We’re blushing and we’re already red! Thank you for sharing our story - and Bill Darden’s affinity for naming restaurants using colors and animals! Red Lobster has certainly grown over the years - and we’re not done yet. There are lots of new and exciting things on the horizon - so we can continue to be where the world goes for seafood, now and for generations.
Oh wow it's the legit company
Hello lobster!
I have a suggestion... can you install a drive through that only sells 5 gallon buckets of cheddar bay biscuits?
About to head to red lobster in a few minutes!
Hey red lobster
Met the girl who was to be my wife for 31 years in 1987. First place we ate was Red Lobster. It moved years ago but the building is still there. I can still see the spot we parked in. I grew up where at the table we'd get something off each others plates sometimes. I did that to her. She always said it surprised her but didn't bother her. She did it too from then on lol. 31 years with that amazing soulmate. She passed unexpectedly just this Jan 3 2019. Got our memories. Wish I had her.
Side note...in 87 and eating in Red Lobster I thought they were a high class seafood place. I was used to Captain Ds so a seafood place with alcohol to drink?..Sweet :)...We both had a pina colada...me with alcohol and her without. Memories.
I'm very sorry for your loss.
My wife's and Mine first date was a Red Lobster. We both had fried Shrimp, I had coffee, she had diet coke. We talked a lot, don't remember what we said though. Proposed to her there. As of the 10th of this month, we've been married for 24 years.
For that location, don't go there anymore, service has went down hill. However the memories are forever.
Daehawk Awwwww :)
I know your pain. Lost my partner too, 10 years ago. Met someone else, moved on. Red Lobster was considered by everyone I knew back in the day to be pretty fancy. Dinner there was a treat,
I'm sorry for your loss. "it's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved before..." Greetings from the UK..
A great story young man! You both loved a life times worth.
Two things I know about Red Lobster:
1. Their cheese biscuits are amazing
2. When my mom went there as a kid and picked out a lobster that she thought was going to be her pet, she was tormented when she saw her new ‘pet’ sitting on her plate, ready to be eaten.
D Zuke mmmm tasty
@D Zuke hilarious
Lolol! Your poor mama! I was equally horrified and laughing with tears running down face...that one caught me completely off guard!
@John R Lol! No, nothing concerning an experience I had with picking out a "pet" lobster. It was her story that caught me off guard! Seriously, I never saw it coming. 😄
@D Zuke So THAT'S why you don't see boxes of kittens in front of the Chinese buffet LOL:) Sorry couldn't resist; my niece would love that joke, she always sends me memes of cats being used in Chinese food... We guys including her husband and Dad all love going to a Chinese buffet and she'll eat there but it's certainly not her favorite or first choice! Later! OL J R: )
General Mills was just a huge, diverse company"
hey man, they don't call it Specific Mills
Fair point.
Fun fact: Took the company many years to become General Mills. It wasn't too long ago that they were Colonel Mills. Now - they are raking in the dough and are certified MILLSionaires.

Chaplain Bob Walker B. Th. U mean... like most restaurants? The workers are still paid tho...
That explains why there’s an Olive Garden and a Red Lobster right next to each other in the town I live in.
Yeah I noticed that too in LA it's the same.
Same with a couple of places in Illinois
Ohio calling and validating it's that way here too.
They do that in a lot of towns!
Same here
I was a line cook at Red Lobster and I loved it there: the work, my fellow employees, my managers, and of course all the free/discounted food I got to eat.
I was a line cook there too in high school and college 99-02. Made good money, friends and enjoyed the discounted food too.
So why did you leave?
You must live in an enchanted place. Everywhere I've ever lived, restaurant jobs suck.
@@bigscarysteve I love restaurant work. I might be weird.
Red Lobster - cheddar bay biscuits; Olive Garden - bread sticks; Longhorn Steakhouse - honey oat bread. It seems that a key part of Darden's success is including great, free bread for the table.
When I was a kid in the early 80s, Red Lobster seemed like a super fancy night out.
That's because they were/are super expensive when compared to everybody else.

