In this part two of the economic episode, we welcome again Dr. Raghuram Rajan. He is the former governor of the Reserve Bank Of India and an Indian Economist. Between 2003 and 2006 he was Chief Economist and director of research at the International Monetary Fund.
In this episode, we will talk about the 2024 politics and the election season that is coming up. We will break down how religion is one of the major factors in Indian politics and how it dictates the decisions of the majority of citizens. We will also talk about the positive and negative of the current government and why we need a strong opposition.
This was an in-depth conversation about economics with none other than the former RBI Governor Dr. Raghuram Rajan. I hope you will like this knowledge-packed conversation and do not forget to share your thoughts in the comments.

What I understood from what he meant to say is that if we focus more on improving the citizen's capabilities in terms of education, ease of access to healthcare, ease of starting MSMEs, etc. then way more jobs will be developed and economy will grow at a higher rate than if we just focus subsidising enterprises for setting up manufacturing plant. Manufacturing is still the main goal (in my opinion) in terms providing mass employment but, his way of reaching that goal differs from the current government.
Please correct me if you think otherwise.

Great podcast; at one point Ranveer was ignorant by overemphasising the role of entrepreneurship but Raghuram sir corrected him saying that its only the govt. which can solve problems like malnutrition, education at a large scale. In my opinion, even social entrepreneurship can't be scaled enough to make an impact on a nationwide scale. NGOs are fine, but even if considering that they are effective, not corrupt, idealistic, they cannot enforce change at a scale that the govt can.

But where the WhatsApp university fanatics in our country ever believe what's good for our country and what is not. Whatever one-sided media feeds them, is what they take it as holy grail. If Person A has done something, then that person would've thought well for the country and done it. So let's not question person A. It's awful to see our country go down this path of complete blindsidedness. It almost feels as though an entire generation has lost the capability of cognitive thinking by the way you see certain people comment or react on reels/Twitter. It's deeply concerning how most are completely oblivious to whatever wrong is happening in our country. India is truly losing its prime years all behind foolish propoganda. Truly awful!

Dr Rahguram Ram Rajan is respected world over as a great economist. I dont know how much of a politician he is. His views I feel are utopian. We all know that open dialogue is the way forward for any democracy and for a country like India that aspires to be a first world country by 2047, but I doubt it’s going to happen. • @astuteconsult
    @astuteconsult Před 3 měsíci +7

I think Raghuram Rajan’s thinking is flawed looking at the current state of affairs in India.
He is thinking long term like a professor sitting among the elite intellectuals. Talking of focusing on high end research & design in India, etc. instead of focusing on manufacturing as an immediate solution.
My question to him is that, Are we treating services like a step child and discouraging growth there? NO
We have never discouraged IT / services sector to do research & innovation in India. They are strong enough and growing at full steam on their own. Government has not discouraged them.
On manufacturing his argument is that we are overspending through subsidies in PLI scheme for low end value addition assembling. Hence government should remove its emphasis from there.
He is not looking at the current state of the ‘quality of demography’ in India who want millions of jobs. Millions in rural agriculture sector need to move out to some other livelihood. Remember these guys are inadequately educated / skilled. They are not suitable to for high end IT sector/ R&D, etc. jobs.
The only sector which can absorb these people in short term and medium term is low skilled jobs in manufacturing. Services cannot offer them jobs (except low end ones like cleaners, watchman, etc.). Hence what does the government do in short & medium term to solve the impending crisis?
This problem of short & medium term doesn’t even come to his mind. He is in his euphoria and talking of long term growth solutions which I agree should be the ultimate goals India needs to aspire for.
He is talking like a consultant who has never worked on a shop floor, giving impractical solutions to the supervisor there.
His question on Why private investment is not happening in India? Simple answer is reform labour laws to allow ‘hire & fire’ in manufacturing. This will enable large manufacturing to shift out of china to India instead of going to Vietnam & Bangladesh. In India manufacturing wants to remain MSME scale so that they remain invisible to the inspector raj of labour department. This is where government has done nothing. Government should be focusing on removing restrictions in the labour laws. Large scale manufacturing will automatically move to India from China providing short & medium term solution for the job market for next 20 years. By then India should be ready for the phase what Raghuram Rajan is aspiring for.
We need to be practical in our approach.

