Thank you for watching. Do you find the exercises easy? If so, write EASY in the comments below. If not, just ask me questions and I will help you make it easy.
I’m really looking forward too doing these every day. My voice is weaker than it used to be, I get too self conscious now, and if I crack, I try to focus on that, instead, and lose my confidence
Thank You, I needed this one
If I do something like this I don't know why I feel my head is dizzy 😫
Ms katarina. Do you have a program or certain excercises for MTD...All I have is you.... I keep missing your last post... about a program or something?
I know I spoke to you once before, which was a honor to speak with you....
So what you think.....
Easy
It seems like my voice is weak when I am mentally drained or nervous. It gets so soft that people can’t understand me. It’s intermittent though. I will practice! Thank you. ❤️
If you know that your voice is affected by your emotions and stress, then look at that side of your voice. Strengthen your resilience and emotional endurance.
Same with me 😂 and when I become happy i roar like lion but when I am in tension I can't even headed
Same but when Im at my house my voice sounds like a teacher’s voice (the volume of their voice)
But when im outside (,telling what I want in restaurant, talking to my classmates or random people),my voice is very weak
Maybe because im nervous/suppressing it thinking people might talk about me
Did it heal?
The more lifted the spirits, the stronger the voice
This has not only helped me in strengthening my voice but also controlling my breathing. Thank you Katarina
I am so happy to hear that! Glad it was helpful in multiple ways.

Thank you for sharing this video. I recently had a severe GERD flare-up that had a dramatic impact on my voice. Even after treatment, I never got my vocal strength and clarity back. I've begun doing these exercises to help, and I was surprised to find them somewhat difficult. Obviously I'll pursue further speech therapy if I don't begin to see improvement, but this is a wonderful starting point. Fingers crossed I start to sound more like myself again soon.
Thank you so much! I appreciate this video!
Glad it was helpful!
Absolutely love these exercises!

Thank you Katarina, this is so helpful. Since coughing my way through Covid and Long Covid I’ve despaired over my weak voice and wondered if I’d ever sing again. Now I’m feeling hopeful! ❤
Covid ,long covid ? What a bullshit! Covid was made up disease to introduce fake pandemic. But coronaviruses are real ,over 150 types
Yes, COVID can really affect the functioning of the voice. I wish you all the best!
Incredibly valuable information. Especially for a singer. Straw for a nation is fantastic.

@@healthyvoicetips My pleasure! Thank you for all your kind and informative information. Do you think that this could have a significant positive impact on a singers voice? Just curious what your professional opinion is. Thank you again!

Great video! One of the hardest things to hear is I need to practice twice a day! I know I can do it. Just gotta make myself bc it sure isn’t going to fix itself lol. Thank you again Katarina!
You can do it! It's only two times 10 minutes (or even less). That's it.
@@healthyvoicetips can you tell me when doing the 5 different pitches, is the vibration to come from the lips? Mine varies but I was curious. I start in the throat but eventually work it properly to be more front face. It’s wild how the muscles and brain work like that.

Easy! Thank you 😊
Great to hear!
Thank you so much, Katarina. For me these exercises are not easy but my voice lacks stamina after surgery some years ago and I am trying to strengthen it so I will stick to this routine twice daily and hope I'm doing it right. I'll keep watching the video to make sure!

I love you! I noticed when I-got to D on the straw training the sound quality wasn’t as strong as the other keys.
That is normal. A shift in how you make that sound.
Thank you Katarina madam.
No problem!
Katrina, thank you for your videos, The higher notes (D) were very difficult. I could not find the 7 step voice-body-mind video you referenced in the above video. The problem I am concerned with weak, scratchy voice, sometimes when I attempt to project my voice even a little, it stops altogether !
Tom Z
Hi @Tom Z, I am sorry to hear that you are having voice issues. I demonstrated the 5 note exercise on a range that fits my voice, you probably need to move down and practice 5 notes in your comfortable vocal range. The link to the 7 step video is here: how2improvesinging.mykajabi.com/strong-voice-without-tension
Also, I am wondering if you have seen an ENT (voice specialist) to have your voice properly evaluated. If you have any further questions, let me know.
@@healthyvoicetips Good Morning Katrina,
Thanks for your response. Yes, about 4 months ago I visited an ENT due to a clogged ear issue. She observed my hoarse with pauses in my speech. After the vocal cord examination she said my vocal cords were not completing closing.
After searching CZcams I found your videos. I learned right away that I should not be constantly clearing my throat which I was doing a lot.
I think the STRAW PHONATION is beginning to help.
I am now going to link to the 7 step video.
Thanks Again

Thanks for the tips. I've been trying singing with my lips partially closed to strengthen my voice, but I may have put too much strain on my throat...I'll try these tips once I've recovered.
Easy! I have had 2 cerebellum strokes. The 2nd one left me with dysarthria. You help my weak voice!

