    The Outer Worlds is an experience that feels less like an RPG than it is a guided First Person Shooter with world design similar to Borderlands while vaguely functioning mechanically like a bare bones fallout game. From the designers of Fallout and Fallout: New Vegas. I mean, if you are actually asking why I am comparing this game to Fallout and New Vegas then please do me a favor. Go read the wiki for Leonard Boyarski and Tim Cain so you can see what games they worked on at Interplay.

    Simple answer: the game was made by the same company that made New Vegas, not the same writers and lead designer. Employees move on.

      @@Zen-rw2fz The lead writer of Fallout New Vegas was John Gonzalez, who is no longer with Obsidian. The main writers credited besides him were Chris Avellone, Eric Fenstermaker, and Travis Stout, and none of them work for Obsidian anymore. The lead designer of Fallout New Vegas, Josh Sawyer, is still at Obsidian, but his main focus is on the Pillars of Eternity series and not Outer Worlds. My point was that anyone expecting this game to be like New Vegas might want to consider that the main people creating the two games were completely different.

      Yeah...I fear we will never again have excellent rpg's like morrowind or oblivion or fallout 3 again. The recent release of the highly anticipated cyberpunk 2077 has made this fear even more prescient in my mind. That game was our last hope.

    • @ChampionofVardenfell
      @ChampionofVardenfell Před 3 lety +32

      @@sahmuss1164 That may be true, and to be fair I haven't had a chance to play it yet so I'm only going on heresay at this point. And I'm sure they will patch it and update it for years to come, and perhaps it will eventually be good. But it seems like every new major open world rpg that gets released is progressively more broken than the last. Morrowind oblivion and fo3 were buggy, of course, but still perfectly playable and *most* of the bugs weren't game breaking, even for us plebs on xbox who can't use console commands. FoNV was horriffic. I got it at a midnight release and was so excited. I played maybe two weeks and encountered no less than 3 game breaking bugs, forcing me to reload old saves and try again. The last time that happened I lost probably 8 hours of progress and said fuck it. Never picked the game up again. This is coming from a guy who has put more than 200 hours a piece in to Morrowind, Oblivion, & Fo3. I was crushed. Same thing happened with skyrim, only the bugs were more common and more game breaking, in my personal experience. I got MAYBE 20 or 30 hours in and gave up. That was also when I noticed the trend of "dumbing down", which really rubbed me the wrong way. It made the game less immersive and less interesting. Then Fo76 happened, it was as if millions of voices cried out all at once, and then suddenly were silenced. It moved the bar of bugginess so far past what was expected, not to mention the plethora of other shady merch situations. We hoped that The Outer Worlds would bring balance to the force and show devs that you CAN in fact release a COMPLETE, NON BROKEN GAME AT LAUNCH. And for the most part it did, but it increased the trend of "dumbing down" so much it was utterly forgettable. And then we have cdpr's long awaited, much hyped masterpiece, cyberpunk 2077. Not only was it going to be a fully fledged massive open world rpg with interesting story and plot points and endless choice, it would be free of bugs and playable at launch! The developer promised us they weren't like all those other greedy studios! They had integrity! But then at launch we saw it was all false promises and lies. Making the pain doubly worse. And again, I could be wrong here. I haven't played it yet so I've only heard this stuff through the grapevine. But at this point I'm going to save my money and buy it a few months down the line after they've had the chance to fix some things.

