    I mean, wapol's drive is pretty simple. He's a vain proto-'celestial dragon'.
He didnt go after Hiriluk for any practical reason. Its just that he said "no doctors" and here was a guy saying "I'm a doctor". Thats really all there was to the 'plan'.

7:08 it's actually a very good reasoning. It would be a smart idea to leave Hiluluk alone, in any other political system. But Wapol is a king in an absolute monarchy, letting anyone ignore the ban will diminish his power, since rule of the monarch is highly dependent on total obedience. In addition, a lot of monarchs in real world have made similar choices.

Walpol attacking Hirluk makes a lot of sense. Walpol doesn’t give a shit that people hate Hirluk. He wants complete power via monopolizing medical care. Oda is showing the self-defeating nature of being power-hungry. He would be better served to let Hirluk go, but he can’t give up that control. And his incompetence underscores this. He’s like a CD w/o admiral protection. An entitled brat who’s good at being evil, but not super good at being scary.

One thing I think might have influenced Wapol’s decision regarding the doctors was Vegapunk. Vegapunk was 500 years ahead of the rest of the world and is enough of a humanitarian to give his research(after it’s been paid for) to the world for free, something that could have threatened the drum island’s tribute to the celestial dragons which probably consisted of doctors and medical research or the money such things bring. Wapol couldn’t oppose the government or the dragons, but he could bleed his people by controlling the doctors. As for hiriluk, he was calling himself a doctor and could’ve destroyed Drum’s reputation through his quack practises.

Wapol's backstory makes perfect sense to me. He's a violent narcissist. Dr. Hiriluk's crime wasn't that he was practicing medicine, but rather that he was taking the attention away from Wapol. He was also working outside the system Wapol created, which meant Wapol couldn't take credit for it.
You even see shades of this narcissism when Wapol abandons his doctors to die. In his mind, those doctors aren't even people, just things of which he can get more. Why should he care what happens to them?

Wario starts out as an evil, greedy glutton antagonist. After some defeats, he eventally manages to found a very prosperous and profitable videogame company. He also has a canonically translucent mustache twirling evil brother who despite barely being seen anywhere, people seem to recognize him more than Wario himself.
I wonder now if Wario will at some point find out by pure chance that Peach is actually a world-ending threat kind of villain that has been pulling the strings all along.

  • @GBftw
    @GBftw Pƙed 22 dny +2

You missed the point of Drum Island. The main threat is Nami’s Illness, not Wapol. He is greed personified and despite being weak himself, uses the tools of government to exert power, by controlling the doctors, similarly to Stalin. It is one of my favourite arks, and that is helped by there never being a pretence that Luffy would not be able to punch him hard enough. Dictatorships control key things like healthcare, education and Money to keep power and prevent rebellion. He shows how important ruler is, independent of their individual ability to win a fight in a series where that is usually the defining ability.

    - Wapol was the first King we came to know
    - first mention of Blackbeard and his group
    - Luffy says there are people in the world that don't sleep (Blackbeard Characteristic we lerned 800 Episodes later)
    - we lerned about Zoan Devil Fruits and they're limitations
    - the giant Mountain with the Castle at the top mimicing Mariejois
    - a kingless Castle where Kureha took resident, forshadowing Imu
    - the 20 Doctor's as a stand in for the 20 King's
    - a first look into the World Goverment and the Reverie
    - Gold Roger actualy being Gol D Roger
    - the first mention of the Will of D
    - first mention of Ace and his hunt for Blackbeard
    - we got a new Crewmate in Chopper and lerned his backstory
This Arc was all about world building. And Wapol was just a means for that.
If anything his whole character is a 1 to 1 blueprint of what the Celastial Dragons are.

I think Wapol fails most as a villain because he never once comes off as a threat in Drum Island. He’s bumbling, goofy, idiotic, and generally harmless. He sets a couple houses on fire, but then mostly concerns himself with kicking Kureha out of the castle, which he entirely fails to do. He only has two crew members, who were utterly weak and soloed by freaking Chopper. The only reason there was any tension at all is because the entire crew except Luffy were either sick or lost for the entire arc.

