Back when I first started playing, I would always worry about fret buzz. No one ever told me new strings are gonna be buzzy no matter what. I dig what this guy is saying though...if you're playing a $4000 acoustic and recording it, ok, fret buzz can be a big issue. If you're plugging into a 100w Marshall with your gain medium to high, you're not gonna hear it. I love the room mic to recording back and forth you did.
2:42 "You gotta make some compromises between playability and super high action" I think that super simple sentence just brought my mind at ease over fret buzz, after spending years super frustrated with it. I never really thought about it that way. From now on, when I hear light fret buzz, I'm going to think to myself "it's buzzing a bit because I've made it easy snd comfortable to play". Thank you so much. You're right. At the end of the day, all that matter is whether or not the buzzing is being picked up by the amp.
Glad you're making this point. I have many people who say I want my action as low as it will go without buzzing. Drives me crazy lol. I have the action on my S-500 set very low and with considerable buzzing when not amplified. Plays like a dream!
Just started playing with an electric guitar coming from acoustic and hearing some fret buzz on my electric have always made me dissappointed of my electric set up so I always adjust the truss rod and bridge height whenever I hear a tiny bit of buzz. Good to know that it doesn't go through the amp.
I'm a beginner on bass so I know nothing, but I have been practicing often without plugging in with the hope of building better technique/accuracy on the fretboard (so my suckiness is easier for me to hear). It might make sense to balance plugging in vs not plugging in, though, so I'm not stressing myself about it more than needed
Sir, I have been playing bass for 20 years and the simple information in this video has completely changed my thought process about low action and playability. I use to stress out about getting super low action with absolutely no fret buzz. I guess with some bass guitars it is possible but for the most part, it is a complete headache trying to achieve that milestone on the average bass. What you say makes sense. If the buzz is not coming through the amp, why should it matter if you can hear the buzz unplugged? The only caveat is that I don't want to set my action so low to the point of choking the string and the sound. I.E. 3:13
A bass set up for low action and a light touch almost always skirts the edges of fret buzz. As the great John Entwhistle said, "I want it to buzz evenly all the way down the neck".
I cannot thank you enough! Been playing for 18 months. As I got better, playing more fretting intensive passages, I hurt myself (ulnar nerve, numb pinky). Playing mostly at home, unplugged. Had a way too high action to get a clean "acoustic" sound. And also played way too hard in order to hear myself. No more unplugged!! Good headphones via IK Amplitube. Was always wondering why Billy Sheehan, JPJ and others sounded so clanky in unplugged interiews. Thank you again!
@@296801 I am sorry to read that. Sadly my pinky never got better. Piano was also impacted to a degree. Have been playing harmonica for over a year now and loving it. Hopefully you will find something yoj love and can play. 🙏
Man you saved me! I own 2 8 string guitar i heard that sound in open string but in amp and a mid gain i cant heard hahaha 💙💙💙 ive been looking an answer for this for so long I already subcribe and looking forward!
I just started building guitars and I finished my first Bass and I'm having fret buzz issues then I am not sure which angle to tackle. But I'm trying everything
Ok, would say I like very low strings height and some buzz on my basses...except when the buzz turns on a clicking, almost like slaping, when I play more aggressive metal music, and that happens if you put the new strings in a bad way, like I did last week🤷♂️🤦♂️😡👍
thank you so much, the fret buzz was driving me insane because i'd never hear it in any videos, so i thought something was wrong. I guess i just have to turn up my headphone volume so I wont hear it
It's a physics problem. Set the instrument up correctly and don't make people listen to fret buzz. OK- I have ASD, so flickering light bulbs and buzzing circuits, strings, pump noise harmonics, etc. make me ill. But I have to assume no one wants to hear road noise from a tire with flapping tread. same thing with fret buzz. It can be fixed on the majority of guitars. If it can't (short of planing a fretboard) then scrap the instrument.
Ive thought that for years, worrying to much about a little fret buzz can ruin an otherwise creative player.

The sound of the strings pulling through the bridge made my cat attack my phone!!

same for me!
This is a great video. The bottom line: an electric guitar (bass too) is just that - an electric instrument. It's meant to sound good *electrified*.
This is the best video Ive watched before the year ends!
Yea, come home grab the bass blast and it sounds like garbage can backup, ready to launch it, but I listened to your wisdom, thank you!
Agreed. I only get a fret buzz on my A string third fret. Plugged my guitar to my amo and bam! No buzz at all 😂😂😂

I needed this video so bad

homerinchinatown2 don’t worry about the buzz unless you hear through the amp or recorded.

I never worry about buzz. You can only do it so good. Honestly I kinda like a little buzz because it gives it more static in my opinion
That New Years Day riff sounds sooooo good!
Zachary Drummond Thanks!

Yep you can’t hear it when you plug it in.

I never thought about fret buzz that way, thanks.
Thank you! I'm new on electric guitar and I had no idea this was normal, I was paranoid even after fixing the action.
Me too lmao.
Make sure you setup your truss rod proper first. Then do your action.
Hey dude excellent video on fret buzz! Thanks for sharing!

Can you please tell us how much relief you have used on that bass??
👍🏻
Honestly I hear a bit of fret buzz during the whole sample
Helped a lot thx
I wish I watched this video before messing with my threshrod.
Never stop learning.
Are you actually measuring action with the bass on the neck rest? Or just for the video?
I learned something new today I love this guy 😁
Thank you so much...

some buzz i can handle where its very mild, but if its fretting out or dear god sounds like the guitar farting with every fret, i go nuts!
so the amp basically doesnt pick up any buzz?
🙌🙌🙌
I subbed today