      New standard, made in the 90s. There should be more of this. Making game development easy (streamlined workflow, stock assets, most ppl using the same engines) in a saturated market is kinda messing with creativity in favor of surface level "forced realism." More studios should be looking back to what really works and then just add levels of immersion, not strip it down for mass appeal and fill it up with shaders and and the same gun mechanics we've seen a hundred times (look how successful New Blood is with the retro FPS revival, it's cuz ppl stopped making games like that despite the love for them). It's not like every game, movie or book needs to interest *everyone*. The Thief reboot is a great example of modern gameplay tropes ruining every single aspect of gameplay from the original (like uninterrupted QT animations for every motion including stealing, oh palmed face, I believe the video I'm thinking of is from this channel). I hope BG3 keeps its roots, and I picked up Pillars of Eternity II recently.
      I think these days if a modern Fallout 1 style game were released today, people would dismiss it as an XCOM clone. Which is extra ironic because the decades old Fallout: Tactics was already a bit of a genre clone of the original 90s XCOM. I'd love to see more 3D turn based RPGs, maybe combined with RTS elements (like Myth or Homeworld but with Baldur style RPG elements like main commander characters, with multiple forms of progression for the main characters and the deployable units etc). The kind of experiments major devs used to be willing to do. BG story and main party + Myth style combat (with pause though, basically baldur with sub groups and more gore) + Homeworld/Starcraft style research development and expansion.15 year old me would piss itself, and I used to be really hard to please if a game wasn't FPS back in those days.
      Either that or a Freespace 2 tier space sim meets open world RPG, so here's hoping Starfield is fantastic. Why hasn't anyone got realtime space combat right in over 20 years (afaik)? At least there is a new Descent game that I hope is good, D3 was the most fun in arcarde 6DoF I've ever had. But nothing has touched the balance of Freespace 2 for me. I digress. I might just reinstall FS2 (so nice I bought it twice/got on gog because cdrom lost long ago). If anyone wants to recommend single player space light-sim or 6 degree of freedom Descent style game (or tell me if descent 4 any good) I'll appreciate it. I go on about those games but they nailed the *feeling* of gameplay in the 90s-early 2k. That feeling is what i also miss in fallout 1, and some other classic 90s styles and story types. The feeling of some modern gameplay seems more tech demo oriented sometimes, and less like it's there for smooth, smooth fun.

    I remember hearing so many people saying good things about this game, from internet muckrakers, to endless Reddit posts. I then tried it, and was relatively... underwhelmed with it. The guns felt too similar, the weapon mods were boring, the status ailments barely did anything, the morality was obvious, character building was uninspiring, and free form exploration was relatively pointless since seemingly every single location was tied to a quest. I could write an entire paragraph or two on just how disappointing the arsenal was.

    Even if FPS Fallout, the variety of enemies means that even with high end gear, the wrong situation can get you killed very, very quickly. Deathclaws, as an example, are always a threat due to their staggeringly high damage output even wearing Power Armor, their ability to rapidly close the gap, and their high damage resistance to all but a few power weapons, like missile launchers, the Fat Man, or the anti-mat rifle... and even then, you usually still needed special ammo. Sentry Bots also presented a huge challenge, as did NCR Heavy Gunners. The New Vegas DLCs turned that up to 11 either by setting you back to 0 forcing you to get all new gear and deal with short-term scarcity, or in the case of Lonsesome Road, just throwing an entire gauntlet of the strongest enemies in the game at you.
    Hell, even Fallout 4 makes combat shockingly dangerous at times, despite the much smoother combat mechanics making things generally easier. Enemies have a lot more power weapons, even at lower levels - a Raider camp in Lexington for example is led by a Raider with half a suit of Power Armor, a Fat Man, and an elevated position. This all in a fairly low level area where your best weapon is either the 10mm pistol or a Laser Musket... neither of which is particularly effective at range, even if you're an aim god. Super Mutant Suiciders, despite telegraphing their position through sound cues, can easily get close to you and explode you, or you may accidentally explode yourself if you hit their nuke arm. The Head Laser carried by Assaultrons fucking melts your HP bar under almost all conditions, Sentry Bots despite their mandatory downtime are now both much tougher and much more heavily armed than they used to be, Gamma Guns make the Children of Atom a *shockingly* difficult faction to engage that will utterly *melt* even high level characters if you're not watching your rads, and Deathclaws will now straight-up suplex a high level character wearing full T-51b. And if you're *not* wearing Power Armor? That suplex is now an instant kill.
    And that's Fallout 4, the game most people were hoping they could rub in Bethesda's face with a comparison to Outer Worlds.

Like all you can do with the Vicar is make him abandon who he was, or hate who he was; you can't get him to decide his path had been a good option, because it didn't fall in line with certain philosophies. Oh and the game props up quirky characters I don't care about. BUT it did have some good points sometimes; I was able to shut down the mechanics's love interest right away and I got all the xp for the whole quest line without having to tediously follow it. The Outer Worlds needed a serious, fundamental balancing pass and some significant rewrites to its story content. It's too ironic and too easy to give a single half a holler about, and it makes me really sad because it's also gorgeous to look at and plays well from a base level.

