    Lyrics:
    The beautiful lull
    The dangerous tug
    We get to feel small
    From high up above
    And after a glimpse
    Over the top
    The rest of the world
    Becomes a gift shop
    The pendulum swings
For the horse like a man
    Out over the rim
    Is ice cream to him
    The beautiful lull
    The dangerous tug
    We get to feel small
But not out of place at all
    We're forced to bed
    But we're free to dream
    All us humans extras
    All us hearded beings
    And after a glimpse
    Over the top
    The rest of the world
    Becomes a gift shop
I don't know what to believe
    Sometimes I even forget
    And if it's a lie
    Terrorists made me say it
    The beautiful lull
    The dangerous tug
    We get to feel small
    From high up above
    From high up above
    From high up above
    From high up above
    From high up above

I live in the states and first heard the hip when I was 29 years old-boy was I missing out. I know it's cliche to talk about how big this band should have been here in the states but honestly-it is our loss and Canada's gain-perfect synergy of flawless musicianship, transendent lyrics, and one of the best lead singers to ever do it-RIP Gord

Yep, as a fellow American I share your sentiment. The Hip should have been bigger 'south of the border.' I was fortunate to grow up in Albany, NY where they actually played Tragically Hip songs like "At the Hundredth Meridian" on the radio, but every time I've seen The Hip in the States the majority of attendees are Candian expats. They were such a killer band that deserved to be bigger outside of Canada.

I’ve been a Hip fan since the late 80s. As a Canadian, I compare their gift to us as Pearl Jam is a gift to you South of the border.
Both bands have(had:RIP Gord) amazing leads, are wonderful humanitarians and love their fans.

As an American who discovered The Hip after Gord's passing, they are by far the most underrated, under-appreciated and little known band of all time. Canadian bands always get short shrift, from Rush to BTO to the Guess Who, but the obscurity of The Hip is hard to comprehend.

The HIP were a Super-Sonic Stealth Fighter Jet. They flew under the mainstream radar at the speed of sound and light. For 30 years, they soared within my heart, and still do. A perfect band based upon extraordinary friendship, long term commitment to artistic craft, and electrifying musicianship, if there ever was one.

The first time I heard this was 1996. I drove to San Diego. My first time there. It was foggy with a Marine layer fog that washed over the freeway like waves. Speeding along with the ocean on the one side and these beautiful rolling hills on the other. I felt like it was the most perfect and beautiful song in that moment. I got teared up as I heard it because the beauty I saw matched what he was singing. "After a glimpse, over the top, the rest of the world becomes a Gift Shop". I did feel small in the presence of such beauty...but not out of place at all. Rest in Peace, man.

I was very very fortunate to see them when they came to Nashville in support of this album. Packed wall to wall with Canadians, it was a great feeling to be amongst fellow Hip fans, even if I wasn't Canadian. Such a tremendous show they put on. And the thing was they sounded SO good in this tiny hole in the wall venue. They put on a show like they were playing for tens of thousands of people.
Sadly that was the last time I saw them .
But I got to see them. :)

Let you in on a little secret Sam, any HIP fan (regardless of nationality) who has either bought an album, or has been to a HIP show, is always considered to be an honorary Canadian, by way of all Canadian HIP fans. Another little secret is that Gord included American/Global references within his lyrics just as much, if not more than he did with Canadian references. Listen to the HIP's catalog and you might be surprised at how well Gord stitched the entire universe together with his poetic lyrics.

Their best song in my opinion…and one of the best musings of human existence I’ve ever heard. It’s takes the angst, dread and ennui out of what would be a meaningless existence and gives it the power of joy it deserves. Yeah, we may be small and insignificant on the cosmic scale, but at the same time, you can feel at one with the sheer greatness of it all.
I may be wrong, but that’s what this song means to me.

Was lucky enough to see one of their last shows in the Canadian tour, and am still discovering their music. Surprising how few people in the states are into them. The guitar work is brilliant and Gord's voice and writing blows me away. He is a unique dude. The Canadians in Winnipeg were quite moved by the show

Some American radio stations play their music, mostly stations near the border. I never understood why the Hip didn't become bigger in the States.

