somehow still go back to the F-14. Something about the overall polish and great feeling with joystick.
I'll sing the praises of the Black Shark all day. It will outrun and outflank an Apache without contest, and I challenge any Apache pilot to take it on in a 1v1 engagement.
Man, I know that it would be a problem to do it, but it'd be great to have some indication of who is talking. I only know captains voice. xD Other than that I really like this, a lot of distinct sincere opinions.
