Those are the MWVS at that pricepoint - the ceramic versions, for ceramics pickups they sound incredible. Trevor Wilkinson sure knows what he is doing when he designs pickups.
They have a very full sound, quite warm but still sound like a strat should, not at all brittle.
I have these very same pickups

That is one smooth guitar tone! Your playing is so smooth and melodic. Have to say, each time I hear the soft finger-plucked tune you were playing, it's what I imagine in my head to be gently playing in the background while in a guitar show room. This is the sound I fell in love with and want in my own guitar. I'm trying to mod my mystery Fender Strat and want an upgrade, so this is the type I want. First time trying to rewire, got me a bit agitated at first, but I'm gonna give it a go until it gets done right!

  • @DanielPestanaTranslations

I bought these pickups because of your video. They sound amazing. You wouldn’t believe how many people are trash talking these pickups. I really don’t understand why. They sound awesome. Can’t wait to put them in my HB ST-62.

    • @TempoDrift1480
      @TempoDrift1480 Před 4 lety +8

The only people that trash talk inexpensive stuff are the shmucks who paid top dollar for an instrument and they still cant play worth a fuck. It goes on now more than ever since so much inexpensive stuff is available now. Take an 85 dollar EBay Tele and sand the neck down and dress the frets, 50 dollar set of pickups and new strings and it will hold its own with any $900 fender. I actually prefer my chinese gold top over my 72 Custom.

I love guitar product demos like this one. You played enough for me to be able to get a good feel for the sound of the pickups while not over-playing to stroke that ‘guitarist’s ego’ that we’re all guilty of having. (Although your playing was impeccable.)
You played around in a couple different configurations but didn’t bounce between them so quickly as to not get a feel for clean, overdriven, etc.
I stumbled onto your video during a ‘deep dive’ while looking for a video on a specific Wilkinson trem. Even though these pickups aren’t the part that I was looking for, I’m now seriously considering using them in my Strat upgrade project, and I’ve gained a new guitarist to add to my subscription feed.
Thanks for taking your time to show us things like this!

There's a ceramic vintage and then there's the wvs 60s which are the more expensive alnico's. The latter with the alnico sounds fantastic. Balanced, earthy, and they articulate very well. It doesn't sound muddy when you strum a chord. It also overdrive's very well.

Sounds like a proper Strat tone to me. Perhaps a bit fuller than what a set of, say, SSL-1s would do. BTW, speaking of affordable pickups, Artec is another company that makes great pickups that do not cost an arm & a leg. I use their lipsticks and single coil sized „rail“ PUs, and they easily hold their own against Duncans and DiMarzios (at 1/3rd the price).

After having seen all great reviews I purchased a pre wired pickup guard with these pickups on my 70's Japanese Stat copy and they don't sound good at all using distorsion. It's best described as a good sound with a disturbance on top of it like a bad wiring or something. Or like a string buzzing into the fretboard. Problem is that it's everywhere all over the fretboard and on all strings. It's like a dirty unclean signal and I'm not talking about the distorsion.

But as anyone with ears can hear, these are fine pick ups and will suit the needs of most players.
Maybe if you play everything clean, like jazz players do, you might want the highest end Pick ups you can afford, but if you are adding effects and pedals into the mix, these will do fine and you can save the money towards a quality tube screamer, like in the video.

Hear the "thumpyness"? the Pickups are too close to the strings.

They sound good and quiet. They just dont sound as hot as I like. It could be your settings. Personally, I have "cheap" pickups in some of my guitars and they sound great. I'm not the guy who drinks the koolaid and I like what I like.

More like if you have a Mesa Boogie, you don't have to spend as much on the pickups. Also, you don't have to over-spend to get good pickups (as is shown here). I play Wilkinsons through a Micro Cube and they sound pretty damn good. Thinking of trying them on a stock Squier Tele 2000 standard model. Nice guitar could use better pickups.

@@camilo1455 Would be good to hear them through the Micro Cube as I think a lot of people considering these pickups would have more of a budget amp too. The Micro Cube is a good little budget amp and good for apartment or bedroom use.