Hmm...
I have some new menu ideas for Red Lobster:
1. Purple Drank
2. Fried Chicken
3. Watermelon
What? I'm saying I think they'd be popular entries.
manictiger I’m white and that sounds like a fucking amazing idea 😂😂😂
My parents always tell me it's expensive! It was really surprising that it was supposedly marketed for families
Well, I found the green frog fact pretty entertaining as well.
I knew I wouldn't be alone.
Natrivv my little sister was listening in and burst out laughing by that
Love the profile pic as well 😌
@@companyman114 I like the strange facts myself. But I have to admit, I've never eaten at Red Lobster. Or Green Frog. Or Pink Pig. Though I think that would be an awesome name.
They should bring it back as "Restaurant Pepe".
i worked at two different Red Lobsters in ‘74 and ‘75 while in college. much has definitely changed since then.
it was like a “fast food sit down” restaurant. there were no desserts then because we were told if the restaurant had desserts, the customers would stay longer. the philosophy was “ get customers seated and served quickly, get them out so the next customers be seated and served quickly, get them out etc.” the closest thing to desserts was peppermint at the cashier’s stand. there was a cashier you paid on your way out.
the menu was limited in comparison to their menus today. the best i remember, the only non-seafood choices were steaks and bone-in fried chicken. instead of cheddar bay biscuits they served hush puppies. the meals came a choice of two side dishes. baked potato or french fries and the choice of coleslaw, applesauce or cottage cheese.
a half a dozen shrimp dinner cost 1.59 and a dozen was 2.59. a cup of clam chowder cost 49c. a fish sandwich with coleslaw cost 89c. they offered several specialty platters such as, the “ Mariner’s Platter, Neptune’s Platter, Shore, Combo, and Broiled Fishermen’ Platter to name a few.” Rock Lobster Tail meal cost 6.29. they sold oysters-on-the-half-shell, fried oysters, snapper, catfish, crab cakes and Shrimp Louie.
Red Lobster had a policy that it provided low cost quality food. none of the dishes cost more than 10.00 and if there came a time when a meal cost more than 10.00, it would be removed from the menu. lobster was the first over 10.00 but they can’t take it off the menu because it’s called Red Lobster. i believe that was a turning point where they had to revise their business model.
the female servers wore white and blue sailor uniforms. they were not allowed to wear dangling earrings in case a baby or toddler grabbed while they were getting them in the seat. they were allowed to clip-one or pierced with a stud type earring.
the male servers wore black pants, white shirts, black tie and a red jacket.
so definitely a lot has changed.
Oh wow! A comment like this should be pinned, to the top of the page for this video! That is a lot of early info about Red Lobster, I had never heard before.
Not segregating in late 1930s Georgia? Now that took some balls.

Or some knowledge. This is likely part of the reason the restaurant succeeded. Moral crusaders will shower companies who back up their beliefs with praise and business.
Just pointing out Olive is a color as well , “Olive Garden”
"Longhorn" is still a description and a noun lol
Daniel Cruz it’s not a color tho 😒
Olives are a food too
and garden isn't an animal 🙃
Okami no... it’s not.... a plant is “alive” but it’s not a part of the animalia family
Olive is a color. So in a way he kept the color and the noun scheme. Olive Garden.
Darden wasn't involved in the creation of Olive Garden though.
@Adam Porter
But he was working for General Mills at the time so perhaps he did suggest the name!
😂😂
I wonder if Darden owns sweet frogs? lol
it's work better if it was a vegan restaurant specializing in salads.
But I see where you're coming from!
For some inexplicable reason, I imagined the Orange Tiger being a Chinese restaurant like Panda Express.
There's the Ginger Tiger...Which yes, is chinese food.
well orange chicken is a chinese food and tigers live in asia
@John R How to use it correctly?
@John R Oh, ok. I thought you were going to literally explain how to use the word "inexplicable", lol (I'm old, so I'm slow to connecting the dots these days.) I'm part-Chinese & part-Korean (tigers are pretty rampant in the countryside there, too) & I was being a bit playful with my comment. I don't read other comments outside of this thread & mine is old, from months ago & I'm surprised that people are getting around to it more at this time. Thanks for the feedback!
@Willem DaFuckedUp There are literally numerous Chinese restaurants with the name tiger on them, because they're a culturally significant animal for Chinese people in general. OP is just pointing out the obvious.

