I’m also born and raised on Vancouver Island. Biggs whales are what transient whales used to be called. They were called Biggs Whales in memory of Micheal Bigg, as he did such legendary and thorough research on orcas. You should search his name. It’s actually quite an interesting story. This is how I understand the story, though I’m no expert. It’s quite interesting when you start looking at the very different characteristics of the different types of orca. Thanks for commenting
Thank you Chad :) In 2012, a movement in the research community started by Dr. John Ford to call Transient Killer Whales Bigg's Killer whales in honor of Dr. Michael Bigg was documented in a photo-identification publication available at www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/Library/346784p1.pdf which states in the Introduction "We have chosen to use the name ‘Bigg’s killer whale’ rather than ‘transient killer whale’ based on recommendations proposed by the global killer whale research community (Ford 2011) to honour the late Dr. Michael Bigg, pioneering killer whale research scientist."
Awesome is the right word. I've stood on those rocks many times, and have never seen anything as primal as that, and under those brooding gray skies, too! So "Biggs" is associated with a "transient" pod, is this pod well-known? Are any of the frames clear enough to ID tail spots, etc.? Very cool!
I believe Biggs is a reference to the well known Micheal Biggs, a researcher the did much in the way of us knowing more about their activities. Others carry on his work, including his daughter. She's a lovely lady, very knowledgeable. I m no expert, just a silly human that enjoys admiring these creatures. A quick google search will provide you with much more than I know. Thanks for watching
Absolutely AMAZING! Thanks for sharing this!
