Gotta appreciate the men and women who handle our garbage
When you work on them , it takes you 2 weeks and never smile them again . Your nose and sense of smiling will get use to it . I work for BFI for 10 years and enjoyed it . Good pay and benefits , good and friendly people to work with . I own my trash business now and love it .

The design and engineering that goes into these trucks is pretty neat
I was intrigued since the 80s when I was still crapping myself to sleep.
The worst ones were the ones that picked up school dumpsters, usually about 5 gallons of curdled milk came out with it.

I do trash runs at the hospital. The hospital creates lots of it including the recycling and bio hazards
you get use to it
I work for waste management and trust me... It smells horrible especially on a humid day.

The first garbage truck (the Amrep HX-450-ASL) looked half empty. I might have survived a ride in the back of that !
The second garbage truck (New Way Viper Rear Loader) had a few large "body bags" tumble out at the last moment. Perhaps these passengers were not so lucky.

I used to go to the one in St. Louis back in the 80s. Nasty place. Not like a landfill at all.

That's only if the bed has a hole in the box. Most the time you see maggots I if you have to get inside the box. They do collect mud. If there are dairys the crap gets all over. And we do clean them or spray the off. I at least try to keep it as clean as I can so they don't have to work around all that.
It does get bad is a hydraulic line or ram breaks the oil gets everywhere.
My dad used to work on these type of trucks and they were washed first in a sanitizer liquid and then brought in to be worked on.
Gross, yet still oddly satisfying.
I did learn that I would prefer to drive a parking lot sweeper truck than a trash truck!

I loved it when I used to be able to go to the dump and take anything I want. That was the 80s now no one will let you even in a dump.
I used to find rolls of copper wire, bag of pennies, aluminum cans. Etc. Could have made a living just doing that.
I remember back around 2010. Went to Dump, I was able to take away with me. 2 Power Line cables nearly full huge rolls of it. Had help from the bulldozer driver push it onto my trailer i had. I took it all to the scrap yard. was around 1,400 lbs of what scrap yard called Dirty Copper wiring. was happy that day. Was close to $800 profit there.

Yes, the good old days when at times you came back with more than you took. Now the city guys take it.
Because you can turn around and sue the dump for millions if anything bad happens to you (female).

This is nice but doesnt hit the same as going to a dump in person. Ik it sounds odd but seeing everything you begin realizing how small you actually are and it's pretty crazy

My older brother lives in Germany. Pretty sure he said everything there gets incinerated with these super incinerators that generate electricity.
That is correct. They are called Waste to Energy Facilities and we have several in the US under a company called Covanta among others. The boilers burn the waste and the steam generated from the combustion powers a turbine that creates electrical current. It's pretty cool but has some cons.

Here in Bridgeport Pa. They take it too some plant that has some type of energy sourced heat ..don't ask me how but they vaporize all the garbage into this air. I don't know how it's done elsewhere

Yes. Otherwise the truck itself will become a large pile of garbage.
