I commend the immense amount of effort that went into this
the fact that we both got this in our algorithms xD
-Ashton Creech
This is THE highest quality production I’ve ever seen put into a video about actual microtonal theory, and perhaps even harmonic theory in general. THIS CHANNEL NEEDS A MILLION MORE SUBSCRIBERS
I love the metaphor of harmonies in-between bottom notes and top notes being like people that cause the personalities to mesh in an overall setting.
Does anyone else hear that the piano music in the background slowly grow more and more microtonal/alternate-tuning as the “party” continues? (ie: from traditional 12-tone to equal temperament, etc)
You have exceptionally great ears, my friend! That's exactly the reason we chose the track! Check out @MikeBattagliaMusic 's Channel, he is a xenharmonic mastermind!
That's what usually happens when you drink more and more. Nothing mysterious
Oooh i noticed it was microtonal but I didn’t notice that! So cool
This is probably the most creative video you've made so far. It was a great analogy, and you really got 31 different people to act all of this out. Plus hearing Mike Battaglia's Sweet Lorraine as the background music was a nice surprise, given that it's one of my favorite 31-EDO covers out there. I'm looking forward to what you have in the future!
Thanks so much!
Yeah, we were amazed by how our friends just trusted us with all of this haha, it was so much fun to record :D And yeah, @MikeBattagliaMusic is the real thing! Love his music so much!
I love thinking about the planning and the spreadsheets you guys must have had to make sure to film every combination of people and to make sure they act in the correct mood lmao
Thanks for getting the amount of effort that went into this haha :D
Holy moley the production value! the opening graphics at 0:30 👌👌👌👌👌
Glad you like it!! Yeah... 2 days of work right there, I'm NOT a motion graphic designer/animator hahaha
You quickly realise how much work goes into stuff like that when you have to do it yourself... I love it, because you appreciate the works of others so much more
I have to agree. You guys are genuinely multitalented, not only having mastered microtonal music, but also possessing the ability to create one hell of a spectacular audiovisual production.
Thank you so much, it's so humbling to read comments like these....
The thing I love most about the xenharmonic community on CZcams is that everybody knows each other
This is probably the best ever music theory video i've ever seen in my life
This touches multiple things at once, a video called “Chords as Emojis”, my overall OBSESSION of microtonal music that you have helped me build, and just the very creativeness you have made. You deserve every bit of my pleasure in watching this video.
This is insane! I absolutely love how each person is their own note and has their own unique “personality”. It’s incredible how much effort went into this. You guys deserve way more subs! :)
Thank you so much!! Indeed, the effort was quite gargantuan, but it's so nice to see that people are enjoying it :D
@@HearBetweenTheLines Hahah I definitely enjoyed this, and I subscribed!
Wow, this is amazing! Blows my mind where you went with this one in terms of production value, attention to detail, educational inventiveness…. Hats off, coming from a musical philistine who enjoyed every minute of it 😉👏🏽
I just listened to "Time to Call My Friend". What an astounding use of microtonality. Thanks so much for the music.
That's a really good one. Top two diesis moments of mine are when Lumatone anticipates A shat major over B flarp, and Clara's penultimate high note being a B flarp over a B otonal chord
holy moly, this was so cool and such a fun representation. And not to mention the quality made me think this channel had 50x the amount of subscribers it does. Great work
Wow, thanks for your lovely comment! Glad to have you on board :)
This is AMAZING. I have no words, this is a content about microtonality that manages to be fun, brilliant and instructive. I can barely imagine how much effort you put into this. Also, mike battaglia's sweet lorraine in the background fits perfectly, bringing more and more xenharmonic elements as the video goes on.
Proud to be like n° 1000!
Wow, thank you! I'm flustered by the response to be honest, it's beautiful to see the work pay off and, even more so, making all these people happy with the content db
10:01 the fight you get into is top tier comedy
hahaha, we had to film it multiple times because we cracked up every take :D
I'm speechless on the video quality. Congrats on the growth! You guys deserve it. If anyone reading this comment likes cool chords in 31, I recommend checking out my "What a Wonderful World" a cappella cover, entirely within 31-TET.
Let's name the d7 chord at 09:01. Since you have a chromatic cluster, you could maybe push the extensions a little farther, like Chris Bandy and Jacob Collier calling things a sharp-15, etc. How about C(db7) +11 d13 d14? That's what I did when labeling this chord in Wonderful World. Maybe some kind of label for "otonal chord" would be helpful for a harmonic series chord up to a certain point (my guess would be d13). So then you could say like "C otonal add d7" lol.
It warms my heart that you guys have a chord with a chromatic cluster 🥲
That's a great idea, naming chords with a shorthand for otonal.
When we write down ideas manually, we do it with
! for otonal and
i for utonal
(dot = the note; line = harmonic series above/below)
and then add the highest limit we use in it. So C!d13 for a 13-limit otonal chord, but a C!+11 for 11-limit and similarly for utonal chords. Doesn't work in Dorico though... -.-
@@HearBetweenTheLines why couldn’t you use exclamation points when engraving microtonal chords?