    • @astuteconsult
      @astuteconsult Před 3 měsíci

@@shrishri8898 I have worked in the Textile industry at CEO & Board of Director level position in the leading Textile mills in India. I am now retired since past 4 years.
I have seen the gradual & consistent closure of large-scale units - 80 mills in Mumbai & 60 mills in Ahmedabad, and so many other cities like Kanpur, Calcutta, Coimbatore, Gwalior, Delhi, etc. This happened after the famous Dutta Samat strike in the year 1980. It happened for the simple reason that "hire & Fire" was prohibited by then Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi by amending the 'Industrial Disputes Act-1947' during Emergency in 1976.
Are you aware that even today, you cannot LAYOFF, Retrench or close an industrial unit employing more than 300 workers unless you get the permission from the Government. Which never comes.
Hence from 1980s India lost out to China in manufacturing due to these very reasons. India jumped on the band wagon of Service - IT Sector as no such stringent conditions of not allowing "Hire & Fire" apply there as they fall under "Shops & Establishment Act."
It is a pity that no one talks of this root cause of stringent labor laws. Large scale units have practically vanished from labor intensive industries. Most of them are MSME scale of operations. Large Scale units only remain in industries which have high level of automation & Robotics deploying very less labor compliment.

Decent conversation. I am from Quetta and have no intention to comment on internal Indian politics. Here to learn from a scholar and from an intelligent host. Dr Raghuram's comments about communal tensions (Manipur) having economic root causes (jobless growth, limited opportunities) resonates. Balochistan has experienced the same in the 1990s. His comment about the tendency to fetishize manufacturing at the expense of other avenues of growth is also wise. So is his emphasis on the role of government as an enabler for unleashing a society's true potential...which requires a focus on issues like child malnutrition, education and health. As someone from Quetta, it saddens me. We are so similar. But we can't benefit from each other's wisdom and shared heritage.

Great episode. Learned so much in a single podcast about economics, governance and many more issues, explained in such a simple way. I have always been a great admirer of Dr. Rajan, powerhouse of knowledge, humble and inspirational.

I think India should come to manufacturing heavily, and also work on soft skills😊

    Understanding the Apple-Foxconn Employment Ratio
Apple, with a market capitalization of $3 trillion, employs around 160,000. Foxconn, with a market value of about $50 billion, employs approximately 770,000 workers. For every employee at Apple, Foxconn employs nearly 300 people. This ratio starkly illustrates the vast difference in job creation potential between the high-tech and manufacturing sectors.
The Implications of the 1 to 300 Ratio. This discrepancy underscores the essential truth that, for developing economies like India, industries capable of employing large numbers of people are invaluable for economic development and social stability.

For manufacturing to thrive, in my opinion, some things that are required to be done are :-
    1. Skilled manpower
    2. Easy finance
    3. Less regulation on all fronts
    4. Efficient justice delivery system
    5. Corruption free environment so that there is level playing field for competition to thrive and no crony capitalism
    6. Top Universities which invest in innovation and partnership with industry
    7. Huge markets (Domestic and / or International)
    8. Good infrastructure and logistic support
    9. Tax regime that promotes and incentivizes productivity
    10. Economic environment that promotes savings and attracts investments from across the world

Exactly what we need in our country.... Every time there is political debate on social media its about religion coz its easy to gain votes. But the solution for India to grow is to focus on the fundamental development, Jobs, education, Research These are the things we need. We need to see and work on the strength we have. India is capable of producing million of services coz we have the great minds, But this will only work if it is converged in a sustainable manner, More Private sector should participate in education system coz there are so many students and competition is in every field... and to aid that Government should encourage... So its a mutual helping of both Public and Private sector... Good education= new innovation= new jobs so R&D should be encouraged
