On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 8-6-20.
We're looking at a 1957 Ford Thunderbird Convertible in Raven Black Paint. The car comes with the factory Supercharged F Code 312 CI V8 engine producing 300 HP.
The car's Owner is Ken Nagel. Ken’s had this car since 2018. He shares he really likes the looks and rarity of this car that looks “showroom” new.
If you'd like to see this car on Ken's website here is the link kennagelclassi...
ENJOY!
This 1957 Ford Thunderbird, is ABSOLUTELY one of the MOST BEAUTIFUL cars EVER built. Completely, front to back, inside and out, and under the hood: Pure Magnificence In Every Respect and Detail. Thank You Immensely and Wholeheartedly For Sharing This Gorgeous Work Of Art.
Hi John, High praise :-) My pleasure sharing with you, and you're welcome, Lou
Never met a T bird I did not love! This black beauty is amazing.
thanks again Lou
HI Bob Bob, Happy to read you enjoy this Black Bird :-) You're welcome, Lou
The factory hood scoop looks sharp, as does the turned metal dash, and the sporty, yet simplistic, round tail lights that Ford would implement later on Galaxies and Fairlanes and Falcons. I'm an old Chevy guy but hats's off to owner - a rare factory performance T - Bird and true collectable. Way to go Lou and thanks!
Hi Bruce H., Enjoy reading the details you see :-) My pleasure sharing with you, and you're welcome, Lou
hard to believe anyone is a "chevy guy "anymore gm is so lame

As a footnote I learned how to drive on my dads 57 three speed yellow thunderbird
It brings so many memories 😊
Hi Ron, Happy to read this car brings back memories :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Ok Lou, heres my story on the 57 T’Bird. A coworker of mine had a 65 Mustang. His father restored it for him when he got his Drivers License. His father also Restored Falcons and 57 T’Bird, which was his favorite car. One weekend Car Craft magazine came to Mesa AZ on their cross country tour of Cruising spots. My Co-Worker, Randall, wanted to go see what was happening but his transmission was broken. He ran a four speed in his 289 Mustang and broke a gear speed shifting it during a street race, so he called me and asked if I’d like to go with him. So he took his father’s pea green card convertible T’Bird out to Main in Mesa. We drove most of the way there, then pulled over and dropped the top. This was in December and it was pretty cold that night, so we drove along very slow in an effort to stay somewhat warm. When we stopped at 24th and Van Buren at a stop light, two hookers jumped in the car with us and Randall freaked out. We let them out a couple blocks down the road and continued on our way. When we hit Main Street, there was a van with the Car. Raft crew in it taking pictures of,.... Us! So Randal made a U-Turn giving them a full view. Well the next month and Randall’s Dad saw a Copy of Car Craft and decided to buy it, only when he read the article he couldn’t help noticing that the T’ Bird in that issue looked just like his. Luckily he didn’t make a connection and Randall didn’t get busted.
Hi Ken, That is a story! Well done, Lou
I'd like to say this is the most incredible car you've ever featured but I can't. My jaw is still on the floor. Thanks Lou!
Hi Brian SD, High praise! Good news! Ken's agreed to share all his cars, so stay tuned as they're all "jaw droppers" :-) You're welcome, Lou
What a car, what a car, what a car!!!
T-Bird fron 57 is my favorite, black is my favorite color for that car, NO heavy Continental kit...
Big power option, this one has everything
Just like I dream about it!
Thanks
Hi Pablo, High praise :-) Watch this video before bed two time, and wake up with a BIG smile from sweet dreams, Lou
This is a very very late car, built Nov 11, 1957 -- during the 1958 production year. These cars kept on being built because the 58 replacement car was not ready when it was supposed to be. They are still titled as 57 models though. (The same thing happened with the 69 Camaro, when the 70 model was not ready in time. This is why you see so many 69s.) Hence, there are more 57s around than 55 and 56. It also carries a trim deviation code, unique to 58 built cars. It carries a '6', indicating that it has a porthole top as original equipment. A solid top would have carried a '7' on the trim tag. This is truly a beautiful car.

