- The Beatles filmed an appearance for the BBC television show Top Of The Pops on this day at Riverside Studios in London. They performed two songs: Ticket To Ride and Yes It Is.
This was the last time the group recorded a mimed performance exclusively for the show. Rehearsals and filming began at 1.30pm. The Beatles wore the fawn-coloured jackets they would later wear for their Shea Stadium concert on 15 August 1965.
The edition of Top Of The Pops, the BBC's flagship music programme, was shown on Thursday 15 April from 7.30-8pm. It was later wiped by the BBC, in common with their archiving rules at the time.
However, a snippet of the performance was included in an episode of Doctor Who entitled The Executioners, part of a mini series known as The Chase. The episode was first screened on 22 May; although the episode of Top Of The Pops did not survive, the episode of Doctor Who did, and as a result part of The Beatles' performance from this day was preserved.
The episode was originally to have included The Beatles appearing as themselves in the future, wearing make-up to look older. However, Brian Epstein objected and the producers used the Top Of The Pops performance instead. - Hudba
Fifty years later, the Beatles are still listened to, and Doctor Who is still on TV.
Can't beat the classics
+Barnards Loop Well, Doctor Who's 1965 sidekick, 'Vicky Pallister', did say "I didn't know that the Beatles played classical music". But Vicky was supposedly from the 25th century, and the Beatles are guaranteed to be listed as 'classical' by that time period. They say that this Beatles video clip survived, because it was associated with a 1965 doctor who episode. However it was common practice to wipe video tapes on those days, and lots of 1960s Doctor Who episodes were also wiped.
I find it appropriate that the Beatles appeared on Doctor Who, after all they were the ONLY thing in the country that were just bigger than the Daleks at the time. I remember learning about both Beatlemania and Dalekmania.
Every time Beatles music was used in Doctor Who, it was a Dalek episode... "The Chase," "The Evil of the Daleks," and "Remembrance of the Daleks." It's appropriate because Dalekmania came right on the heels of Beatlemania.
Wow. I didn't know they played Classical music.
Ironic that this was from a surviving 1960's Doctor Who episode
This little bit of footage is great. Thanks Doctor Who! Awful 60's policy by the BBC to wipe all their live shows. Just awful!
+Astrosjer What I read was they were still wiping these tapes into the late seventies, even after the archiving policy went into effect.
it's not only BBC, many TV stations wiped their shows
It really depended on the production company and who held the rights to the masters. Desilu studios held on to almost everything, because Lucille Ball (the "lu" part of "Desilu") saw the potential for selling syndicated copies of their old shows. Other companies (including the BBC in Britain) saw TV as something more ephemeral-why would someone possibly want to watch a 12 year old B&W episode of a TV show when they could watch a new one, and in colour?"
It's sad, but no one could imagine that home video was going to be a thing in the years to come.
While its true that no one could foresee vhs coming in a near future, Abbey road instructed its employees to keep everything the Beatles did archived and safe. They were big enough at the time of this appearance (and the rain/paperback writer one, also wiped) for them not to consider the importance of not wiping a Beatles performance at the time.
Saved by the Doctor Who episode, "The Chase"
Saved by The Executioners, an episode of Doctor Who. The doctor, Ian, Barbara and Vicki looked at it through a Time-Space Visualiser the Doctor got as a souvenir from Xeros in The Final Phase.
I have strong memories of going to Television Center where my Father worked as a sound supervisor. That day, the Beatles performed on the Blue Peter show. "Ticket to Ride'. I was in the vision control room when the recording was made. I was deeply irritated that I could not see the group with my own eyes, the lighting gantry blocked my view, so I watch it on the bank of studio monitors. I heard that the police had to hold back a crowd outside but there was no incident - although the 8 year old me feared there would be. I think The Beatles wore the same kit as in the Top of the Pops show,. I have searched for a long time for any evidence of this event but have been told it never happened. Well, I'm here to state that it did, but I have no evidence at all and my Father has died and I didn't ever ask him about it as an adult. Can anyone corroborate my experience ?
The Beatles are the best
Fucking hell, top of the pops has been around for a VERRRYYYY long time
Thanks a lot, Doctor Who.

London 1965
Is this the section that survived in the Doctor Who story 'The Chase'?
The whole story survived actually.
Yes.
I've missread your comment apperantly. an now I feel stupid...
This surviving footage of the Beatles is in the DR WHO episode....
Was a bit cringe of Brian to keep them off DW, oh well
From doctor who and totp 1965
Pisses me off that this scene was removed from the US DVD release of _The Chase._
Wait, they removed it? That’s lame.
@@superduck6456 completely lame! For a program that complained that the BBC wiped episodes in the 1970's, to wipe a piece of the story out in the 2000's is completely insane and immoral just because they WOULDN'T pay the royalties for a 30 second clip of music. I have the video with the missing clip. I refused to buy the video!
Where can I find the Beatles at Top Of The Pops 1966 playing Paperback Writer and Rain
Those are not recorded at 'Top of the Pops'.
The Beatles made some promo videos which they distributed to television shows.
In recent years, they've released a DVD with a selection of promo videos.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1_%28Beatles_album%29#1+
A note: Apple Corps have uploaded some more of these promo videos to their VEVO channel, which is here: czcams.com/users/TheBeatlesVEVO
Just found : czcams.com/video/In_iPlxopsk/video.html
@@Ratelzwatel Yes there were promo films made but there was also an appearance on Top of the Pops playing these songs as well!
This exists thanks to doctor who
How
@@Tik1800 because it was used in a scene in the doctor who story called the chase in which the characters were watching the Beatles on a device called the space time visualiser then later the episode of top of the pops this clip comes from was wiped but the doctor who episode wasn't wiped so this clip survives as a result.
