Deshamanya Wannakuwatta Waduge Don Albert Perera (Sinhalese: වන්නකුවත්ත වඩුගේ දොන් ඇල්බට් පෙරෙරා; 5 December 1927 - 3 November 2016) better known by his adopted name Amaradeva, was a prominent Sri Lankan vocalist, violinist and composer. Primarily using traditional instruments like sitars, tablas and harmoniums, Amaradeva incorporates Sinhala folk music with Indian ragas in his work. Many consider Pandit Amaradeva’s contribution to the development of Sinhala music as unmatched, hence arguably cited as the Icon of Sri Lanka Music (si. හෙළයේ මහා ගාන්දර්වයා).

This is a great tribute for several reasons! Umaria is perhaps one of the foremost vocal artists we have today. She is trendy, chic and savvy etc. However, I think that some serious level of criticism is vital if she tries to ascend the next, but the most difficult steps; and I think UMA-RIA is mature enough to take my generalised points soberly. Although Umaria's singing is appealing to a wider contemporary audience, most of her recent efforts sound very mechanical and abstract; point blank, these interpretations lack soul. They are just a showcase of repertoire; consequently, not comparable with the great old iconic singers' renditions: Amaradeva, Nanda Malani and some others (please consider their early renditions; when they were at Umaria's age). Sometimes, a very simple composition and a few tactics those singers use elevate their works to divinity. Simply, the difference is like between WTC (Colombo) and Taj Mahal. The repertoire is nothing without soul! This is a great tribute because it points to the chasm. This is a very honest and loving reminder. I think only Umaria can find a way to fix this; perhaps, a bit of suffering will do... Good Luck!