He’s like a gag antagonist placed in a serious arc and I appreciate that he’s underwhelming because he highlights other antagonists by comparison such as black beard. 7:44 I see it as the law is the law and defying wapol at all is punishable.

Regarding your two options stated in the video, well there is some logic to them. The true reason he wanted Chopper's mentor was because he wasn't happy knowing that even the smallest of medical help was available to his subjects. He had to control them all Even if it was a bad doctor.

Yay! I love love LOVE king Wapol, his introduction being him out-weirding the strawhats by eating their ship and other things. Coming back to his kingdom finally and just wrecking everything and everyone, at times i was captived by his elegant way of speaking (tho i guess that depends on the translation huh) as im reminded "oh this is really a king". I do find his relation to Dalton quite interesting, he's very trigger happy with those who oppose him, yet he locked Dalton in a cell for a while demanding an apology in an mocking tone. Maybe its because as a vassal he hadent lost his value yet or the people of drum island adored him so much but any sense of "mercy" from a character whos so sadistically cruel toward everyone always catches my eye. And his fights were he just threatens to eat people alive is just so unhinged hes just so crazy i love him, even ate himself alive good lawdy

Walpol was the prototype for all of those arcs we got after that where the Strawhats had to over throw some kind of evil dictator. He was fine for that time, because the formula wasn’t already over used by that time. Walpol was easily hateable and he had a freaky power and that was all he needed to be for the simpler arcs of that time. He wasn’t too boring because of his design and power but he also didn’t distract us from the epic background story of chopper and Luffy trying to find a doctor for Nami.
In my opinion he was perfect for that arc and making him a gag character after that is honestly the best you could do with him.

A theory I had back during MHA's run that was "the quirk influences the behaviour/habits of the person." Mainly looking at Toga's and Stain's quirks. I wonder if it's true in One Piece as well. We know some devil fruits have a will. I wonder if Wapol was a fine person at one point, then ate the fruit that is pretty much the embodiment of gluttony. This could have either altered his brain chemistry to always want to eat and thus made him impulsively greedy.

I know this sounds crazy but since one piece arcs mirror themselves to future arcs, Walpol is going to be a near copy of Joyboy. A king/prince then pirate and wanting to be king again? That could be a close facsimile to Joyboy, we know Joyboy was from the ancient kingdom, don’t know whose it’s king was or royal family (maybe his lineage),become the first pirate and had a dream to become king
.again? There are more parallels like knowing the truth on who runs the world/seeing the empty throne filled

So after the last couple of chapters I think it’s safe to say Joyboys haki is so strong he’s basically immune to devil fruits including Imu which I think is why he was so scared when he felt it. He thought the only person to nullify his powers had returned. Also I don’t know who that hat belongs to but maybe the giant straw hat is another item imbued with joyboys haki. Which is why I’d bring locked away in cold storage. This is my crazy part of the theory, I don’t think he does have a peg leg but if he does what if traded his leg for knowledge or power similar to odens eye. That could be why he’s leagues above anyone we’ve seen in the series to date.

Thus is the first dictator like villain we have encountered in the series and kind serves as a soft side celestial in my eyes.

What if Buggy's awakening is allowing him to attach his body parts to other people and let them controll his body parts - thereby giving Shanks the possibility to fight with two arms in the final fight?

  • @SilvrSavior

Thinking about Wapol and his place in the story, he's kinds like the at home version of Moria. His crew is way dangerous than him and he relies entirely on his devil fruit to carry him.
Wapol also demonstrates the fact that authority alone will not have Luffy bend his or stop. It is kinda like a break villain before the intensity that Crocodile brings in the next arc.
That's also why I think Wapol would be a great villain for the next season of One Piece. Just so long as they use the marines to set up Crocodile. Treat him kinda like a boogey man and maybe not have Vivi know who he is but just some very vague facts and something damning that makes them chase after the crew.
