you are SO right about the 'state school' label being used so poorly to describe disadvantage. i knew someone who grew up in a 5 bedroom detached house in winchester (london commuter belt, very expensive house prices, really good state schools) and was counted as disadvantaged by cambridge because he went to state school. like sis that ain't it.
The vast majority of people who went from state schools to the 'elite' universities like Oxbridge came from very privileged backgrounds both in terms of class and even quite often with parents/family who went to Oxbridge.
The reason why the unis use that label is because it makes it sounds like they're letting in poorer students. The reality is different. State school students are just as privileged, if not more than many private school students I knew (ones that got into Oxbridge). I can name multiple in my year who had parents or entire families who went to Oxbridge, who ended up their too.
My school is technically a state school but because it's in such a rich area, most of the students there go abroad every holiday, they own million pound houses, they wear a totally new outfit every single day. It was so strange trying to get used to that environment as someone who's raised by immigrants, a lot of students from my school end up at oxbridge and it's weird to think that they would be counted as disadvantaged pupils.
@@idreeskhan8885 *some* state school kids are just as privileged as private school kids. We shouldn't start pretending private school kids are downtrodden lol. There are a great number of state schools in poor neighbourhoods that are genuinely awful and honestly a shocking excuse for education compared to a private school.
@@duck6100 When did I pretend they were downtrodden? You are putting words into my mouth. I simply said many and probably the vast majority of kids who get into Oxbridge from state schools usually come from very privileged backgrounds. That is my experience, that was pretty much all of them now I come to think of it. I went to a state school. I guess a fairly 'good' one, and all the people I knew who went into Oxbridge for example one of their parents had went,. or both, or even the whole family had pretty much went. Of course Oxbridge would take them in and then say 'oh look we are increasing state school numbers and therefore this is not a place where rich people as oppose to smart people go'- which ofc as I explained is bs. Many going into the elite courses like medicine came from similar background, quite often parents were doctors actually. I then since found out that Medicine is a course where it is most likely the parents are in the same profession ,followed by law. Both are also not coincidentally the most prestigious courses. It just shows how rotten and increasingly unequal society is becoming.

Your dissertation proposal sounds so interesting. I too am sick of hearing “largest number of state school pupils” when it consists largely of schools with catchment area house prices upwards of half a million pounds.

Towards the end, before GCSEs got cancelled, I was revising so much that I skipped lunchtimes every week and stayed back after school so that I was productive everyday. It can get tiring sometimes but the payoff is really worth it! Also, I am a massive Shawn Mendes fan too. I love all of his songs and I really want to see him in concert one day!