    • @davemorrison312
      @davemorrison312 Před 6 lety

Stephen Wells same reason Los Tigers Del Norte didn’t make it in many American markets. Think of the Hip as indigenous

    • @stephenwells6434
      @stephenwells6434 Před 6 lety

That's not actually a very good analogy. Los Tigres Del Norte plays music heavily influenced by traditional Mexican music, essentially a folk group, and they sing in a language the majority of Americans don't understand. The Tragically Hip were a band playing a contemporary style of music that was popular in the US at the time.
And for the record, you don't actually need to be familiar with Canadian culture to understand most of their music. It just helps in some cases. I mean, this particular song, Gift Shop, is about the Grand Canyon and has nothing to do with Canada. Courage (reference to a Canadian author aside) talks of human suffering that could apply to anyone. New Orleans Is Sinking is about a tourist in New Orleans, and Bobcaygeon is about neo-Nazis and a small town that even most Canadians have probably never heard of. (Heck, Gord Downie only chose it because he needed a rhyme.)

    • @davemorrison312
      @davemorrison312 Před 6 lety

Stephen Wells if by majority, you mean the 49% of Hispanic Americans who outnumber Anglos, then yes. You are talking about a majority.
Also, not every American would understand Canadian references either.

    • @davemorrison312

The first time I listened to this song ! I was going through a very bad time in my life , Over worked ,stressed out ,bad marriage, aging parents , the death of my brother in law . From getting his head Crushed in a plastic injection molding machine . Trying to be Mr Everything to Everyone ! Working nights . Farming during the day , Had very bad drinking problem . And a habit to fix . And I lost it, there was nothing left in anymore . I drove to the middle of nowhere by a lake with everything I needed to make it all go away . I sat there crying my eyes out watching a stop watch that I had hanging from my rearview . I was listening to the Doors, This is the End ! When some guy in a VW bug pulled in the Hugh parking lot . And just had to pull up right next to Me ! I just sat there what seamed like hours. It was a very hot day and my windows were down . As was his , He kept trying to get my attention . Just looking at me ! The guy must of saw that I had been crying my eyes out and drinking and could hear my tunes . I just sat looking at the lake . The guy got out if his car and walked around to the passenger side and opens his door , Takes a Hugh pair of speakers from the back seat. Puts them on the roof of his bug . He walks over to me and looks inside my truck as he is leaning on my door ! He says Hey Man ! You like Tunes A ? You need Help A ? You don't look so good A !! And tells me You just need to get Hip Man That's All A !! Goes back to his Vw and puts in a tape Of the Tragically Hip. And cranks it up . I'm sitting there looking at his Bug ! It has Canadian Stickers all over the car ! A plate from Ontario on it . And one sticker on the back side window that said in big letters !! HEY MAN DON'T BUG ME ?? I'M HIP MAN !!! He put this song on and walked back to my door and said Hey Man you really need to talk about what I see your thinking about ! Let's go sit at the table and Rap about it A and listen to the tunes cause Gord can help you ! I'm thinking Who the Fuck is Gord ? We talked for hours . And he went through a stack of tapes ! He kind of looked like a tall version of Napoleon Dynamite . Hair , Glasses and all ! I had no clue who he was and I just spilled my story out to him. And I felt so good telling someone I didn't know or would never see again in my life what was going on. He went to his car and came back with a few tapes he had made of the Hip , And told me Hey Man Gord and God can help you get past it . It was so strange. He said he was going to school to be a Preacher ! And was on vacation in the Middle of Nowhere Wisconsin ! And shows up on that day. At the time that I'm about to End it All ?? Just way to Odd. I still have the tapes . I wish I would of got info to keep in touch with him because he changed ! And Saved my Life ! Roger the farmer from Northwestern Wisconsin !

I saw these guys almost randomly in Baltimore in 1990 give or take a year or two. Initially I was mildly amused, but then realized I was digging it. A lot.
Then stupidity set in. Forgot about them. Did not pay attention. But re.embered that show well.
Sometime in the early aughts, after recounting the me.ory to my wife, she shortly afterward bought me Yer Favorites and I was surprised but then so happy she did that. How much had I missed? So. Damn. Much.
