  • The issue of homelessness is a major problem within Cape Town and the inner-city.
An example of this, are homeless people living on the grassy area outside the the Castle of Good Hope.
It's been almost five months since Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis offered the City's full support in dealing with the unlawful occupation of the area around the historic site.
Yet, there doesn't seem to be an end in sight for the growing community of homeless people living there.
Lester Kiewit speaks to Calvyn Gilfellan, Chief Executive Officer of the Castle of Good Hope, and Cape Town Executive Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis to discuss the situation of homeless people living in the area outside of the Castle of Good Hope.
This interview originally aired on 1 November 2023.

Year after year people move into Cape Town and the DA is just expected to build every person a house, school, clinic, and infrastructure all while trying to maintain what we've got. Is this really feasible?

This is such an important conversation. Having photographed around the castle grounds, I’ve seen heroin use in front of kids which is a direct result of living rough. The moat around the castle is a human toilet in specific areas and further down the road at the end of Woodstock main road as it turns into the parade I had to stop my Uber to jump out to stop a woman being raped by a guy living rough across from the old District Six club.
I feel empathy for their circumstances. It’s hard to bear constantly on an emotional level that people live so rough in the city you love, however, two things can be true at once. I feel empathy but I also feel that there is danger to citizens who have to walk through those areas, danger to tourism which we need, danger to those living rough through drugs and abuse. It is public land and citizens should not feel unsafe in their own city. As for my background, I worked in assisted living and harm reduction with prostitutes and addicts with mental health issues in Australia.

ANC politics. They want to destroy the DA hold on the Western Cape. It's spitefulness, and also a desperate attempt of the ANC to destabilize Cape Town and the Western Cape.

No one has the right to reserve a public space for exclusive use. There are ngo's who have offered assistance but due to political meddling, this issue cannot be resolved.

The City of Cape Town is trying everything humanely possible to get people of the streets.More than any other city in South Africa. People should really go and have a look at all the good inesiatives the City have invested in.

Homelessness is not a poverty issue. The academic literature is well established. And this insistence that nobody in that situation ever made a bad decision is dishonest. Cape Talk needs radio hosts that are educated and intelligent. This guy is an embarrassment.

The DA are squarely to blame .. their anti poor policies and gentrification initiatives in the city and surrounds are a total disaster.. they have no will nor wherewithal to deal with the low cost housing backlog.. they need to GO