I'm on day 3 and this is still very hard for me, but I'm determined. My voice tends towards nasality and I'm probably trying too hard to eliminate that. But I always feel good after these exercises, so I'm grateful to you for the instructions. Take care :3
I am happy to hear that you like the exercise. I am not sure if that is the right exercise for making your voice less nasal. But if you feel good after the exercise, it means that it is doing something beneficial. Keep going.
@@healthyvoicetipsThanks for replying! Yeah, I also do other exercises that deal with nasality specifically, but I've really needed to strengthen my voice in order to do them effectively. So I will definitely keep going!
It's good if you have a few different exercises, each addressing a different goal. You got this!
Thanks
No problem.

i will go see a doctor first.
I am happy to talk to you whenever you are ready.
Why can't everyone be as talented as you are
Believe me, I am not talented. Just experienced.

Great!
Easy peasy. Thank you. I am a 75 yr old who has been wWriting and singing covers for the past 2 1/2 years. I have been told that I have a weak voice and also a wobbly voice. I am more aware of the latter than the former. Do you think these exercises will help both of these “conditions.” Thank you.
My believe is that there is always room for improvement. I am not sure about eliminating wobbly as that can be a sign of an aging voice but strength can be improved at any age.
Hi Katarina, your videos are so helpful thank you so much! I have been diagnosed with reflux laryngitis and my voice is very weak. I can only speak very comfortably when my voice is placed in a particular way but I can only do that in quiet environments otherwise my voice box hurts. Consultant says my larynx is weak, so do you think these exercises will help? I am so upset and fed up of not being able to talk. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you, James

Very good exercices. I also do vowels exercices it helps too :)
That's great!
Hard! They are easy to understand, but not easy for me! I have trouble make my voice loud enough to teach (my job before the stroke). Thanks for these exercises, and I’ll try them out for several weeks. Cheers! 😅
Start with a soft voice and go from there. Work with what you have. You have the challenge of working with muscles that have been affected by a stroke so don't be so hard on yourself!
Thank you so much for what you’re providing in this channel! I started doing this straw exercise & I have one question: when I do the siren or produce the sound of the notes, what amounts of air should flow from the straw? So I know if I’m doing the exercise right. I noticed I don’t flow much air through it.
Yes, that is the point - realize that you don't need that much air for some sounds. Definitely, you don't need too much air for straw exercises.
@@healthyvoicetips thank you 🙏🏼
I think the exercises are easy. I am trying to get back into singing and finding certain notes in my upper mid-range are weak and shaky. To work on these particular notes, should I do the straw exercises an octave above what you demonstrate?
I can't thank you enough for this exercise. I'm recovering from flu n now my voice is extremely very weak. I notice during the exercise, I could hear a creak (like the sound of a door that needs oiling😂) in my vocal notes. But after the exercise, it faded away.
I am happy to hear that the exercise helped. I hope your voice is feeling fine now.
Would you recommend the first exercise (long notes) for someone trying to build up their head voice? I neglected my head voice register for years and am trying to find the best way to start strengthening it.
Yes, absolutely. Work on the range that feels weak. But make sure that you can produce those pitches without constriction.
Hi I have a question for you. Would you do these if your voice is going away or cracking? Or would you just rest the voice? Also what if you need to sing/perform when your voice is weak and cracking. How would you go about that?? (Ps it’s weak and cracking from talking too loud, not singing)
This video is about the strengthening part of the exercises. You can use the same exercises but with a different regime and with a different focus if working with an overworked or strained voice. You don't need to practice different pitches - focus more on the effort levels when doing the exercises.
Hi. I used to sing professionally but have not used my voice regularly for many years. I have lost my range and some pitch and need to rebuild from scratch. When practicing the sirens through a straw, my voice ‘cuts out’ on the way up but is fine on the way down. I’ve only started the sessions a few days ago but was wondering if you have any suggestions or is this just something that will improve with practice? Thank you
That is very normal! Many people experience this. If you want, just do the sirens from top down and notice what you are doing to transition through the break (less air?). Then, start from the top and go back up. And practice in this way.
easy! Thank you! from an old granny with a crackly voice
With pleasure!
I have had vocal dysphonia. I'm having trouble with these exercises. It's easier to do high pitches rather than ones even though I'm an alto. Been getting botox shots for a year that help.
If you are dealing with vocal issues and have been treated with Botox, there may be an anatomical difference that makes this exercise difficult for you. I suggest that you chose a type of exercise that you can do safely without extra tension. Start in your comfortable range.
Hi Katarina, This was easy. Tku ! Just needed to check if you were blowing air gently while blowing the straw or just making the sound ?
Air through the straw while making the sound.
Katarina...would these help lessen a nasal sounding voice??? If not, do you have a video for nasal voice exercises or any ideas how to fix that? Thank you.
I have some videos on the channel to learn how to control nasality of the sound.
Katarina, quick question and I may have asked this before… is any air coming through your nose as you do these or is it all coming through the mouth and straw only? Thank you in advance!
The air is coming through the mouth and the straw. Nothing coming out of the nose. If air is escaping through the nose, either pinch your nose or try to figure out what you need to do to direct the air through the mouth (e.g. pretend you have a cold/blocked nose). I hope this helps.
@@healthyvoicetips Yes thank you!
Hi, i will definately try this exercise.. i am a soprano, a opera singer here in Brasil, and recently i've been ill, and i also have allergies and asthma. But i am ok now, since i consulted my doctor. My vocal chords are normal and okay, but unfortunatelly when i sing any songs in higher range my voice gets weak and low, and that range used to be very easy and bright before. It's been like that for 3 weeks now, so i'm a little desperate... Any advices?? Or other videos you recommend? Please! I would really aprecciated.
It may take some time to get your voice back after being sick. I would recommend exercises that you already know that are beneficial for you. Important concepts to review are support, breath pressure, and vocal fold closure to get a strong sound in the upper range.
@@healthyvoicetips i'll keep that in mind. Thank you! ☺️
This is quite helpful,, ma’am I have a question before start humming do I have to inhale deeply before doing each note or just breath in normally and then go through ?
I'm glad to help. A normal breath would be better. Let me know if you have more questions.
@@healthyvoicetips thank you so much for your reply… yes ma’am I have another question, basically I am a ventriloquist, and your exercises and tips are really helping me to enrich myself. Besides these, is there any additional exercises I can do that’ll help me more in my ventriloquism?
Dear Katerina could you please teach a class on how sing the Cuperto exercise ?
Tony