In the 80's if you wanted to take a high school date to a nice seafood place it was Red Lobster. Where else in Iowa were ya gonna go?

I actually knew most of this! My family owned a book binding business in Orlando and we cut, collated and packaged all of Darden Restaurants menus for years. We also handled all of their employee training books. It was a great company to do business with. Always payed on time.
For once, I can say "cool story, bro" and actually mean it! 😁

That being said, they STILL need to make some changes and mostly regarding pay rates and employee care but, I still like them.
The “Animal and Color” naming scheme could be used to make various ethnic food franchises.
Gray Elephant could be Indian food
Orange Tiger could be Chinese food
Pink Pig could be Southern comfort food
Green Frog, if they kept it, could have been a healthy/vegetarian restaurant
That’s probably too diverse for one company to do, but it’s definitely fun to think about.

1:30 That's probably part of the reason his restaurant succeeded. Not only did it separate his restaurant from the crowd, ironically. It would have also earned him the loyalty of emancipation types. Who would go out of their way to support him for this. Both because they wanted to eat at a restaurant like this, and also to reward him for his good behavior.
Okay, so two things.
1) I'm confused about Darden no longer owning Red Lobster because I can still buy gift cards that allow you to eat at all Darden restaurants and I could have sworn Red Lobster was still one of them listed.
2) Darden truly has my respect since he refused to have segregated seating when he opened his first restaurant. That's just awesome!
olandir You can’t buy any gift cards from Darden restaurants themselves that include Red Lobster. However, Red Lobster will still accept old gift cards issued from when they were part of Darden. When I worked there, we were told to accept them if they said “Red Lobster” on the back. You can get the “Happy” gift cards, as they are partnered with Red Lobster, but those aren’t issued by the company.
Hailey White I can second this response cause I worked their from 2014-2017
@@hewhite2 I work there currently and we no longer accept darden cards
@@woodyjones5725 that’s the decision of management if they don’t accept the gift cards with red lobster on them. Red Lobster was always a treat as a kid. We only went on special occasions.
In late 1986 I went to work for a commercial construction contractor and for the next year I worked nights remodeling Red Lobster restaurants. They stayed open and we had to clean up each morning in time for the employees to set up for lunch. Most of the locations I worked on were in Georgia and St. Louis, with a few others outside those markets. Each job lasted about two weeks and I worked on roughly 2 dozen total. One of your clips in this video was an ad with a family eating and they were sitting in a blue vinyl booth. Part of the remodel was to replace those booths with new ones. Around the same time I remodeled a York Steak House which was another chain General Mills owned. A couple of years later I built an Olive Garden from the ground up. After the Darden Restaurants spin off I built a Red Lobster in the mid-90s. At that time they were also building a concept called China Coast, which failed pretty quickly. At the grand opening of that last Red Lobster a couple of guys from my office and I ate lunch there. The manager, who I had been working closely with for the previous couple of months getting ready for opening, came over and asked us how the food was, and handed us the check. I'm not one to expect something for nothing, but most restaurants I built comped at least my first meal, if not every meal I ever ate there. I don't think I've eaten at Red Lobster since. There food just isn't that good. I prefer Landry's and Pappadeaux's when I'm close to one, but generally eat seafood at local places on the coast and avoid the chains.
I didn't remember the "Green Frog", but did know Bill Darden started in Central Florida and that General Mills bought him out and grew the company as well as starting Olive Garden. I didn't know Darden had sold Red Lobster as I've been out of the restaurant construction business for about 15 years. I also didn't recall them inventing popcorn shrimp.
Speaking of shrimp, I just read a book about the shrimping and shrimp trawler building industry in St. Augustine, FL. The name of it is "Shrimp Boat City". The largest trawler builder by far was DESCO (Diesel Engine Sales Company). You could do a video on them that would be pretty interesting.
Interesting story. But when you mentioned _Pappadeaux,_ my mouth began to water. My God, they're amazing! Pappadeaux makes Red Lobster taste like Captain D's. 🤤
It wouldn't have cost them much to build goodwill.
Great story! I live not to far from where the Green Frog was and just north of Saint Augustine.