As I could expect from Ken, not only an excellent car to add to a '50's collection, but an exceptional one with the color combo and F-code option. Ken has impeccable taste in picking out his cars. The Ford designers really nailed it on this one. Perfection from stem to stern.
Hi Joseph, "Perfection from stem to stern" Well said, Lou
Wow Lou, You don't come across one of these everyday!! Super charging was in it's infancy back then!! Nice car - thanks for presenting. Tiger.
Hi Tiger. Happy to share this rare Bird with you :-) My pleasure sharing with you, and you're welcome, Lou
Wow! This T-bird looks amazing inside & out, and definitely under the hood. It's always a treat to catch up with Mr. Nagel and another one from his collection. Thanks, Lou!
Hi TheGunfighter45acp, Happy to receive a "Wow!" from you :-) yes, Mr. Nagel's cars are quite the treat, and good news, there will be more, Lou
Gorgeous and very rare automobile Lou!Thank you both for letting us take a look at it!...
Hi Jeffrey, Happy to share this rare Bird with you :-) My pleasure sharing with you, and you're welcome, Lou
Never new this model existed . 300 hp wow. Beautiful restoration. Is that a Skyliner in the background. Priceless.
Hi Jeffrey, Happy to share this rare Bird with you :-) Good news! Ken has agreed to share all his cars with us on this Channel, so stay tuned, Lou
My 1957 Lincoln Premiere boasted 300hp, with it's large, 368cu engine...then again, that car weighed around 4600lbs, so it really NEEDED that 300hp! I once, 50 years ago, drove a friend's 56 T-bird. My lasting impression was, that the beautiful car handled a little bit sloppy, much like a larger car. But that was to be expected of cars from that era. Whatever...I would love to own this black beauty. The F code cars must be exceedingly rare--and also extremely expensive!
What a stunning piece of automotive history! I sat in one of these just once (never drove it, mind you. LOL!!), and that steering wheel, as I recall, was absolutely huge. My legs had to go around the wheel instead of just under as we all do today. Thanks Lou for sharing! This T-bird IS an amazing car!
Hi Rusty, "What a stunning piece of automotive history!" High praise & well said. You're right, the steering wheel could be a bit smaller. My pleasure sharing with you, and you're welcome, Lou
A real “superbird,” but without licence plates on the test drive, you guys could’ve been pulled over by the “state supertroopers!” With the lack
of headroom, this car would’ve been more suitable as a “ladybird.” Even more rare was the unused factory spare tire. Thanks for sharing this black beauty, Lou!
Hi Fred, Happy to share "black beauty" with you :-) You're welcome, Lou
Beautiful car...work of automotive art.
High praise for the looks of this car :-)
Another great start to a Saturday morning, Lou - a fresh cup of coffee - and another car from the Ken Nagel museum, thanks so much for sharing and as always you know "Howdy from Texas 😃"!!
HI Greg from TX, Ken's cars are a great way to start the day :-) My pleasure sharing with you, Lou
The best years for the t bird 55' - 57' , nice one Lou .
Hi steve s, Happy to read you enjoy this year & 55 & 56 too :-) Thank you for viewing & sharing, Lou
In 1964, at a quarter-mile track at which Chrysler factory representatives were demonstrating the new Hemi in time trials, I saw a 1957 F-Code T-Bird with a 411 rear end beat the Hemi by a nose. The 312 Y-block had been bored out but the cam, valve springs, etc., were factory original for the Paxton supercharger. The engine compartment was understandably cramped-and as shown in the video, the glass-bowl inline fuel filter had to mounted upside down because of the limited space.

