this is a fantastic hobby for me, in my retirement,
Video 2
Basic Bowl
This video is not so much about making a basic bowl, it's more about the piece of timber it came from,
A piece of wood found on a demolition site in a sorry state that was destined for the land fill,

Very nice bowl Harry, great save with the old wood. I bet there is loads of good quality timber that just ends up in land fill sites all over the country that could be put to better use. Great video thanks for sharing.
All the best
Tony
***** Thanks Tony, it breaks my heart to see what is Burnt and berried these days, I always stop at demolition sites, to see what I can pick up. Especially the buildings that's been standing for many years around Liverpool, this piece came from the famous paradox night club here in Liverpool, so a nice piece of history behind the wood, take care mate all the best, Harry
I like your depth finder. Very nice bowl Harry.
Thanks again Jack, yes the depth finder is a handy piece of kit, not sure where I got the idea from, but I’m sure it was someone on CZcams,
Best wishes

Carl Jacobson Thank you Carl, I appreciate your comments,

I love finding old lumber, well actually any good wood Harry. The hunt is almost as fun as turning it. Watching a chunk of what some may call trash turn into a form of beauty is awesome. You made a spectacular save.
Thanks for the video.
Mark
MARK Baid Hi Mark, thanks mate, 90% of what I make is with salvaged timber, when you make a piece with salvaged / re claimed timber there is always a story behind it, thank you for watching Mark, Best wishes, Harry
I have yet to buy a piece of wood Harry. You are right the pieces I have been fortunate enough to sell were all about the story of where the wood came from.
Mark

Beautiful bowl Harry, nice save mate. Bet that wood has a bit of history to it too. Great video my friend, well done, and thanks for the toffee :-}
Take care
Mike
Mike Waldt Thanks Mike, it gives me more pleasure to work with a piece of salvaged timber than anything else, that particular piece came from a very old building, built just after WW2 I'm not sure what it was originally, but for many years it was famous here in Liverpool, as the paradox night club, but now gone to make the road wider, that ends the history lesson, haha, Best wishes mate, Harry
Hi Harry
Thats a lovely bowl well done
i wonder how old that piece of ash is it has a lovely colour
Take care Robbie
Robbiethewoodturner Hi Robbie, thanks for your comment I really appreciate it, the building in the wood came from was built just after the Second World War, and demolished just lately to make way for another ring-road, that time we were importing a lot of timber from America, so I should imagine given the length of time to grow it, could be 2 or 300 years old, what do you think?
Take care mate best wishes Harry.
The Little Garden Shed Workshop HI Harry I would say you are not fare of there.
You definitely have a nice piece of history
The older the ash tree the more browner it is in the heart or center.
Its normally call olive ash
Robbiethewoodturner Hi Robbie, spot on mate, when I found this piece of wood, I originally thought it was oak, but when I cut it into a blank, I thought it was ash, so I took it around to a friend of my fathers, a 90-year-old man who worked all his life in a timber yard in Liverpool,
He has always been the man who identified timber for me, when he said it was olive ash, I thought he was saying it is olive or ash, I just thought he was getting confused, but now I realise it was me that was confused, and the timber is olive ash,
So thank you very much Robbie, you have cleared up some confusion, your knowledge of timber is brilliant mate.
Take care of yourself, Best wishes Harry
At first I saw a face shield. Did it get lost?
Nevertheless, a beautiful bowl.

Nice looking piece of oak Harry, and a great bowl at the end of it. So what are you going to do with that pile of camera quick release plates? ;-)
Cheers
Tom
Tom Stratton Hi Tom thanks very much mate, I'm making some camera arms, just getting the bits together, waiting for the delivery of some t-nuts, then I can start the build, Best wishes Harry,
Nice work, thanks for sharing. How did you mount the bottom of the bowl in order to turn the inside? Thanks.
+ward459 thank you, I used a thin mortise on the base, Best wishes Harry
Harry, how long do you let the wood sit before you start turning on the lathe?
+The College Woodworker
This particular piece was already dry when I got it, I don't turn much wet wood, I prefer to leave it for a few months, it makes less mess in the workshop, haha, thanks for watching and subscription.
Best wishes Harry
Hi Harry ,
Great bowl and beautiful piece of wood ! Your a man after my own heart, I very rarely buy any wood I always use recycled timber from wherever I can find it. I use loads of pallet wood which I can get any amount of from where I work , demolition sites , skips or even just dumped at the side of the road! It's amazing what people just through away in this disposable society.
Have watched and liked both of your videos and subscribed to your channel . Keep up the good work. Trev
By the way if you like your segmented work have a look for" Stephen ogle"s channel his stuff is fantastic, if you haven't already found him!
Trev Sutton Hi Trev, 90% of what I make is with salvaged timber, and i love working with pallet wood, it breaks my heart to see it getting Bernt or going into the landfill when there's so much you can do with it, and yes I know Stephen I never miss's videos I agree with you he’s fantastic, thank you very much for watching, commenting, and subscribing, I really appreciate it, Best wishes, Harry
Nice video. I sent a response to your e-mail. I hope you get it. Sam
