//Hi friends! Today's video is a college week in my life nyc. This video shows what college is actually like. Not all of my weeks are productive, busy, and full of energy. Some college weeks are just... off. I think it's important to show the off weeks too. I hope you still enjoy this college week in my life video!

I struggle from insomnia during every particularly stressful period of my life. My mom is a psychologist and taught me to go to my "place" when I can't sleep. That basically means to close your eyes and imagine you're at the most peaceful, comforting place for you. You go through all your 5 senses and think about what it looks like, feels like, smells like, sounds like, and tastes like. That always calms me down and if I still can't sleep I do crossword puzzles until I can't keep my eyes open. The crossword puzzles are helpful because for me it's my mind that keeps me awake and they distract me from my thoughts.

Thank you so much for writing this! I also struggle from insomnia and i've tried everything, my doctor even gave me some pills (all natural) that should help me relax and fall asleep but nothing has ever worked! Meditating and journaling sometimes helps but many other times it doesn't! So I'm very happy to try our your method!

I struggle with insomnia too; especially when I'm stressed or burnt out. I know your struggle, and it is okay to be honest about it. Some of the things that have helped me...taking a few moments to journal everything that is racing through my mind or making lists of everything that needs to be done; drinking Sleepytime tea (this legitimately works so well!); or playing worship music.

I know insomnia is such a deeply personal struggle and everyone struggles with it for a different reason so I don’t know if this will help anyone but I thought I’d share my story! I used to struggle with a lot of anxiety and insomnia until I was about 16 and there were a few things that helped me. Pretty much every single night I would barely sleep because I was constantly just grappling with fear and anxiety but I found this verse that gave me so much comfort Psalm 4:8 “In peace I will both lie down in sleep for you alone Oh Lord make me dwell in safety.” And after I found that verse every single night I would read it and just pray that promise over myself over and over again until I fell asleep and it still to this day gives me so much comfort.
Another less spiritual thing I do when I can’t fall asleep is I just daydream and I know that sounds so silly but it works so well for me. Pretty much every single night when I’m ready to go to sleep I let my brain wander and think about things I’m excited about or things I want to happen or even just random happy daydreams and I fall asleep within minutes. I know that’s super weird haha but it works for me so I thought I’d share! :)

hey Michelle totally get you with insomnia!!! I go to hunter college in Manhattan and struggle at least 3 times a week falling sleep. I get really anxious about the next day and the things I have to do that it keeps me up at night and I suffer the next day. It's a constant cycle every week and i hate it. I think it has a lot to do with commuting in the city.I live an hour and thirty minutes from home and just thinking about the commute makes me anxious which adds stress!! Hope you can read this and see that you are not alone!!!

Hey Michelle! I also have a lot of sleepless nights, and I've learned that if I do something mind numbing, like reading through Wikipedia pages, I will fall asleep quicker. I also recommend having your room a little warmer than you're used to, because it can help make you sleepy.
As a side note, I was wondering if you could do an updated video of foods you eat in a week! I'm a junior in college, but this is my first year living in an apartment and I feel like I'm eating the same things every week. Would love some inspo.
I hope that you're able to get some sleep and that the rest of your week goes well ❤️

First of all I completely love your videos, even when you show the struggles it motivates me !
I suffer from Insomnia from time to time mainly because of anxiety so here are some things that I do that may or may not help
    1. Drink a hot tea to help me relax
    2. Turn on my diffuser with essential oils, especially lavender
    3. Put on some lavender essential oil on mi wrist or/and on my pillow
    4. Meditate or do yoga, you could be amazed of how breathing conciously can help
    5. Write or journal
    6. Add an extra blanket or surround myself with pillows, the extra weight over me or feeling surrounded gives me a lot of comfort as weird as it can sound , and totally helps me fall asleep
    7. Lastly sometimes I just switch the side of the bed where I sleep, or put my head where my feet normally are
These are some of my tips, I have tried a million things , some nights are good and some nights are the worst, sometimes I do just one thing, some others I have to try every single one of them. I totally get how exhausting and frustating can be, hope any of it helps or if you don't read this I hope someone can use any of these tips!
You are amazing Michelle, and have no idea how inspiring you are💕

