- I have always wondered what R2D2 was saying. You can usually get the gist of it by whatever Luke or Threepio says to him in response, but we can't be sure, and sometimes, well, shit, he could be saying a lot of stuff.
So I made this. Hope you like it. Took me hours.

I like the video, but by translating the Aurebesh text seen at 5:14, R2's exact wording is: "Anakin, turn the ship around and go back home right away!"

It's part of the programming present in all R2 units, though R2D2 developed more over time from his experiences, but still they have a strong sense of loyalty and a cheerful personality which is why they were more popular than newer units like R3 R4 R6 etc.

The thing with him, is that he is EVERYWHERE in the film, and makes it annoying. He can be funny sometimes but there's just too much Jar Jar.

He originally had more importance in other films than just being comedy relief.
Lucas wanted him to be like Yoda, not a Force user, but how he initially appears silly but is actually smart. However, the fan reaction nerfed him down to just a small character

@@ISCARIOTSHIELD He was supposed the be Evil crazy Yoda. But unlike ESB, they didn't reveal Jar Jar to be Darth Pelagus in the same movie they introduced him in so he came off as a goof. Lucas got too scared AotC would flop without the Sith payoff and that was sooner than they had planned so they made Darth Plagueis an off screen character and gave Darth Sidious a throwaway line about how he killed him so nobody would ask questions. This forced Jar Jar to really be a goof so we ended up with the mess we got though TCW played around with the undercover Sith angle for fun.

These videos are funny. When I was a kid I would do something similar when I was watching movies making up dialogue for the characters who didn't talk or their made up languages weren't translated.

What people don't realize about R2 units is within the Expanded universe they had to have a routine maintenance about once every few months because for some reason their programming makes them a little more ornery than usual, some don't let them go through this routine because it gives them the bravado and edge they need to get the job done. R2-D2 was one of those lucky one's, explains why he had some shit-hot stunts.