Red Lobster used to be a once or twice a year deal for my family. I loved watching the lobsters when I was little and my folks never had the heart to tell me they were gonna get eaten.

Yep. I was hired by Red Lobster for a new store opening in 1980. No one had ever heard of a "popcorn" shrimp, and we sold them like crazy! Another fun fact: In 1980 General Mills offered full benefits after 30 days of employment. Health insurance, life, dental and vision for something around $10 per payroll deduction. After five years of a certain % of payroll deduction you were fully vested in profit sharing.
Zeeba Neighba that’s amazing, do they do that still?
@@DynoPoV They're no longer owned by General Mills and it's now 2020. I seriously doubt hourly employees receive that level of benefits today. But Red Lobster still enjoys a very low turn over of employees!
I work in an Olive Garden that used to be one of the few Red Lobster/Olive Garden combo buildings (one on each side, not combined menus). It’s so interesting working there since they have combined the whole building into one giant Olive Garden after Darden dropped RL. They didn’t take away much of the old Red Lobster decor, we have a mix of the light Olive Garden and dark Red Lobster design and our kitchen is massive. It’s so cool to work there and feel the environmental change from one side of the restaurant to the other

In 2014 the Olive Garden nearest to where we live in Jacksonville, FL burned down. Darden moved all of that restaurant's employees to other Olive Garden, Longhorn and Red Lobster locations in the area. Although completely destroyed it has since been rebuilt.
I knew most of this. I had given up on Red Lobster. My last few trips, around the time of the sale, were very disappointing. The food was low quality and overpriced for what you got. I got a promotion this year and was looking for a restaurant to celebrate at. I was browsing places online and came to Red Lobster. Noticing the changes in the menu, we gave it a try. I was very surprised. The food was great, and a good value. It made me happy. Red Lobster was one of our go-to family sit-down meal restaurants and I hated to see it go down hill. 1999 -- dropped the "The", but still said it in the commercials czcams.com/video/Pidn2gi9nFg/video.html
2000 -- Still saying "The" in the commercial czcams.com/video/yw7SglpHFZw/video.html
2004 -- No longer saying "The" czcams.com/video/RB0cU9E_gas/video.html
I want to say I saw a 2002 commercial that didn't use "The" in the name, but I couldn't find it again. I think they finally dropped it completely around 2001. But Company Man is old enough to remember it, as am I. I actually had to double check that it officially no longer said "The" in the name.
I wish my life was so easy that all I worried about was the use of the word "the"
Growing up in the 1980's, my family went to Red Lobster like twice a month or so. I still love their food! My fav disk is the broiled fisherman platter, or Ultimate Feast! If it is not on the menu, I just ask them to make it for me. And the do every time!
That fact they coined “popcorn shrimp” is 🔥 😂
Do the rise and fall of kfc and rise again in other countries
Oblivious: use the website... homie went through all the trouble of creating a website specifically to suss out ideas for subject matter pertaining to his series of mini documentaries... It's a great tool so take advantage of it.
Especially England
Cheeki Breeki in China kfc is actually good
In china they serve frikin duck burritos
KFC in other countries just taste good
Red Lobster has been an important part of my family’s bonding over the years.
I'm sorry
Last year me and my friends were out of state for a con and we decided to go to red lobster. My first time there and there was a blackout, due to a car cash I think. Any way the entire staff was wonderful using there phone and flash light so people could see and they just handled it really well. It was incredible.
I was thrilled when Red Lobster and Olive Garden were no longer under the same ownership, that is, my view of Red Lobster was tarnished by my distaste for Olive Garden. While I haven't been lately, I have been there since they went on their own and I really did like it, something that even surprised me.
Can you do a video on the Microsoft Zune
Agreed
That’d be awesome - I 2nd that
Not just the Zune itself, but all of the mistakes, failures, and miscalculations Microsoft made under Steve Ballmer.
He does videos on companies
@@johniii8147 why does he have a video on dvd versus cd then?
How about 'The Rise and Fall of SIzzler'?
wtf is that
resting sad face ikr
Yes, sizzler!!
I agree with this vote lets make it happen.
What the hell is sizzler
I was able to visit Darren’s HQ in Orlando in college. It is a really cool campus. It looks like a modern art museum; they have several test kitchen where they make new recipes for this restaurants.
I’m from Lakeland Florida! They have since moved locations but the original building is still there. I used to pass it on my way to school everyday, ah memories.
Red Lobster is one of the largest customers for the show Deadliest Catch.
That sounds racist!
@@wkdravenna This is one I've gotta hear. How/why does that sound racist to you?