What a real treat this old Bird is! Fabulously good looking thing!
Happy to read you enjoy this rare Bird :-)
What a beautiful T-Bird. All of this gentleman's cars have a very high idle to them, I guess he likes a higher idle!
H Clark, Happy to read you enjoy this "beautiful" car with the high idle :-) Lou
It's on fast idle because more than likely the engine is cold.
Awesome Lou! I love that supercharged 312 “Y” block, bad to the bone! And those baby birds that with that combination was nothing to take lightly or so I’ve been told before! Cool Lou! KUTGW buddy!
Hi Hensley’s Hobbies, Happy to receive an "Awesome" from you :-) Appreciate the kind words, and encouragement to keep up the good work, Lou
Lou Costabile - you are mighty welcome my friend!
Oh Lou, Bird Dog, really? Take my wife please LOL.
On to the car, I always learn something from Ken's collection. I did not know the supercharger was an option much less at the jaw-dropping price of $340. Another interesting item on the invoice was the last item for gas and 10 pts of oil at what appears to be $5.72 LOL.
There is no question that visually this car is stunning and from a performance standpoint it seems to have everything Ford could offer on a T-Bird in 1957. I have one question though, where was the air intake for the supercharger? It appeared to possibly be in the wheel well but I really couldn't tell.
I really admire Ken, he has much more restraint/maturity than me. I would be on that supercharger :-).
Another great car from Ken's fantastic collection. Thank you both for sharing this with us.
Hi Rich, When you're around cars like this, the learning is high when they are this rare. Seems the "hose" to intake air snakes behind the engine, so I'm guessing it takes it from under the car. I agree, if I had this car I'd be hauling all the time :-) My pleasure sharing, and you're welcome, Lou
Those were real dollars (gold-backed) and plenty of money, back then
Wow, Lou you keep reviewing these great cars. Ken is a lucky man to be custodian of such a wonderful fleet of classics. Please thank him for letting you document these cars, which will become a classic car history archive particularly as he and you tour around the beautiful Illinois countryside, from this fan of yours in Australia.
Hi Mike, Happy to receive a "Wow" from you :-) I've shared thanks to Ken for each and every one of his lovelies we get to see on this Channel. Good news! Ken as agreed to share all of his cars on this Channel. Stay tuned, Lou
Thanks, keep commenting… interestingly, another Country’s / Peoples /views important, etc. Actually, wish We could have visited Australia…( many Colleagues & Friends have!)….Ps, I am 76 years young, just relocated to HELENA MONTANA, end Of LIFE, around Grandchildren, Children!! Anyways…….
Got to love the Tbirds. Especially the rare birds
This is one rare Bird for sure :-) Happy to read you love this one.
Wow! Beautiful T-Bird ..In "Concours condition". One of my favorites from when I was a little boy back in the 50's..Thanks for posting Lou!
Hi Gerry, Happy to read this one is a favorite of yours :-) My pleasure sharing with you, and you're welcome, Lou
Wow F code 57 ... "not too bad" :D , this gentleman has a great american car.
Happy to receive a "Wow" from you :-)
Having owned 2 supercharged cars, this engine sounds like a jet! Although this car was before my time,. I always loved the 2 seat coupe Thunderbird.
Hi HWolfeIII, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your supercharged cars :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou

My dad rode in a brand new f code fairlane sunliner and remembered the extra gauges being mounted under the the steering column so they didn't impare your view of the rest .

The car is fantastic!!!! Very beautiful car Lou..
High praise Garage 73 :-)
What a wonderful old Thunderbird and very rare too! Mr. Nagel has such beautiful and unique and rare beauties and I am so anxious to see what he has each time Lou he has one on here. Just original through out. I really enjoyed watching this video. So much fun too on the ride along and it sounded just so powerful Lou! Thanks for sharing Lou!!
Hi Steve, Happy to share this rare Bird with you :-) Glad you're along for the ride. You're welcome, Lou
All '55-'57 Thunderbirds came with a removable hardtop. No "port hole" top for '55 though. Also, electric WS wipers were available as dealer installed option. Odd that this car doesn't have the deluxe taillights though. All '57 Ford model cars, the taillights interchange with each other.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Wow! Great looking T-bird👍
Hi Niels, Happy to read "Wow! Great looking T-bird" :-) Lou

Ford's Designers Really Worked to make the 57 THE Favorite of the 55-57's.The Front Bumper Was Really an improvement over the 55-56,W/ the"California" Style & Rear Bumper Had the Exhaust Outlets Built Right in.

Hey Lou, did you checked out the custom Thunderbird?? It was flawlessly done by the mackeys hotrod shop, it will be more appreciable if you can do a video of that car! I think that thunderbird is one of the most beautiful car in the American Motorsport!
Hey Ckryse S, I'm not familiar with it. Thanks for sharing a tip to keep my eyes open for it, Lou
Wow, what a good looking car.
High praise :-)
my uncle Ross had one of these. Ford tried to buy it from him for their private collection.. They offered him like $90k for it back in the 80's. which we all thought was a ridiculous amount. dont know what ever happened to that car. But it was a black supercharged one like this.

