The drama setting is kinda looking at only one-side of the story. To me, they are the fairy tale version of Romeo and Juliet. They love each other but happen to be born into the opposite side. Their corresponding clans are at war, and what's more, it's Jidu's clan invading Bailin's, and Jidu himself as the most powerful general actually led their clan (in first episode) and likely killed some ppl from Bailin's clan. I am not blaiming Jidu, he has his own responsibility for his own clan. But for Bailin, who is not just a regular civilian, he is the ruler of his own clan, ppl in his own clan look up to him to save them. The drama didn't expand on this side, but in the original book, there was a touching paragraph "It's the first time he lost his grace in front of his subordinates, yet they still look at him with hopeful looks. Yes, even now, even after they lose battle after battle, even though the enemy already besieged their final protection the Ruoshui River, even though they can already hear the enemy is about to launch the final campaign to destroy them, they still believe him. Their eyes are telling him 'you must have a way, you have led us tens of thousands of years, you will lead us out of this one as well'. He is holding his hands very hard so he can avoid trembling. He wish to yell 'No, I don't have any solution, I don't know what to do', but he can't, he is their only hope. And he wish he could just cry in front of the emperor God (not sure what's the translation, I didn't watch the English version) for help and guidance, but the Emperor God is nowhere to find and he knows that Emperor God believes in not interfering and let things happen. But how could he himself let things be, how could he just let them die and do nothing, he look at ppl in front of him, tried his best to speak in a clam voice 'I have a way, I will now need to leave for a little while, but I will bring back a solution, please hold your position and wait for me'. He can feel his whole body is covered by cold sweat, but he is never so determined before ...". I actually felt he is a selfless person. Had he be selfish, with his own ability and the fact he is Jidu's friend, he will survive and live comfortably even if his entire clan is annihilated. It's out of love for his own ppl, he choose to kill Jidu who he deems closest in his heart. To provide an analogy, it's as if during world war II under attack by the Nazi's and they were about to succeed. And if you can stop the war by killing one person, albeit an innocent person, you will stop the war right away and millions of civilians will be saved. By saying all of those, I am not saying Bailin is right, after all, he killed Jidu who loves him wholeheartedly. I am just saying, he is not a villain, he was put to a difficult position, whichever he chooses is wrong, either lose his Jidu or lose his clan. His life is tragedy no matter what he chooses. I have no objection to Jidu's revenge, just hope you see Bailin as a tragic figure, not an evil figure. BTW, the drama does make lots of change to the original book, added lots tedious yet despicable, and sometimes non-logical actions to Bailin just to make him look more evil, which I don't like. The Bailin in original book actually helped the main leads to get closer, never did anything to sabotage their relationship.