You can cheer him on to hack the terminal or simply just discuss another way out. Cheering him on actually ends up getting him killed and you lose rewards from it. Same with how you treat one character as well. If your neutral, overly nice, or an asshole you may or may not get to get an awesome power armor set plus weapon. I really had to RP that myself because the corporations didn't really do a good job of trying to buy me out. Like I thought the CORPORATE bad guys would be the path of greed. Get offered more money to do dirty deeds (morally questionable), but...shit I can't even remember what the point of siding with them was. I think it was like to "maintain stability" or some shit. My main problem with the game was how generic my character felt, like despite all my choices i felt like you could only really either play "generic corporate puppy stomper" or "heroic space rogue with a heart of gold". The perks didn't help either, with shit like cowboy or lady killer it actually felt like you were building a character not to mention some of them actually opened up rp opportunities. All the perks do in outer worlds is make you kill stuff better. And the writing was fine but didn't hold a candle to disco elyisum which was released by an unknown team with next to no hype and with a smaller budget yet easily blew it out of the water with its creativity and genuine pen and paper feel. And honestly that's my main problem with Outer Worlds, even in 5e you can present your players with a challenge or make a unique character, even in 5e the modules are better written than the Outer World's generic "woah look at this craaazy beauracracy." But most importantly the game just felt so lacking in any sort of character building compared to any other pen and paper game or rpg on the market that I just couldn't be bothered to finish it.

Only to realize that I couldn't, as I sided with the corporations I was immediately the bad guy no matter how much people I helped, even at the end my character has the option to say something like: now I'm calling the shots here, only to see that your character doesn't change anything. And that's the problem, you can't built a character and see how things play out with that character, in new Vegas you can build a character that sides with this faction or that one or none and you can make them feel different.

      I think another thing is that most people who play games are not "gamers", which isn't a bad thing by any means, but I think people who have been playing games for at least 10 years or so have been able to really see the difference in the quality of games over the years. I don't know about you, but I watch E3 and the game development videos, the interviews, etc. You can see the difference with how these companies handle their IP's towards their audience now vs then. Immersion should come from gameplay design, if you have this, more human behaviour will come from that gameplay design,! the result will be more immersion by gameplay design !
    I have been saying these things for over 7 years. It just got worse., you think it's going to be better? that is a nope when tabletop rpg's are undergoing the same sort of treatment, just try and play dungeons & dragons and cry to the sky why you can't be a unique character.

