Saw the Heads in 78' just before the black album came out. Couldn't believe it! It was just like this...the complete opposite of 'Classic Rock' with the long hair, dry ice machines, million dollar laser light show...CR: YES, ELO, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Bread, Fleetwood Mac, Boston, Genesis etc. Classic Rock is bands strictly from the 70's mostly. The Beatles, Stone's, the Allman Brothers, the WHO, the Byrds, the Kinks etc. etc. were 60's bands NOT 70's though like the Stones, Fleetwood Mac, they may have carried over into the 70's. I consider the end of the original 60's rock music to have happened in 71' when Dwayne Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident. Classic Rock is full of pretension...things like the magician costumes, the million dollar, smoke, laser lights, backing sets etc. etc. New Wave/Punk started in 1977 mostly and the bands did away with all the cliche' kitsch and just got back to the music. I was hooked as soon as I saw the 'Heads play in a hockey rink in 78'.

This is one of those bands back when, where the whole is much better than its individual parts. David didn't sing in the traditional sense, so he wrote or chose songs that were anything but traditional, kinda like a Bob Dylan on a bad trip. I guess it was because he took counter culture to the limits & then one step further. I didn't get why he initially wanted the chorus sang in Japanese, but wound up in French. Now after hearing it again, for some reason I got it.
