You want it cheaper? Use regular fabric dye the one in bar or powder, add to boiling water after 5 minutes tur it off and wait to cool down just a little and then apply using the sprayer 👍🏼
Perhaps a better idea to make sure more mulch gets dyed: After the 1st application is put down and left to dry for a few hours, take a rake and gently drag it all around the freshly dyed mulch so you can bring some of the underneath un-dyed mulch to the surface. Then apply your second coat. Perhaps repeat this process again and then you won't have to worry about wind blowing the top layer of mulch and revealing the underneath faded layer.
They sell a mulch glue that prevents the fading and allows you to blow off leaves without blowing mulch all over the place. Just look under the term Mulch Glue

I was just looking at that product online last week! Glad ya did a review. Might check it out since I usually get 8 yards of mulch every spring. Obviously a huge cost. This might be my answer to every other year!👍🏼
i used rubber mulch this year, after researching it. it was the way to go, no ants and the color lasts for 12 years. i have perennials so we put shingles down first as a weed block around all the plants cause the weed blocker sucks, its impossible to pull weeds out of it. plus using the rubber, your helping by recycling tires. win win win good luck oh, the initial cost was a bit more but the labor and time savings is well worth it.
Suggest buying a blend of mulch and compost. I buy something called "living mulch". It decomposes. Staying natural is the best way to go in the long run.
Fantastic...both the flower bed edging and rejuvenation of mulch. I will keep looking but now that I have seen your videos I am just sbout ready to tackle my landscaping. One thing I still lack inderstanding how much mulch to fill my flower bed thank you so much for your professionalism and sharing with us.
I've used a similar product on our pine straw mulch - extends the life of the pine straw and lasts about 4 to 5 months. It's recommended to wet down any concrete, rocks, etc. that you don't want stained prior to spraying. Well worth it especially when my pine straw expenses run around $280 +/- every 6 or 8 months.
Use a piece of cardboard attached to a rake for over spray areas and no cleanup. I use it all the time when spraying round up or products like this. Just discard the cardboard at the end!!
Whenever I lay new mulch/woodchips...even rocks, I always hit it with a coat of Thompsons water seal. Say what you want but you can't argue with success. It really does work and I've done that for 20 years.

Hi Lawn Whisperer. My black mulch is full of brown pine needles and hedge trimmings. I was dreading trying to clean it out. I think I will dye it instead. Thank you!!!!
Good stuff, thanks. Next time, just add the dye to the spray bottle with the bottle in the mulch bed. Way cool. Hey can you see the trunk flare on your little planted tree? Unfortunately one new required step of tree planting, is to first excavate root ball surface back to trees original birth grade. as great majority of new trees arrivr with trunks already too deep in rootball. Old mulch inevitably decomposes and transforms into dirt. And one never wants to artificially raise soil grade surrounding base of trees. So remember first step of applying new mulch, is first breaking out most of the old mulch.
Black mulch dye is usually just carbon black and a surfactant to help wick into the wood. Carbon black is just powdered charcoal. Surfactant is a chemical that breaks the surface tension. it is mainly known as the primary ingredient in every soap ever made since the dawn of time.
I'd drop a lillie right in the center....I believe my lillie is a pride lillie (has round 2 tone /yellow and purple blooms not curly or trumpeted). It's hearty and the blooms are huge and beautiful...

Looks good. I may have to try in the fall. I like mulching in the spring and by fall its faded. Looks like I could use this the keep the beds looking fresh later in the season.
I know nothing about gardening except for what's pleasing to my eye. I love that there's a project like this! Question: Is there a reason you chose black mulch? It seems to me that red would have given a lovely and much needed contrast to showcase the plants.
@@TheLawnWhisperer Yes, taste is objective, for certain. I don't think I ever paid attention to the color of mulch before until this spring. At a small but lovely city park where I've walked my dogs for 25 years or so, they had been mulched with red. For the first time, the commemorative benches, the brick columns spaced around the park's perimeter, the planters at the gazebo entrance, the brick wall where the flags fly majestically and many other hardscapes throughout the grounds were complemented by the color coordination of the mulch. Of course, red doesn't go with everything and it doesn't suit all tastes. Surroundings are important in determining the colors one chooses. My only question regarding yours was because the plantings were difficult to see in the black mulch. Maybe it's the picture or maybe that was the look you were going for. At any rate, I'm just glad to know there is such a product. Thanks for the vid.
Looks great, just wish I still had some mulch left in my beds from last year to do this with. My beds need fresh mulch, put in drip tubing last year and can now see the tubing lying all over
I swear this phone can read my mind. I put down mulch today. I was “thinking” why can’t it just be painted when it fades? I’ve never searched that before or said it out loud and didn’t look for anything online. Then I searched for flowerbed borders on YT, and then this pops up about painted mulch.
I feel the same. I’ve thought about stuff before, never spoke about it, never searched it. Bam there’s an ad on Facebook for the exact think I thought about… weird
How much are adding at a time? That could be doing more harm than good. If you want to keep the color just use a garden weasel and lightly cultivate it. Do it to mine 2-3 times a year.
Im only getting this because i hate seeing grass clippings in my beds after a mow. Got 25 yards worth around the house and it's impossible to stop it; even while bagging everything 😅
What if I use a ratio of elmers glue and a water mixture +along with the dye? I think that would keep the dye in place on the mulch without it leaking onto the concrete. It's time to experiment! Also, the glue/water/dye mixture would keep and hold the mulch together. That way if leaves in the fall season fell into your mulch garden you can easily blow the leaves or any debris off your pretty work with a leaf blower without your mulch patterns moving because of the glue! Also, the longevity of the dye would hold up longer because of the sealant of the glue!
So with this product, what would you suggest? I usually mulch every 2 years (Red) and add 1-2 bags on the off year just to maintain good color. Removing the old mulch takes 3-4 hours and 20 or so yard waste bags. I could probably get by with replacing every 3 years and just rejuvenating on off years with this? Thoughts? Much thanks!
Really like what you have done and very much appreciated all you went through to show this. Really like the edging, looks great. Where do you get the dye. I put down 10 to 12 new bags every year in an area about 8ft wide and 40ft long. Thanks again.
Mulch is $4 a bag… so for $20 I can get about 5 bags… if you make more than $20/hr at your job, you will save money by buying fresh mulch and saving the time spent applying this stuff, and you will avoid any possible staining of your bricks and concrete. If you have giant mulch beds clearly this is a superior choice to buying new mulch every year. For most of us I think buying the mulch is far easier.
This is meant to be a refresher to restore color and not a direct replacement for mulching. Mulch breaks down so you have to add to it often. It takes at least 25 bags of mulch to put a fresh thin layer over all of my mulch beds also, so by that theory would cost way more for me when I have to mulch vs refreshing color.