    • @AnkMyrandor
      @AnkMyrandor Před 4 lety +4

      @fenrif you are absolutely right about this, I think it started earlier though, dungeons and dragons 3.5 was released back in 2003 , I as a thick dipshit nerd, aways said I don't play 3.5 I make my characters with 3.0 and play with the 3.0 rules. my friends just let me do my thing. the reason is that most spells and feats are streamlined to cater and balance around pvp, mages are so overpowered with a 1hour/level inivis in combat. YES might be true, but they can't attack and the spell is like this for ROLEPLAY reasons. as was it in 2nd edition! where mages were even less powerfull low level, had to get more xp to level ( yes classes level up at different xp amounts ) .
      for me this was the first time I really saw what was happening, this in combination in videogames was the hype of get everything in 3d. even though baldur's gate 2 was 7 miles ahead of neverwinter nights. most people think neverwinter nights was the best game ever made, it wasn't it was pretty decent though, but now it's revered as one of the best games ever. same with dragon age. which was a mediocre game, but at least it was a roleplaying game, 2 sucked balls. but now after so many years of mediocrity these games are getting praise because they are the last of their kind ( same goes for vampire the masquerade bloodlines )
      The dilution of RPG games is one of the worst things ever done, you can also blame steam for that. categorizing everything as an RPG. people saying diablo is an RPG. no it's not let's call it what the developers called it when it came out : a hack and slash ! you hack and slash, get loot repeat ! great game. never was an RPG though, they knew it and that's why it was called that. now these games are called an Action RPG because leveling equals RPG ? no it doesn't. the line crossed for me when Payday2 was dignified with a RPG status, it's not a bad game , had a lot of fun with it, but an RPG because you roleplay as a bankrobber? you always roleplay as something/someone in a game. you always have an avatar. my standard retort to this kind of IQ-less mindsets is, if 'payday 2' is an RPG because you roleplay a bankrobber ! than 'thomas was alone' is an RPG because you ROLEPLAY a f*cking rectangle!
      I hate it that the corporate world always wants to make most of the money possible, the biggest target group is IQ less so cater to that ! what about the reason games exist? a target group with above average IQ who wanted to escape the real world because people are shit ( no other reason is needed actually ) I escaped my RL because I was severely bullied, I was 11 when I discovered D&D 2nd edition, made a lot of friends because of that, started to really like RPG's and digital games in general. always something to learn, always some problems to solve in some creative way.
      now i'm 35 and I quit role-playing about 5 years ago, I would love to have a decent role-playing group and or game to play, but even my friends fell to the mediocrity and don't remember how it was 20 years ago. I can't even bring myself to enjoy a bit of it while being with my friends, I'd rather play an old game by myself lately. I don't think BBT was the cause but a response of the dumbing down and now that was a main target group for it.
      and yes you are right, people are moving on, look at all the shooters and battle royals scooping up all the major players, which is fine, please have them. because other companies are noticing that they are losing major cash and can't keep up with these major players like fortnite, I was so happy that ubisoft might have seen the light, and is undergoing changes. because even ubisoft always makes a game that I consider : wasted potential. hopefully the potential isn't wasted now anymore, and they will cater to the group that made them big. the ones that still buy their games in their 30's and I will continue to do so for as long as I live.

Combat for instance just wasn't fun and didn't feel responsive. Hated how little response the game gives you when you get damaged so a lot of the time I would get hit by enemies and not even notice. I'm a big fan of stealth games and playing stealth builds in RPGs and thought the stealth mechanics in this just felt awful. With no truly silenced guns as a stealth build the only benefit you would get in combat would be one stealth critical on an enemy which might not even kill them. The most disappointing aspect in terms of character building for me was the perks. Most of them seemed so boring and didn't add any cool unique abilities to your character - especially compared to NV which had so many interesting perks.

The publisher of Outer Worlds "Private Division" focuses on what they call "mid-tier" games. Not exactly "AAA" budget but bigger than indie. Then again with that said maybe they shouldn't have charged $60 (I don't feel quite as burnt since I played through it using GamePass PC when it was $5 a month). But it does explain somethings. Lack of weapons, repeat of assets, not many enemy types etc. Thankfully though Microsoft has the rights now to the Outer worlds IP since they own Obsidian (Private Division did not keep the rights, Obisidian did). So, Microsoft could make another game in the Outer Worlds universe with a MUCH larger budget and longer dev time and make it an Xbox and Windows exclusive. I'd be surprised if they didn't. This game made me sleepy for some reason. I tried turning off the music, that didn't help, I would fall right to sleep around an hour in. Then I realized there are a TON of loading screens. I realized all the waiting for the game to load was boring me to sleep, along with all the weird colors, I just couldn't finish it.

      Glad I’m not the only one who thought the color palette was... off.

      i also stopped playing before beating it. Got right to the final boss and then realized I didn't care what happened to anyone in Elysium.

    The shooting appears grindy and uninteresting.

      It is. 1993 Doom's gunplay is way more fun than this.

      Jesús Molina tbh despite its simplicity the original doom still holds up pretty well more compared to a lot of modern games xD

      I'm going to make a contradictory statement. It's not grindy, but it has all the elements of grind. This is because repeating encounters isn't necessary to meet the max level, but every battle feels the same and there is little variation between fights other than whrre it is happening. Even then there is little to no verticallity, maneuverability or challenge.

    When you said something along the lines of "the second time you play and figure out siding with one side will not cause any significant change in the outcome to warrant a second playthrough". I couldn't continue without pausing and nodding very approvingly.

    Nice video man, it made me think that we all take our mortality for granted, you survived something horrific and made something beautiful, what a legend
