For anybody getting a black background after rendering in place. Render in place as QuickTime and uncompressed at ARGB 8 - bit. Yes your file will be larger but it will finally be transparent background and have your mask correct.
People with black background, this is what worked for me. After duplicating original clip, render it using quicktime/DNxHR/ 444 10-bit. Next run the magic mask procedure in the color tab. After that step is complete go back to the edit tab and again, render in place using the same render settings. Hope this helps
My dad just bought me Davinci Resolve so now I can play with the magic mask. I'm so excited. Gone are the days of having to pain stakingly mask out everything I wanted to use...this is going to make things so much faster. Seeing your tutorial also gave me some inspiration to play around with different effects, so thank you.

I do want to add here though, Davinci free version and Davinci Studio are almost identical to each other. There are only 10-20 tools locked behind the paid version and they are tools that you most likely wouldn't be using anyways. The free version is truly an amazing software. The Studio version opens up those tools to you and it's only a 1 time fee of $300, unlike other editing softwares which charge you monthly. Basically by buying Davinci, you'll get some tools that can make certain projects go faster, but if you're not even doing those types of projects, no need to worry about it. My advice is to try the free version and see how you like it, then if you want to upgrade, you can, but I believe you'll get everything you need out of the free version.

Really great effect Jamie, I am afraid that my computer just comes to a crawl with the magic mask - I have found that trying to refine the selection because of the resources that it uses is frustrating as well - But hopefully the Davinci People will keep working on this and make it not so resource hungry- it really is a cool tool as you have demonstrated here. The tutorial would be good, if it wasn't called "...DaVinci Resolve 17" instead of "DaVinci Resolve 17 STUDIO"... since the magic mask isn't available in the free version...