Something that helps me sleep when I’m struggling is sort of a twist on the “go to your happy place” where you build a peaceful home. I have no idea where I heard this and I couldn’t find a link, but basically you imagine your ideal location (I usually start with a meadow by a stream) and start putting together all the details, letting your mind flow naturally. Ex: it’s one story, there’s a porch with a wooden swing, the front door is blue, etc.
Hope it starts to get better for you 😌

I struggled with insomnia TERRIBLY in high school and in college. It finally got better once I started working full time...I guess I just tired myself out lol but I do have a hard time just shutting my brain off at night. I swear my brain just comes up with the most random, terrible, things to think about as soon as it's 10pm. So I've allowed myself to fall asleep watching TV shows/vlogs, listening to music- and podcasts has been a good one too. I think the best thing is to try to be aware of what either keeps you up or wakes you up. Be totally honest with yourself about it. If it's certain things you tend to worry about at night, try to allow yourself time to worry about it in the daytime instead so it's not suddenly hitting you at night. Also, make sure you're taking good care of yourself during the day and try to give yourself as much "you" time to decompress as you can...I think it really is true that many times we're so busy during the day that our body and mind are just overwhelmed from it all at night. We go from going at 100mph to suddenly laying down and saying okay, shut down! Your body doesn't have time to take it all in, make time for itself to relax, think about necessary things, etc so it makes time by keeping you up.

Michelle, I struggle with insomnia too, and one thing I use is the Abide app! It won't cure your insomnia or anything but it's a Christian meditation app and there's a section with bedtime stories where they read you a Bible story and talk to you about it for like an hour and a half. It doesn't always put me right to sleep but it will relax you a lot and when your insomnia isn't as bad, it's a great habit to have! I also take a gummy melatonin vitamin every night that you can just get at the grocery store!

I by no means have insomnia, but I have a lot of anxiety at night as well as severe migraines that keep me awake. I know for me, I make sure to give myself tangible goals for the day and give myself at least a little bit of down time. If I schedule too much into my day or expect myself to accomplish more than what’s possible, I keep myself thinking about how I should be working and not sleeping. This is obvious, but if I am on my phone or even watching tv or reading a book for long periods of time, that sometimes keeps me up because my brain wants to stay active. I’ve recently started really prioritizing my nightly routine of getting ready for bed and I think that helps my brain and body know that it’s time to go to bed. Occasionally, I wear a sleep mask if I am wide awake and am tempted to get back up, look at my phone, or even watch the clock. I also find that if I eat right before bed or have been studying for hours without breaks, it can keep me awake. You’ve probably tried these things but I hope you find something that helps! Lack of sleep is so stressful and I know it makes me feel so overwhelmed. Remember that no matter how overwhelmed you feel, God is always greater than your worries ❤️

Hey I don’t usually comment but I’m a junior in college in Chicago and last year I really struggled with insomnia to the point where I had a breakdown from not sleeping. I finally saw a sleep specialist and they recommended light therapy in the morning and then taking 1 mg of melatonin around 7:30 at night and honestly it helped so much! My sleep still isn’t 100% but definitely an improvement from not being able to fall asleep until 4 or 5 am hope this helps!

Michelle , try "L-Theanine" - that will put you to sleep.
Also, 5-HTP -(Amino acid). The first will make you very drowsy, the second produces seratonin, (Which calms you down).
I cannot take either without falling asleep.
    They are natural supplements.
Also, the stimulant caffeine needs to be lessened. You need to cut down on that. What it does is wire you up. How do you expect to sleep when you've stimulated your self? Cup or two, but no more, and certainly not after 3pm.
    Hope that helps.

I have actually been struggling with insomnia for the first time the past couple of weeks. I usually fall asleep as soon as I hit my pillow, but not recently. I am going to try a melatonin supplement and hopefully that helps.

Hey Michelle, I’m a junior in college and I started having insomnia my sophomore year of college. And now it’s starting to spark up again. I know most of it is due to stress but I know exactly how you feel! I would hate to take Benadryl every night but getting no sleep and keeping up with a college schedule is very hard :( I might try melatonin I heard that can be a more natural solution
