      Not rigged, The umpires have just 20secs to make a call, and they admitted afterwards, they got this one wrong. ETNZ went on to win the rest of the regatta convincingly

    • @MikeB-lm6yw
      @MikeB-lm6yw Před 5 lety

      The umpires admitted later that day that they got the penalty wrong. Also... if the cup was rigged, it definitely wouldn't have been rigged in New Zealand's favor! On a side note, this wasn't the cup, or the Louis Vuitton. This was the challenger series. If Artemis had won this race, it wouldn't have made any difference in the long run.

    • @ficklemedia8733
      @ficklemedia8733 Před 5 lety +4

      Mike B its good to know this wasn’t an important race. Thanks for pointing that out However. It’s perfectly possible for the race to have been ‘favoured’ to ‘Emirates New Zealand’. Let’s not forget they are backed by one of the wealthiest organisations on the planet. The commentators have to say ‘emirates’ before the name of the place they come from. This says a lot to me. I’m British but will be cheering for American Magic in the next cup. simply because they are not using the sponsors name first. Unlike INEOS team uk. I’d love to see our dear sport free of corporate interference.

      America's Cup I wasn’t attempting to take anything away from the kiwi’s. they are hands down best sailors on the planet. They proved that enough times. However. It’s saddens me deeply that this debacle presented to us a ‘umpiring’ is allowed to so badly deface the beautiful sport we love. I sincerely hope things have improved by the next cup. Decisions have to be correct. Instantly. I’m sure the technology exists to make this happen. So lets see it next time. Btw. Thanks for posting this. Sorry for the little outburst. I just hate to see such unfairness in sport

    • @MikeB-lm6yw
      @MikeB-lm6yw Před 5 lety +1

      @@ficklemedia8733 - The reality of the America's cup is that if you want to run a successful campaign, you either need corporate sponsorship or a billionaire's checkbook. The America's cup is about innovation and sailing skill. To have the technology and the best sailors, you need the $$$. That's one of the amazing things about the New Zealand campaign - Larry Ellison (the Oracle billionaire behind Oracle Team USA) - could (and probably did) easily outspend Emirates Team New Zealand. New Zealand needed to think outside the box and beat the other teams with better ideas. Team NZ was just hours away from shutting down in 2015 due to lack of $$. As far as umpires being able to get it right 100% of the time - in the moment - I don't really think that's possible... I do, however, feel that it's important that the umpires were willing to admit that they made a mistake. As far as I'm aware, this was the only really bad call from the whole event, which when you consider how many races there were and the fact that they were racing such fast boats, I think the umpires did a really good job. Finally... if you're looking for a more pure form of sailing, the America's cup is not where you want to be looking. It's full of politics, egos, and dollars, but to be honest, that's probably a big part of what makes it so fascinating. You'll probably find more of what you're looking for if you go down to your local sailing club on the weekend - although you'll probably still have umpires making the occasional bad call...

    On the 2nd foul, I believe that the commentating is erroneous. It says "there is an overlap." Not so: NZ arrives in the zone on starboard, while Sweden is on port. So the rule about leaving adequate mark room (by Sweden) and about a 'seaman-like' rounding (NZ) doesn't apply. The point, I think, is that NZ had to throw in an emergency gybe to avoid collision with Sweden (or at least, that's how they sold it: whether there would, in fact, have been contact is unclear). The only possible objection is that NZ (starboard right-of-way), by overstanding the mark in order to force a port-starboard encounter, wouldn't have been sailing its 'proper course' (the course it would take to finish fastest in the absence of any other boats), since gybing at the mark (where they did) would have been its proper course--except that there's no requirement, as far as I'm aware, to sail proper course in this situation. (There are precious few situations when a boat *must* sail its proper course.)
