My professor set this as the only extra credit assignment for the class, worth 2% of the total grade. Completely optional, with incentive, the way it should be.
I sometimes find that if i study and then pretend i'm teaching someone else what i just learned, it helps me understand better. Imagine trying to explain something to someone else and you don't fully understand it, it would be embarrassing if they asked you something and you didn't know the answer!
I just watched all five videos in this series. Hands down the best study strategy videos I've encountered (and BELIEVE ME, I searched high and low). I used the deep vs shallow method on the first chapter of my Gen Bio and it's SO much easier to recall these concepts versus just memorizing them. It's like magic lol
My personal opinion is professor Scott Brechner from lbcc He's my favorite super helpful and a great teacher czcams.com/play/PLGpClaI8mTmopP6d4-EYBuWDnwg_IHZUC.html Hope this helps!
Sir, I will be giving a very important competition exam. With your strategies, you have really blessed me with all I could ask for. Simple strategies, I wish I knew 10 years ago! thank you once again.. one of the best things I have actually come across on Internet !!
Me too!! I'm nearly 30 years old and I've been studying ineffectively for that entire time. I'm in grad school now and am excited to use these strategies! Best wishes to you and your academic career :)
@@itoldyounottotouchit3336 lol, I don't remember making that comment! I just about passed with a 2:2 degree. Thankfully I got lucky and somehow got into a PhD at a reputable uni, and have (I hope) much better study/work habits now :)
Thank you for providing us with more DOs than DON'Ts! That surely helped me stay out of the funk of not knowing how to study but, moreso focusing on how to better prepare. I really enjoyed this series and will let my professor know that I appreciate her for sharing this series with us!
I never really studied in high school because I guess I approached the whole base of knowledge from a shallow point of view. This is so helpful, and a much more interesting way to learn. Thank you, I'll attempt to use this deep learning in my freshman year, which I'm currently in the first week of.
I love how after watching these sets of videos that it already makes you think about how you will study and ways you can apply these ideas and methods to everyday life, now you know how to smart
Thank you SO much for taking the time to create these videos. It's mind blowing that I've never been taught any of this... better late than never! Appreciate your knowledge, Dr. Chew.
Wow. Thanks Dr. Chu I am currently applying to graduate school and I have always had issues with studying. This is one of the best videos I have found on how to study using proactive skills and not passively learning materials. Big Thumbs Up to you.
I am glad I have been doing my studying correctly in most cases. As with anything, I saw this video to improve, and my room for improvement got a bit fuller today.
Thank you so much for these videos! I kept asking teachers for help during high school and all of their directions were vague and they tended to recommend shallow techniques! Ugh! When I go back to college this Spring, I intend to use these techniques. They make ages more sense than what I've been taught all this time! I can't understand why the other techniques are taught when they make no sense and don't work!
Thank you so much for this informative series! It was really helpful to recognize some of the mistakes I make while studying. I will now definitely try to improve my study skills!
Great set of videos on learning. Very pragmatic and applicable ideas and concepts. I will apply them myself and share the ideas with my students and children. Well done Professor.
Woohoo!! Made it through all 5 videos! Thanks so much for teaching us these skills, I can't wait to put these into action, hopefully I do them properly and they work!
The professor zoomed in on a few of the poor habits that I've done in the past such as highlighting certain passages of reading. I am one that is a hands on learner. My organization is very jumbled sometimes but it is a way in which my notes are suitable for me. I look forward to continuing on in this class.
This is the problem with our education system. Form the very start in Primary/Elementary school, they don't teach us why and how we learn honestly but rather we are just tricked into learning.
Very helpful videos...Was starting to panic because I am doing the recommended readings for my course, but I am not retaining anything, I'll try these methods, and hope for the best.
5 weeks into my freshmen year, decided I needed to change my way of thinking, I made great grades in high school but I struggled with a math test that was suppose to be review, luckily though I have plenty of time to get it right.
I have 2 finnish high school at 34 but thanks learned many important things.I watch another video and was able to remember 2 different lines of 10 different words bt makeing a story in my head I would remember.Things I like to learn are always easyer to remember I need to make other things interesting also. When I was young my Dad got Harry Lorain witch worked but never kept useing the things I learnt till they became natural. No with the Net and brains you can learn things much easyer following-
great video, i figured out Im at the good side of deep processing so far. and i hope i can benefit well on it. and im now ready to put away distractions. God bless to us, those who are preparing to make good grades in their exams :)
Hi SU. Is this series up to date or is there a newer version covering more recent research? I think this is brilliant and pretty much tells me why I’m not improving in maths. Thanks.
"Students may be required to have a cover sheet on their paper. Some students fail to have that cover sheet and they lose points..." Plus one for the traditional education system as they try to create drones. I'm not surprised more and more people turn to self learning with online resources.
I could learn that what I think while I'm studying is the most important thing. Also The Do's and Don'ts let me know what to do to improve my study habits.
Thanks Dr. Chew I observed I have been using the shallow and the deep learning strategy ever since Now I am going to involve myself with the deep learning strategy.
I found these videos very helpful. Unfortunately I am the student who uses shallow strategy skills :-( I do also use some deep skills as well. However I am open to learning new things. "Don't be the student who....." I Cram. I try not to but somehow I drift can't focus that great. I read and reread constantly wondering if I'm interpreting it correctly. My worst thing is second guessing myself
This last video tells us about do's and don'ts to help us with what we do and better prepare on exams. The strategies said can help us learn and how he brakes them down in parts.
It sounds mean what I am about to say but after watching the 5 videos my head hurts and I am not motivated to improve anymore, maybe tomorrow I will feel motivated again. 😢
Who else here are watching this cause your professor made you?
First year college, and ye
Doing homework for a friend. Ironically He'd be doing better exams if he didn't make me do his homework.
Could use my school website, came to youtube instead to watch it at 2x speed
Bruh I am a Sophomore gotta waste my time on this bs

dude, that's such a great idea
You mean the Feynman method?
Cheers if you made it this far!
Funny how the view count goes down with each video. I guess those people didn't get the most out of studying.

Still useful 6 years later! Did you get to being a PA (asking as a future PT) :)

Overpreparing for an exam is much better than “starting out in a hole”. This video allowed me to actively reflect on my study habits.

Thank you Dr. Chew. These are good tips. I've used shallow processing and now I know why I been struggling.
Thank you so much for taking the time and energy to give this insightful guide. I needed it!
Thank you so much for keeping this video up, although it's from 12 years ago it helped me a lot!
What a helpful and insightful series towards meaningful studying. I will definitely change my habits accordingly.
Thank you Dr. Chew.

Great advice from the entire series!
Excellent series!! Big WOW!!! Is explained very simply, yet very realistically. Great job! Tks.

Thank you Prof Stephen Chew
The most useful study tip video i have ever came across all these stupid youtubers who say useless info and tips on studying should watch this
Woohoo!! Made it through all 5 videos! Thanks so much for teaching us these skills, I can't wait to put these into action, hopefully I do them properly and they work!
I agree because some of us use the same methods of studying which may not work.
Wise words from a wise man. Thank you very much for your awesome video series
