  • The CNB presents an art documentary titled “The Czech heavyweight coin” depicting the production of the second-largest gold coin in the world. In 2019 we are commemorating the 100th anniversary of the creation of the Czechoslovak koruna. The CNB has had a gold coin with a nominal value of CZK 100 million made specially for this occasion. The coin, which has become the symbol of the celebrations, can be seen at the exhibition “100 years of the koruna” in the Imperial Stables at Prague Castle until 28 April. The Czech Mint, together with its subcontractors from other countries, won the tender to mint the coin. A semi-finished version was produced by casting from almost pure gold (999.9) at Swiss company Metalor, which specialises in processing precious metals. This version was slightly larger in diameter than the milled coin and double the weight (260 kg). The semi-finished version was then transported to the Vienna Mint, where the coin was milled to create a relief designed by the sculptor and medallist Vladimír Oppl. On the obverse side, the author emphasised the birth of the Czechoslovak currency with a stamp dating from 1919, and the present is represented by the CNB logo. The reverse side of the design is dominated by a monumental Czech lion and the motif of the best-known Czechoslovak one-koruna coin dating from 1922. The coin was polished into its final form by the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou. You can follow the detailed process of production of this globally unique coin in an almost ten-minute long documentary directed by Tomáš Vrána.
