    My first Spartan race is Saturday at this location. Very hyped after watching this video!

    Really nice work!

    Awesome race, although I was a little disappointed there was no fire jump that race. I did the sprint at Fort Bragg and they had a fire pit jump before the end. I'll be doing the Virginia Super next month.

  • @mostexcellanttheophilus6935

    I love how you plowed your way into the front. That little hill didn't slow you down 1 bit! :D

      Thanks, yeah that worked out pretty well :) It was a really good race even though I usually like to start earlier in the morning to avoid groups of people amassing before obstacles - But I admit the videos are more entertaining this way :)

    hey nice running man. great stamina. I want to do my first run. I'm 15... any suggestions?

    Epic countryside and you fucking KILLED IT! Awesome work man! How many Km/Miles was it in total?

    • @olivergerl

      Thanks! :)The location was really nice - and after so much rain this winter in California everything being so green looks beautiful. But landscape wise I think nothing can beat the championship at Lake Tahoe (e.g. czcams.com/video/K0PXCI5k8xM/video.html). If you life anywhere near you should definitely go there.I logged 8.86 miles (~14km) on this course, and after the initial 3 miles the rest was luckily fairly flat.

      Awesome! Epic work. Unfortunately not (yet) as I'm in Aus. Got my first Beast race in 2 weeks! :D

    Great race Oliver! You are a CARDIO machine, I'm doing the Sacramento Super in Nov! What's your cardio routine look like? I run and mountain bike but could use some pointers from someone like you who clearly destroyed this thing! Thanks

      Thanks, I try my best :) I'm not sure if I can give you valuable advice for your training, as I have to admit my workout is not that well coordinated. Usually I run to work twice a week (that's only 3.5 miles), and cycle the rest of the time. Then some basic workout at the gym twice and a soccer session once a week (And my wife insisting on me being well prepared for the race ;) ).In general I think it will help you a lot if you're can train some uphill running (or do squads with weights in the gym), as most people get exhausted too much when climbing the rolling hills, so they don't really recover from it. Also I would imagine that mountain biking is already a pretty effective workout, so you might already be doing the right thing :)If you want to get a preview for Sacramento have a look at my video from last year: czcams.com/video/L9lAkY2j6gM/video.html).What's really difficult at the Van Vleck Ranch is that the ground is very uneven, with lots of cracks - so if you have an early start time (and therefore the grass has not yet been trampled down, so the ground is hard to see) be careful not to twist your ankle early in the race.See you in Sacramento!

    1:02:09 LOL That happened to me too when I did the SoCal Sprint on January 29th. But my GoPro did not fall off my head when I did. Anyway, great run. This course looked rough with all those hills.

    • @olivergerl
      @olivergerl  Před 7 lety +1

      I don't mind falling from the rig, as long as I rang the bell before :)The hills did indeed seem quite endless. For about 3 miles soon after the start there was only one obstacle - and that one was the uphill sandbag carry - and nothing else except for hills. But I was lucky with the weather, as we had only around 70 degrees - unlike last year, when the same event was held at more than 100 degrees.

    • @samsonite8881
      @samsonite8881 Před 7 lety

      Whoa! More than 100 degrees! I've done a race in that kind of weather before!

    Hey! congratulations spartan! What camera did you use?

    • @olivergerl
      @olivergerl  Před 7 lety

      I'm using the GoPro Hero Session and I'm really happy with it. It's super small and lightweight, but unfortunately the battery lasts only about two hours, which is why I always have to run so fast ;)

    perfect record angle for us couch potatoes.....we were there.....xd^^

  • @randal890
    @randal890 Před 7 lety

    what gear you using?

    • @olivergerl
      @olivergerl  Před 7 lety

      I use the 'Spartan OCR Neo Grip' gloves (see comments below for more info), and the GoPro Session for recording. The rest of my gear is just normal sports gear: under armor shirt, cross running shoes, and normal (non-cotton) running trousers. If you want to know something in particular, then I can check the labels :)

  • @shotokun16
    @shotokun16 Před 7 lety

    What kind of gloves do you use?

    • @shotokun16
      @shotokun16 Před 7 lety

      ya i my hands were getting tender and drying up. The 'vertical lift' killed my grip.
      By the way, beastly pace sir! Got any stats on your course run?

    • @olivergerl
      @olivergerl  Před 7 lety +1

      Yeah, they helped me a lot on the rings (didn't have my gloves on the next day and ruined my right palm there).Thanks, regarding stats I'm quite happy with the result (even though below 2 hours would have been nice if it wasn't for the spearman). I came in 33rd in Open, and would have ranked around 66th in Comp and 133rd in Elite. But I definitely need to further improve on my uphill running speed :)

    • @olivergerl

  • @FreedMind1992

    This is too dry. I did my first sprint Sunday and I left feeling like the swamp thing hating water and mud.

    • @olivergerl
      @olivergerl  Před 6 lety

      Well, I prefer dry over too muddy ;) Which race did you do, so in Know in the future when to bring my swimsuit :)

    • @FreedMind1992
      @FreedMind1992 Před 6 lety

      Oliver Gerl agreed. The physical part was taxing but it had nothing on the mud. I was sick of mud and water at mile 2.5. About six people in my heat lost shoes and I walked half a mile back to my car barefoot because my shoes had clumps of mud which made them useless after the race.