Red Robin.... Yummmmmmmm..
Oops, wrong company...
Wow, I thought this video would make me want to dine there less but honestly after learning their story I'm now a fan. Another interesting fact is that red lobster was the pub where honest john goes after selling pinocchio to the stagecoach driver in the 1940's production of Disney's pinocchio so technically Disney was first to imagine the red lobster 28 years before Bill Darden.
That newspaper article "Darden throws the Red Lobster back into the sea" had me laughing sooo hard! 😂😂😂😂
I used to get Red Robin and Red Lobster confused when I was young. Seems like such a hilarious mixup now.
This was more of a rise, fall, rise video. Also I don't see how you don't follow this up with an Olive Garden video.
Because he has his own life and can do whatever he wants.
That's why.
I thought about making it part of that series but the rise again is a little questionable, it all gets a little blurry in the last few years so I didn't want to make it seem like it was the focus of the video.
It’s been 2 days he can’t make a video every day
The first Red Lobster location sounds like a great idea. I mean away from the coastal areas there are less other chains to compete with I would guess.
I live in Lakeland and ate at the original Red Lobster in my younger days. It was located across the street from Lakeland Parker.
I rarely eat at red lobster but from the few times I did the only thing on the menu I remember are their biscuits! Absolutely blissful.
Subway was also created by a young man, and today they have the most locations out of any restaurant chain in the United States. It really is a shame that poor management has led to 1000s of Subways closing done over the last couple of years.
Hari's Hobbies Jersey Mikes was Also created by a young man!!!
Hari's Hobbies poor management, poor food.
I have a full video on the rise and fall of Subway if you are interested!
How is that a shame ? It is amazing that a "restaurant" that serves the garbage that they do had made it that big.
@@vadivugandhi2273 Pub Subs = life.
What about what happened to the Sizzler?!?!
Got one right around the corner from where I live in Los Alamitos, CA. It was there before I was even born! Too bad the Pup N Taco didn't last this long🙁
@Rob De Armas
We still have one here under the original name "Western Sizzler"
in the Southeast. Always busy.
This one made me hungry with these pics
You left out when Red Lobster decided that they said they needed to raise prices because they thought middle class people eating there was damaging their image.
Lol, red lobster good because cheap and good, I ain’t going if it’s “expensive”
"An even five"
I am glad someone else says this.
I'm glad u said it I didnt notice he said this I had to go back now that's funny
I'm actually glad you mentioned the popcorn shrimp. I've been loving it since I was 7yrs old and I'm 23 next month. Thank you, sir
“Hey, wanna get something to eat?”
“Sure. Where do you want to go?”
“How about... GrEeN FrOg?”
I have been enjoying your videos very much. good work. please keep making these.
"An even five" ????? Ha!
Congratulations on 600k ! I really love your channel , keep up the good work ! And please make a video on ups Vs FedEx
I remember going to Red Lobster back in the 1980s when I was a kid and always ordering the crab fettuccine alfredo.
When I was a teen in the 70's, Red Lobster (Marietta, GA) was my family's special night out place to go. I'm in my 60's now and it is still my favorite place to go for a special meal (especially during "All-You-Can-Eat" Shrimp time!).
I love Red Lobster! It’s my favorite chain sit down restaurant so I would be devastated if they ever went under. I have noticed the things that have changed though and I do think they have been positive improvements.
I'm curious if the increase in customers is related to a rise in general seafood sales. It's perceived as being healthier than red meat
You should consider doing a video on Cheddar's from scratch restaurants. Their food is fantastic, but they're also unknown compared to places like Red Lobster.