I don't know that exercise.
Hi Katarina,
What muscles are we strengthening from doing the SOVT exercises? Is it the arytenoids?
I find when I over use my arytenoids, even by just bringing them together, my throat feels tired mostly under the chin area. It can even feel a little painful and sore! Is this normal?
You cannot isolate the work of one particular muscle when doing vocal exercises. They are all working, you are strengthening the whole system and coordination. Arytenoids are cartilages and there are several muscles that bring them together and they come together every time you use your voice. Soreness under the chin can pint to overworking your tongue muscles but again, it is just a guess and most likely, there are other muscle working too.
Do you recommend doing a 5-10 min vocal warm up before doing this in the morning? The sirens are part of your recommended vocal warm up video as well. How is this different then doing the warm up?
That is a good question. The goal of warm ups is different from the goal of strengthening exercises. I would say that the difference is in the frequency and length of the exercise. As you can see, both can use the same vocal exercises.
Hello Katarina, I've just gone through a surgical procedure to remove a polyp/nodule on my vocal, it's been 2 weeks since the surgery do u recommend these sovt for speech therapy? Can u suggest me some other techniques as I'm having issues resonating high pitches. Thanks.
SOVT or straw exercises can be used for vocal rehabilitation. I suggest that you speak to your therapist who can show you how to do these exercises and maybe other exercises too.
Would I be correct in understanding these exercises serve a dual purpose: reducing tension as well as strengthening? Dealing with ongoing MTD, I’m beginning to know which exercises help relieved my muscle pain and tension in my larynx, and I guess I don’t want to rush into exercises that I’m not ready for. Thank you for all you do : )
Good question. The type of exercise that I use in this video are so called SOVT exercises that optimize the vocal function as you do them. Whether you use the straw exercises to strengthen or relax the voice depends on the width of the straw. So for strengthening exercises I would chose a straw with higher resistance.
Easy and effective exercise - one question: why do I find it more difficult to sustain the lower notes?
Are you talking about lower notes than your speaking voice?
Hello, Katrina-these are easy. My question is: Have you ever treated someone with a vocal tremor? I have been told that there is no cure for my tremor, but that I should get Botox injections for this twice a year. My intuition tells me that there must be a way to improve this through exercise and other possible ways. I feel that exercise helps cure many ills. I declined the Botox. What are your thoughts. Thank you! Jane
ME TOO I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM
I am sorry to hear about your vocal trouble. I have helped people with tremor in the past. The goal is to optimize the vocal function. I don't think there is a cure.
Should we be attempting to go through our passagio when doing the siren sound? It appears you travel from your chest to your head voice during it. I am trying to smooth out this transition. Will the siren help? Thanks for the video and your coaching.
Following
Yes, you can cover as much or as little of your range as you want. Generally, sirens are amazing for smoothing out transition breaks.
@@healthyvoicetips thank you

