No offense to Arin, but why on did they think it was a great idea to hire someone who criticizes your game at every conceivable opportunity for the Ambassador role? It just makes no sense to me. Korone, despite being a newcomer to the franchise, genuinely loves Sonic.
Deeprooted conflict of interest within Sega, and probably language barrier making execs think that as long as he was talking about Sonic it was all good. 'All press is good press' type of deal.
The Sonic social team was doing a lot of self-depricating humor during that time, so Arin was the obvious pick to go with that narrative. We're lucky to have gotten past those times.
Sonic PR was in this weird phase of "Our games suck and we're in on the joke too! Haha" and they thought that it would maybe salvage the brand.
But no, people just dunk on it even more except for die hard fans.
All die hard fans I know criticize new sonic games heavily, because they love it so much they want it to be better. And it's valid criticisms as far as I can tell.

Arin came from a time when Sonic was appealing to the negative reception of the brand. They were pretty self-defeating and self-deprecating.
Having Korone as the new one, meant that the Sonic fandom outgrew its teenage phase and time to be optimistic for a change.
Most of the negativity comed from yhe western fandom, the japanese side has more fans capable of providimg critcism without being obnoxious so there is that too

The Fandom never wanted that negative face of the franchise. The internet dunked on Sonic throughout the 2010's, hyper fixating on every conceivable issue the games could have, even when games like Colors, Generations, and Sonic Mania were coming out. It was a miserable time to be a Sonic fan, and Arin being the Sonic Ambassador was probably the perfect personification of that era.
You can tell the literal turning point was the first sonic movie. The moment it was actually well received and praised for having effort being put into a polished product was the day their marketing team decided to do a 180.

Meanwhile I'm here, climbing out of a pile of late 2000's HP Pavilions, just learning that they even _had_ Brand Ambassador as a role before 2020.
Korone is a goofy little sweet potato and genuinely loves to play games. It would be be pretty difficult to find someone who would make a better ambassador for your game imo.

Arin’s era was a Black Mirror to how the Sonic brand became this self-aware character to itself. Korone is a far more suitable ambassador and even mirror: someone who can find genuine joy out of gaming, even if they humorously stumble through it.

@@zzskyninjazz1821I'd love to agree, but I think its more of a double-edged sword. Especially in the West and Europe. Seen plenty of people on the Internet, who are into anime, yet trash talk vtubers. Same goes for streamers and content creators in general.
I think a lot of people still perceive it as weird or deceptive. Completely forgetting that their favourite actors and creators are also putting on a facade and acting out a role.
But in terms of model being seen as a tool - its very versatile and useful, so I completely agree in that regard.
That's selling Korone too much. She barely had any streaming experience or technical knowhow when she started in 2019, and only joined Hololive because she was a retro gamer who was friends with one of the original members. The fact that she's managed to become a professional entertainer is purely incidental

Korone is the master of making everything fun. Thanks to her, I've been trying all the Sonic games again after like 15yrs of not touching them at all. So whatever game she plays or recommends, I just try most of them now. She even got me to enjoy Star Wars again after Disney ruined it with 789 ...but then the Acolyte managed to ruined it all again lol

The funniest thing is that Arin has said multiple times that he doesn't understand why SEGA hired him. (He has actually been less shitty about Sonic since no longer working for them. And he actually had fun with Frontiers. He tried to stay his cynical "I hate Sonic" self at the start, but after the first Titan battle, his only complaints were things literally everyone agreed were the worst parts of Frontiers)

Arin and Sonic Twitter teaming up was something for the community, but with how Arin himself presents gameplay and his honest critique of games, he's definitely no shoe in to actually help promote games.
Granted, Sega earns their poor reputation with Sonic, but it's a good idea to restrain brutal honesty and not publicly admit your pessimism of a franchise's upcoming release when you've been given a spot on their team.
Arin's personality around Sonic doesn't make him a good promoter, but his passion for critique helps speak for up for game communities.

Getting Arin Hanson to be the Sonic Ambassador is like getting Morgan Spurlock to be an ambassador of McDonalds; it's entirely self-defeating for no reason other than to cater to a demographic who'll never give your series/ products the time of day. Korone's at least energetic and passionate about the series, despite her being a new-comer and her Sonic playing skills being on the amateur side.