Hi Gmoney, You have great taste in cars :-) Lou
Lou Costabile Thank you! I’ve made my own bucket list of cars I like to own some day!
Nice ride keep doing what you doing peace I just woke up and I'm having my coffee☕
Hi Lukasz, Happy to read you're enjoying a coffee and a video :-) Nice way to start the day, Lou
Ford used that Raven Black paint code for years. My family's 67 Fairlane wagon was in Raven Black
Thanks for viewing & sharing.
Super nice 5 stars 😃
Nice :-)
The success of this generation Thunderbird almost killed off the Corvette. FoMoCo was able to produce this car because it shared many components with the bigger standard Ford. Many of these original Thunderbirds still show up regularly on Craigslist...sometimes they are still in poor condition waiting to be restored.
Hi SpockvsMcCoy, Thank you for viewing & sharing your knowledge, Lou
Great one Lou. As always thank for bringing this story
Hi Mirch Shake, Happy to share this rare Bird with you :-) My pleasure sharing, and you're welcome, Lou
This has got to be one my favorite cars I have ever seen. When you were in the car looking at the interior for some reason I kept visualizing a western gunslinger repeatedly taking out his postal twirling it on his finger and reholster . and you hear the leather snug around the gun. I don't know why.
Hi Tim, Happy to bring this pistol of a car out for a ride with you :-) Lou
Hi Lou, very nice & clean 57 Ford T-Bird “F” series. Sure sounds great with a lot of horsepower. Nice interview as always, it’s a lot more enjoyable when you are able to sit inside these classic cars & go for a cruise with the owner. It’s almost like we’re in the car too, hey nothing wrong with dreaming right? 😁🙏🏻❤️✌️💚👍🦅
Hi Gary, Happy to read you enjoy the ride portion. That really is based on time, and when I can stop by someone garage, I can usually schedule a ride vs a car show is usually a review only, with hopeful trunk & treats and an engine start, Lou
The Paxton supercharger was a dealer installed option and available for any model 1957 Ford car.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Great looking car. I am always amazed at how big these are and How little passenger room there is. The driver seat seems way too close to steering wheel.
Hi Paul M, I agree, this is a great looking car, and the steering wheel is clearly to big and makes the car difficult to steer, Lou
WOW!!! My dad always thought a 55 T-Bird was great, and the 57 can't be too far behind in that ranking. First Ford engine I've ever seen with the distributor on the wrong end of the motor, but the hood opens the wrong way to so it is a win win. I'll bet that T-bird left most everything in the dust. I can now see why everyone wanted one. Nice car :)
Hi Steel Assault, Dad's right on the 55, and with the 57, you're right that can't be far behind, and maybe even a little ahead :-) Lou
@@loucostabile Well, I am jealous of you and the driver, but as cramped as the driver looked in the driver seat. Well, I doubt I could fit in that T-bird :(
The '57 was the most refined version.
Thats one of the few classic cars I would own . They are all nice but tend to be just as expensive keep as to buy .
High praise for this car :-)
Awesome Rare American Classic! :-)
Hi Dan, Happy to share this rare Bird with you :-) Lou
Great bird-Who doesn't like a vintage bird? Lou: No masks or distancing during the pandemic? Hope you guys stay healthy...
It's a Scamdemic, not a Pandemic. Does Coronavirus exist? Yes. If you get a chance, look at the box the mask comes in. It clearly states that it does not protect you from Coronavirus. I'm not saying this to belittled anyone, it just makes me sad that the powers that be have scared people to death with this crap they are spewing out constantly. Take care and live for this day! Peace

Hi Cedric, Appreciate your kind words. Happy to share this rare Bird with you :-) Lou
The tail lights are missing the reverse light incorporated in the center of the tail lights.
And the antenna in the middle of the trunk made a nightmare when removing the hardtop
Hi Ron, Thanks for viewing and sharing what you notice, Lou
Loved the ride in the country. Have to say, my Dad, brother and I would have loved a chance to drive one of those. (Dad did have a 78 --- but it was just not the same). :)
Hi Mr. J, When I have the time at a Care Takers garage, it's fun to take a ride :-) At a car show, pretty much the review & a rev. Happy to read you enjoy this episode, Lou
I found the real Black Beauty😍