@@stephenweigel Cause i and ! don't look the same but flipped in chord symbols, or do they? If they do let's entertain the Xenharmonic Alliance with that :D
@@HearBetweenTheLines I don't know of anyone using exclamation points in microtonal chords. The only association that comes to mind is that copied scala files often use them
I know this is really old, but if the font supports it, U+00A1 INVERTED EXCLEMATION MARK (¡) is the glyph you are looking for. The aesthetics of it are somewhat different, resting below the baseline, but it should at least look better than a lowercase ‘i’ in serif fonts,
Wonderful. Great performance by all of the notes, especially Root. I appreciated their high fives with the folks they didn't get along with alone.
Incredible. Amazing. Every music student needs to see this.
This was a visual, creative and story telling masterpiece. Im also jealous to see so many musically minded and intelligent individuals in one room together. This is the party i want to be at and have missed. There is harmony in absolutely anything . As white noise is the full spectrum, we pick a few notes to harmonise inside it, but truly there are infinite possible combinations and sequences and resonances to find
What a wonderful, humbling comment, so glad you enjoyed it so much! db
i love your guys channel. the way you use analogies like this to explain complex microtonal theory is amazing
I love comments like yours. The way you use precisely the right words to make me feel better about my work is amazing.
Wow, so much effort!! You deserve WAYYYY more views on your videos, simply amazing. The editing, the writing and of course the music material. One of the greatest music videos I've seen
This not only explains harmony really REALLY well, it explains relationship dynamics in a very clear way. 10/10
wow, you guys have really upped your production value, jesus christ! lol, wonderful stuff
Absolutely adore the music sync at 3:47 , y'all are hilarious
Good catch! Hahaha, yeah, that made me so happy when I realised that it ligned up almost perfectly, just had to cut a few frames here and there to make it work :D
Wow! This must have taken you a thousand hours to make! Great ideas about how to build chord voicings in 31-EDO. The idea about how certain intervals only sound good with various "stabilizers" added is great stuff. I think everyone should study this video pretty intently - looking forward to the next one!!
I mean, we do have similar in 12TET, at least until you've emancipated all your dissonances :P. A minor second (or major 7th), for example, is much nicer as part of a major 7th chord (i.e. with the 3rd and 5th in there as "stabilisers").
31TET just has a lot more of it, I guess.
This is one of the best made videos I’ve seen on micro tonal theory. Thanks for making this.
this felt like watching a tv show in a language you're learning but don't really understand everything, only by context
Great that you watched it regardless*!
I feel like this osmotic/immersive way of learning is the best, especially if the thing you immerse yourself in is fun to be around :)
Anyway, thanks for your comment!
This is insane, did not expect to EVER see a speakeasy art deco microtonal theory demonstration???
Love this video. How much love and effort went into the details! Even all the little side stories are so on point. Can't stop watching it over and over and find more hidden clues hahaha
absolutely obsessed with your work. keep it up.
i personally would love to see more behind the scenes and teasers to your upcoming releases. you have found an amazing niche that all music nerds would love to get into and learn about. keep doing high quality productions such as this, and i know you guys will explode in the music community. we want to learn what you have to offer.
Yesss, I’ve been waiting to see this release!! So happy to finally see it 😊
Glad you like it! Share it around, I'd love for as many people as possible to see this :D
1:34 Oh my god. This is the best line ever.
This video is actually insane in how it conveys information about the topic. Not knowing much about music myself, I'm astonished at both the educational and entertainment value that can be found here.
At the start I thought you would do a fun little sketch but then the rest of the video just continued on like this, which still blows my mind. Good on ya boys!
PLEASE bring these characters back I am in love with all of them
@@HearBetweenTheLines Three weeks later I still can't get these characters out of my head lol. I need more of them.
I'm so happy you used Mike Battaglias cover of Sweet Lorrain.
I found it during lockdown and it blew me away, and it fits the mood you are going for perfectly!
This is the most brilliant representation of music theory I have ever seen.
I love how you depicted note relations as relations between people! It's so creative and informative! best microtonal channel so far. keep it up!
such a madness!
thank you very much for your video
even though i have never experienced other TET systems but yet this was fascinating!
you all guys are like a real family not only musicaly :D
This is phenomenal! Thank you so much for making this amazing video... and for putting it up for free!

Mannnnnnnnnn, I go crazy watching your videos, you are wonderful, all the examples, allegories, comparisons make me much more excited to study more and more the 31 TET. Sharing in 3,2,1...

(Note) How beautiful it would be if the videos were more frequent hahaha, but I understand and respect your time.
Thanks so much, Daniel! I'm so glad you enjoy them as much as you do! Super excited to see (and hear!) where your guitar project is taking you!
❤xentabulousssss!!!! would hate to see a 53-TET party in the next video !!
this is a brilliant video and i must save it for later
Great video. You've inspired me to explore 31 TET and microtonal music in general more.
This is so cleverly done
This is great❤ I love it! So much information yet so much fun and entertaining!
This was absolutely amazing. So we’ll written, directed, acted, edited, all of it!