Haha, here's me who loves both Arin and Korone. They play opposite sorts of on-screen characters (well, Arin is rarely on-screen outside of their sub-channel) and I find them both highly entertaining.
So Sega has trouble choosing English speaking ambassadors for their game for a long time. *Looking at LAD's ambassadors.
Sonic 06 absolutely deserved that trashing from JonTron and Arin back in the day, game was broken (not in a good way) af. I do agree Arin wasn't a good fit as Sega Ambassador but at that time I'm not sure if there was anyone better though (in between him and Korone I'm sure there were some people better suited for the job like say Antdude but I'm not sure if Sega would agree with his stance on Sonic fangames and mods)
There was a time when I actually enjoyed Game Grumps. It took me some time to understand the funny, silly guy who doesn't equip a shield on Ocarina of Time is actually doing that on purpose, so he can create fake outrage and rage content. Sega also took some time to understand that Arin was trashing their franchise, and not celebrating it.
That was actually one of my favorite series Jon and Arin did, too. I was so devastated they didn't finish it.

From what I see, Arin's allowed to criticize the games however he wants, but as an Ambassador for Sonic, he wasn't a good fit. Sure, everyone shared the same opinions that he did about the games, and a lot of them were very valid ones, but that didn't really get people to go buy the latest games to enjoy them. Overall, it didn't help sell Sonic, but he was far from the main cause.
Korone, on the other hand, does seem like she genuinely enjoys the games and loves the character for what he stands for (but he's second fiddle to Knuckles, her true love). There's also the fact that she became Ambassador in 2022, when Sega had some good stuff going around for him (Sonic Frontiers, the Sonic movies, Twitter/X questions with the cast in-character, etc), so you could argue that it was unfortunate timing on Arin's part as well.
The context is definitely different but you can equalise it by considering how Arin didn't praise or highlight the few things that were good about Sonic games at the time and instead focused solely on what made them bad which everyone already knew about, whereas Korone is not unnecessarily going out of her way to find the flaws and shortcomings in the new media, because even though Frontiers, the films, etc are an improvement they're still far from perfect. When you are literally given the job of making something look good, you are really bad at that job if you can't find a single nice thing to say about the products you're supposed to be promoting. Those games were bad but they were not unmarketable.

Well, why did they hire him in the first place? I've got nothing against him OR Sonic, but if someone clearly doesn't like the (often clunky) games, why make him a representative of their franchise? Korone is obviously a much better choice.
Maybe because they didn't know at the time of hiring him. If they fire him so soon after, it'd give them bad rep.
Because he does love Sonic. Sort of..kind of. He just hates the games. And his love hate relationship is pretty funny, paradoxical and ironic. I can appreciate it for what it is.
Because the game grumps Sonic playthroughs were always legendary. They attracted angry sonic fans who ranted that Arin just didn’t “get” them and blamed him for glitching the games on purpose, even when he would just walk forward and fall through the map. Still, it was entertaining and he and Jon/Dan would still get into the lore and characters.
Eventually, the Sonic Twitter account got into it and started interacting with them and sending them free stuff. At some point you have to be aware that most people associate your games with low quality and just show some self-awareness, and I think this was the perfect opportunity.
Like he said, he legit loves sonic as a character, just that the games drive him insane. There’s enough room there to make an interesting sponsor.
It seems to be that the English-speaking social media team had the (good) idea of bantering with him and his ambivalent feelings towards Sonic to bring attention to the Sonic brand, and corporate higher ups thought (for some reason), “Hey, the social media guys are using this guy to bring attention to our brand, we should make him our official ambassador!” with seemingly no thought put into that decision whatsoever.
Apparently the social media manager was a big Game Grumps fan.
Say what you will about the modern Sonic games, but yeeting Arin Grumps, and replacing him with God Dog Korone as the brand ambassador for the Sonic franchise was one of the best things the marketing team at Sonic Team and Sega have ever done.

Agreed. To be honest even back then I watched Game grumps for the co-host Dan, his life stories and overall postivie attitude most of the time where genguienly enjoyable....but, Arin was just insufferable most of the time and his "comedy" grew old fast.
To be 100% fair, Korone called Sonic 1 a "Kusoge" (shit game) on the same stream she started being the Sonic ambassador. It was a spur of the moment thing when she died tho and immediately felt bad about it. It was hilarious 🤣
That's a good point but to keep it fair I do think insulting a game out of frustration when you die in it is different to hating all of the games repeatedly on podcasts, social media accounts, etc.

I nominate PumpkinPotion to be a Sonic Ambassador. She's played every game, has numerous Sonic tattoos, has the Sonic Crocs, can talk about the history of the franchise until the heat death of the universe, and has used art cels from the shows.
Korone is a corporate VTuber with leverage and weight to her name, from a marketing perspective it'd be beneficial to have someone like Korone be the ambassador. All respect to Pumpkin Potion but i feel like she isn't as engaging as a majority of the other vtubers (which isn't a good thing considering it seems like all vtubers are trying to compete with eachother or one up one another)
Plus she seems to derive herself off of being a "variety streamer" and mostly doing talks and storytimes

Arin Hanson has done massive damage to Sonic and video games as a whole, and we're still recovering to this day.