I have a 2002 Thunderbird. I will never part with this car. The color is yellow. Lou this bird is one fast bird. Handling is just devin.
Hi Francis, Sounds like you have a fun car you love :-) Nice! Lou

Thanks again Lou for showing us another beautiful car. 😀👍
Hi Ooh Gee, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) You're welcome, Lou
He mentions that the fins and tail lights are so ... but all or most of the 1957 fords had those fins and tail lights!
Hi Mike, Good point! Lou
The steering column was telescopic for easier entry into the car.
That's a good idea.
Hey Lou, is that '57 Fairlane lurking in the background one of Ken's? Just curious, maybe another story there?
Hey Joe, Here is that story :-) Enjoy! Lou czcams.com/video/PDodMfIH3JE/video.html
Thought 57 was a downturn for Detroit. 55, 56 had simpler cleaner lines and not so much needless chrome and steel. By 58 Detroit had gone over the top

Drop dead gorgeous car !! Same year as me tho its in better shape ;)
Thinking Paxton SC (sp?) like the Avanti. Nope McCollugh which was earlier and meaner looking.
Loved the 'tuxedo' bit. Suits this to a T :)
Thanks, Lou !
Hi glen, High praise for the looks of this car :-) And same year born as you is a bonus. You're welcome, and watch those commercials so I can keep sharing with you, Lou
Refreshing to see original hubcaps instead of the aftermarket reproduction 1962-63 Sport Roadster wire wheels, which so many people mistake as original options. Unlike 1955-56, the 1957 hubcaps are unique to the Thunderbird.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Very true, even the guys on the auction block at B-J say “original wire wheels” when a 55-57 comes across the block with them. The wires look nice but totally not original
@@peace.quiet.freedom6675 I am not an expert on all cars , but with the cars I am very familiar with, B/J makes countless mistakes at every auction. And then there is the shill bidding I suspect because of the bidding fiascos that go on with them.
@@peace.quiet.freedom6675 Now the 1955 and 1956 'Birds had a wire wheel over option (as did all Fords those years) that fit over the dog dish covers. The 1955 dog dish covers had red accents and the 1956 dog dish covers had white accents. These years had 15" wheels. 14" wheels were on all 1957-1966 T-Birds.
Nice T-Bird!😊
Glad you enjoy this rare Bird :-)
Beuty! Any info on the other 190? Anymore survivors or did most go to the crusher? ☹️

I always thought the Tbird showed good restraint on trim . Lots of 50s and 60s cars were over developed on chrome and signage . Tbirds might even be short a bit of trim which makes it stand out

300HP? I don't know much about cars, but that sounds like a LOT for a 1950's car! (Especially compared to 1950's British cars.)

I would give both my left and right you know what for that masterpiece!😁👍✌️
Hi Frank, Keep a hold on those things and I'll keep sharing the videos :-) Lou P.S. Watch the commercials so I can keep sharing the cars.
Lou, how many of the 196 “F” birds were made with the “right amount of pedals”? Also, don’t know if you noticed…two different Thunderbird logos used in ‘57; the ones on the nose and trunk and the newer one on the horn button.
No idea. I wouldn't think too many.
@@loucostabile My dad had one of each of the years, '55-'57. His '56 had a 3 spd/OD and was purchased new by his father-in-law (1st marriage), who was a chief surgeon. As a wealthy man, he had a factory "E" bird set up installed at the dealership when this became available in 1957...along with a HD clutch, beefed up gears, etc.
My dad bought the car when Gene bought a new '62 Jaguar XKE. Gene always regretted buying the Jag...especially when he took it to the dealer for service!

Lou not sure if this is true but I read somewhere the drum brakes were very weak, and the cowling leaked rainwater into the cabin, similar to mustangs of that era? Was the engine factory or aftermarket?
Hi Ron, Thanks for sharing your knowledge, and the factory installed engine is what makes this car so rare, Lou
Super clean car!!
