  • We purchased a John Deere KBA 8 foot disc with hydraulic lift. We want to eventually disc the fields and plant a good pasture mix seed here at The Farmhouse. We still will need a harrow (drag) and a seed roller. One piece at a time.

    Flip that piece of metal ahead it will hold the cylinder pin in. And the turning of the disc blades don't loosen that big nut on the end it will loosen all the discs . Just get the grease in and should turn easy. It does have weld on it and painted over believe me I been farming for 60 years good luck 👍

    That disk has not been used much! It is in great shape for it's age. Measure the diameter of the disk then compare them with new ones. Gives you a good idea of how much wear. The trouble with offering advice on these videos is you usually have already fixed things by the time we see them. At a Tractor Supply type store they have ready made hoses in various lengths. You can also get the plumbing and the valve for the SCV there after market. Might save you some coin. I deal with that stuff constantly. Also they make a zerk fitting rejuvenator. Even after changing them out the old grease around the journal will still block the opening. An ice pick usually sorts it out but sometimes I have to use the rejuvenator. It is basically just a small cylinder with a hose you attach then fill the barrel with mineral oil then hit it wit a hammer. Without bearings those journals need a lot of grease. My best advice is to repack those wheel bearings annually. They get a lot hotter than you think and are the weak point in those old plows. The greatest advantage to having the wheel lift is not only transport but you can pull it out of the ground while turning. Really makes everything last longer by putting much less stress on the plow. Just trying to help!

    • @NorthernSeclusion
      @NorthernSeclusion  Před 4 lety +1

      Thank you David, I never thought of Tractor supply. The zerk fitting advice is appreciated as well. I need to figure out the wheel bearings, there is no nut on the outside like normal wheels so I need to figure out how to get to the bearing. I have not spent any time looking at it yet but it had me scratching my head when I first looked.

    Don't loosen that nut Joe cuz the whole gang will be loose. Take the zerks that dont take grease, loosen and take them off and take a nail or wire and dig out the old harden grease and on the zerk try pumping grease through it and if grease go through then put it back on the disc and then try pumping grease on the disc Sometimes if you use the disc and make a couple rounds it will break things lose. To bad you don't have a grease gun with air

    I always used my brazing tip, the smallest one... take the zerk out and heat it a little and then if grease went through put it back and heat where it goes in some... mostly to just melt old grease that is hard. Sometimes they loosen and others don't... I also have used very stiff fine wire to chase those zerk holes while the fitting is out and that will normally get it. Other wise, its remove and repair bearing ... they get awful tight and that is where heating the retainer makes a lot of difference

    for whatever this is worth (and you know how much free advice is worth ;-) ....
    It may be time to invest in a powered greaser. Pneumatic will be cheaper, but a battery operated one would be more convenient in the early stages of this.
    As long as you're able to spin the disks by hand at no-load, grease will be your friend. If one seizes, you'll have a wrench job.
    Someone has already mentioned moving the ball in the zerks with a nail. That usually works on these old-style zerks. Get the ball to move (pb blaster is your friend at this stage of the game), then hit it with a pump or 2 of grease.
    Since you have clogged/stuck zerks, take the "correction phase" slow and steady. If you start at dragging the disk 100 feet and then regreasing, eventually they should all pop loose. If not, THEN replace.
    When you do replace, make sure you get non-plastic - all-metal zerks. And, in that regard, I wouldn't recommend torch heating either kind.
    This should bounce back nicely. Oh, also, repack the wheel bearings on the unit. Most importantly, be sure that the bearing seals aren't compromised and eating dust.
    I'm betting you already know most/all of this, but good luck. This'll take a little time in the beginning, but it's gonna save you hours in the long run!!