Hi Katarina
I have undergone injection medialization after my idiopathic right vocal cord palsy 2 weeks ago.
I find my voice weak mostly and when I try to be a bit loud , I develop diplophonia.
Is it normal after 2 weaks of medialization injection? Should I try to be loud or I should still try to speak in my weak voice?
Can you help and guide me in this regard please?
I just answered your question under a different video.
Thank you Katarina

Hi Katarina, I have a question!
I'm an elementary school teacher and my voice goes whenever we start the new term. I can feel pain in my throat when I talk to them. I have to talk a lot and fairly loud, so I think I'm straining my voice every day without rest. I'm scared I'm going to permanently damage my voice. Can you advise what would be best? Thank you! :)
The very first step is to have your voice assessed by a laryngologist (that is an ENT doctor who specializes in voices) to make sure that your voice is ok. Then, I would suggest that you start working with a voice therapist (if the laryngologist recommends it). You need to first know how your voice looks and how it functions, then you can start finding solutions. If you have further questions, you can ask me via myhealthyvoice@gmail.com
Thank you so much! ❤️ I really appreciate the time you've taken to reply to me :)
I love you, you are my 😇
Roxana, you are too kind!
Hi! I have had a stutter since I was a kid and have noticed I have a lot of muscle tension when I speak and sing. It hurts when I talk and singing is tough with all the muscle tension. Will these exercises lessen tension when I talk too?
It is tough not to stutter without tension. It is affecting my singing!!
Hi Emily, how are you now? What have you tried that worked for you?
Do you recommend these exercises also for strengthening the singing voice? I mean as the only exercises to do and get a stronger singing voice?
Learning to sing requires more than one exercise. Singing is a learned skill, not a trick.
I was told that my vocal cords are a little weak and I have some inflammation around them possibly due to acid reflux. Are these exercises good for me? I am getting hoarseness often after I got my Covid vaccine and developed a bad cold with it
These exercises will strengthen your weak voice. Talk to your doctor about how to manage your acid reflux and decrease inflammation. That may be also the cause of your hoarseness. Did the doctor suggest voice therapy?
@@healthyvoicetips yes but my copay is $80 for each of those visits and I can’t afford that so I was hoping I could watch your videos and do the exercises for the vocal cords. He prescribed omeprazole for acid Reflux but I prefer to use natural medicine so I am using other things.
When I do the siren exercise, I don’t feel much pressure when reaching the higher notes as compared with doing the lower notes. Am I doing it correctly? Thanks.
You will need different pressures for different pitches. So just be patient and keep exploring how much air you need for the low notes and how much air you need to get through the straw. It's usually less than you think.
@@healthyvoicetips thank you so much for your reply. Really appreciate it. You are awesome! 👍🏻
When I go up in the notes (I don't really understand notes and music) and when I go up in the sirens, my vocal cords do not touch and I can't make a sound. What can I do about that?
Add a little bit of "cry" into your voice. Imagine that you are a small kid complaining about not getting another cookie. Make a sound like that.
Thank you for great tutorial
Could we imitate the straw exercise by just pursing the lips?
EASY
Yes, it is possible but straws will give you more resistance.
I am a medical doctor and MPhil in SLP , enjoyed your video very practical and informative
Happy to hear.
Whenever I am working in my job my voice gets insanely dry where its hard to project my voice even tho I drink water alot and breath through my nose not my mouth. Could it be a weak voice? or mybe its the dry enviorment?

@@healthyvoicetips sorry only gettin bck to you know. Iv always had it, it doesnt get dry when im at home or outside but I dont really excercise my voice mybe it is weak muscles surrounding my vocal cords?
