- Crazy disaster of a sinking sailboat in Simpson Bay Lagoon on St Martin, Caribbean. Not sure what the guy was doing with living in the liferaft, but seems his only concern while his boat was sinking was getting some cigarettes!

I'm going to buy a sailboat one day, have no idea how to sail, but I will keep cigarettes and beer on board just in case this happens to me.

. On december 25th 2014, I saw him volontary hit the Sandy Ground bridge with his sailboat. The bridge was close for the day. After, he turn back in the lagoon and the sailboat was like on your video, sinking. When I talked to him about help, he answered ''All is Ok, come onboard take a beer!'' ???
Poor Guy, I would of given him 10 beers if I could of.
Why was his Spinnaker out?
Its pretty obvious he is not the owner of the boat. He most likely opened the liferaft and was in the process of stealing it.

+Tommy Jinks With a slow leak, he most likely had placed a powerful gasoline pump aboard, emptied the water and the spinnaker was hoisted to pull the boat into deeper water when the tide rose. Refloating a boat is only a big problem when it's in deep water or has a big hole in the hull.

Wow, cool video Rick! I think his knowledge of the English language might have been somewhat limited. Common courtesy would have been for the person to respond to you, thank you for the offer to assist and let you know that help was on the way..I have seen his type of response before when people just didn't know enough of the language to respond with a complete sentence...Looked like a really nice boat, hope he was able to repair things..all of the boats electronics aren't going to be happy with that salt water...

offplanetevent ~ I am asking a serious question because I don't know the answer. I understand there would not be much fuel or oil in a boat this size (and being a sail boat) but I don't know the answer. We had a tug boat sink to it's deck and created a mess in a river mouth...

offplanetevent he also said it sank a few weeks prior to this video and had been in the same spot. Even though I didn't see anything leaking doesn't mean it didn't leak when if first sank.

So all his credit cards/money sank too? Stay in a hotel like the rest of us would do. Iv'e stayed in a few lovely hotels in St Martin, Maybe he could tow his half sunken boat to Maho beach and let the jet engines dry it out:-)

Rick Moore Started another >1 month bicycle tour in Europe this Spring. Got assaulted by 2 African migrants in Paris and was flown home for emergency surgery on my head. I'm ok though. Never had the surgery, but my eyesight is compromised and I didn't get my trip, which was all about health to begin with.

That wasn't his boat. That was some dirt bag that swam out and was stealing stuff for salvage. Sails, Nav equipment, etc. Then used the inflatable to hall it to shore.

+Ian Hall You'd be surprised how cheaply you can by an old yacht, like this, for. I'm actually shopping myself, and I'm seeing pretty nice 80's era yachts for around $5k to $10k - depending on condition. It's not uncommon, particularly in Europe, for the poor to by up cheap yachts and live aboard.
