- A few weeks ago, Faith Matters released a video we called “Why Church?” It features several of our favorite people, who gave really thoughtful answers to that question that is present for so many.
Today, we’re sharing Tom Christofferson’s Restore talk, which addresses the next question: “How Church?” Tom describes in poignant and sometimes hilarious detail his experiences joining a new ward where so many people are so unlike him, and, in the end, found that that was kind of the point.

Tom Christofferson has spent his career in investment management and asset servicing, living in Los Angeles, New York, Luxembourg, San Francisco, and London. He has served on corporate and non-profit boards, including serving as a director of Encircle, a group providing resources to support LGBTQ individuals and their families in Utah County, and a member of the national advisory council of the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah. He has published two books with Deseret Book: That We May Be One: A Gay Mormon’s Perspective on Faith and Family (2017) and A Better Heart (2020).

My dad sent me this video because the ward mentioned is my family's ward (the ward I grew up in and half my family still attend).
I can tell you it certainly brought tears to my eyes, the whole talk. I am so proud of my home ward and I know from experience (I've moved around a lot and been a member of at least 7 different wards and branches) that what he said was a hilariously accurate account. I've only been in one other ward that was quite so open and loving, and I definitely think it is something we should all strive for in our church communities. ❤

Though I am struggling with a marriage separation it isn’t like I can imagine what he has had to cope with. Certainly you get my respect for your testimony and this delivered testimony.

Brother Christofferson, this was my first time hearing you, I googled you to learn more. I feel your faith is a unique treasure. I struggle to be spiritually-minded and not cardinal- minded. I trust the straight and narrow way. I pray for my future fullness, I have no problem trusting God for the future of his church. I don’t know if you get push back, you’ve have given me joy and hope.
