- FC Dallas and Major League Soccer are in the news for the wrong reasons following a stellar MLS is Back Tournament in Orlando. FC Dallas made the controversial decision to allow fans into the stadium despite an ongoing pandemic and then several of those fans booed their own team’s peaceful protest during the national anthem. ESPN FC’s Shaka Hislop and Herculez Gomez have their say over the controversy and what it means for sport in the United States.

Hektoer Donovan They’re not American citizens but they have the work permits and everything to be able to play professionally here. 99% of leagues around the world let players from foreign countries play for them. As a matter of fact, they pursue those players. If MLS had only USA players, the league’s quality would drop. The best players in the league aren’t American. I can only think of Chivas, the Mexican soccer team, that does that. That’s their thing. The team consists of only Mexican players, but the rest of league doesn’t do that.

How you protest is just as important as what you're protesting. Insulting the Anthem/American flag is extremely devisive. It insults millions of people and takes away the spotlight from your message. The players have the right to kneel in protest and people/fans have the right to boo for being insulted by the protest style. You want better results? Protest better in a less devisive way. The audacity they have when someone protests the way they protest. Massively hypocritical
This is not a totalitarian state. Playing the anthem is ridiculous to begin with. In International match’s, it’s understandable. But in club matches? NAH... that’s what Fascists do!!

I've been amd MLS fan since the first game in 96. That ended when they chose not to play the anthem and decided to kneel. This is the first MLS story I have seen in a month. Dear MLS, you don't respect our country? Have fun getting aling without a large portion of your fan base.

My question is why doesn’t MLS and it’s players do what the premier league did and kneel right after kickoff? Seems like a solution for both people who are against the kneeling during the anthem and players who are protesting. This clip is edited...he also stated while being interviewed that that he and his teammates 'asked' (aka 'told') stadium officials to not play the anthem. The officials of the public-owned stadium used the opportunity to remind the players that they do not own nor control public space. A rare day when athletes/divas are put in their place and reminded as to how unimportant they really are...especially this ilk. I wouldn't walk across the street to watch a soccer match even if I had a free ticket in my hand.