So clever. And looks as if you enjoyed making thus as much as I enjoyed watching it. Great stuff.
I came back after at “least” used to 31 tet. I have to say that most of these sound very pretty.
i've recently discovered this channel through this video and honestly, what an absolute gem!
I've recently discovered this comment under this video and honestly, what an absolute gem! db db db
This was an excellent video! Subscribed!
Welcome aboard! So glad you're joining the microtonal jazzolution!
Ouch, sorry for that one, please don't unsubscribe again haha
This is very original way to show such interesting relationships between the notes
great video, so interesting how some that clash as a double stop, sound great with more notes added.
Glad you liked it! Yeah, it's great how relationships of any kind have that in common!
This is a fantastic video! Im really impressed you got 31 people together for this (university students?) and almost more impressed by the very idea to represent notes by people. Genius.
the production level is crazy!!! actually the coolest music video ive ever seen. honestly.
This is such a creative way of showing these ideas! I also love the aesthetic
Glad you like it! Yeah, we tried our best Wes Anderson approximation. Would love to experiment further with colour palletes and such, fascinating stuff!
This was really comforting to listen to in the background while I was/kinda still am feeling bummed out for almost no real reason. Thanks
Amazing video... I watched all the relationship scenes twice to fully appreciate how the emotion qualities of the sound was acted out by all the friends. Brilliant stuff!
Wow! Leaving a comment for this amazing production to get further out there in the music world!
8:14 I like to put the middle third over a dom7 (0-10-18-26) chord while approaching it from the minor third, for a nice bluesy feel.
That totally works of course and I really like that sound, too, I was just approaching it more from structural point of view (stabilising note relationships to get the most concordance)
I love how you kept the metaphor of a party going through the entire video! Really fun to watch and such great effort put into this.
This is such a fun way to think about harmonies. Though I don't know much about anything music theory related, so a lot probably went over my head.
I'm so glad you watched and enjoyed it anyway! If you do want to learn more about theory, there are great sources on CZcams, we basically learned most of it that way, too :)
8:01 made me realize you probably have hours and hours of blooper footage that is probably gold
phenomenal
This is definitely one of your best videos! Executed brilliantly and so creatively. I would hate to see what a 24-TET party would look like. Probably a bit more divided.
This is stupidly high quality production for such a small audience.
Even amongst musician I know most don't really enjoy exploring microtonality - so I must commend you for this exceptional video....
And I'll be sure to spread the word ;)
Cheers!
Awww, thanks so much for this supportive comment! Super glad to hear you liked it and especially that you're spreading it, too! db db db
incredible work
Ouff, so I can interpret your other comment as good? :D Thanks a lot in that case! ;)
this deserves more views omg
such a cool and unique video!!
This is one of the coolest videos I’ve ever seen in my entire life
This is one of the coolest comments I’ve ever seen in my entire life
Incredible
I've never been a fan of barbershop quartets, but I CAN'T WAIT to hear 31TET barbershop.
(I think that the transition from 12TET to 31TET is much harder for vocalists than any other instrument.)
Hmmm, I think it depends on the intervals whether it’s harder to sing. If there’s a lot of microtonal modulation, it definitely is harder, but the intonation itself is easier if you’re staying in diatonic logic. If you like acapella, try our song Time To Call My Friend!
Prezioso. mi è piaciuto molto !
Another one of these videos that help me seeing clearer about 31-TET theory. Thank you people! And, great vidder! (12-TET musical noobie here hehe)
Also, 3:16 is a certified musical yuri moment X)
Glad you enjoyed it! For more clarity of vision you could check out my 31-TET rendition of "I can see clearly now" haha
By the way: What's a musical yuri moment? :D
@@HearBetweenTheLines Nah, that's just a random joke I completely made...
...I basically thought of this moment as like a musical version of a yuri (lesbian) relationship. Thought that was funny ...somewhat...
Ого, какой классный ролик. Мало того, что так хорошо снято, так ещё и о 31-TET. Причём мысленно всегда так и хотелось увидеть, как одни ноты дружат с другими. Эмоции прям переданы так как надо. Очень классно!
The most creative Microchromatics video EVER
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat! You are better in each new video, congratulations. But that one? That's amazing!!!!!!!!!
I just got here but I am very impressed, and I learned something too
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!!
So is the cameraman*innen the lumatone? :P
I cannot put into words how mutch I love this, I already love the concept of personification but with microtonal music theory is just beyond amaizing ! ❤❤❤
this concept is such new to me, especially the parallelism of chords to actual social dynamics!
also this is just me nitpicking in the thumbnail, but Ab appears twice while Bb is missing
(the real Bb is between F half-flat and F half-sharp)
When I clicked on this video I thought Battaglia's Sweet Lorraine had somehow started playing in another tab lmao, since I listen to it a lot.
Anyways, this is something I've wondered about for a while. I suspected the answer was yes, but I lacked the chord vocabulary to know what chords would go with what notes. Awesome as always!
Yeah, I can't count the times I've listened to that song, still love it!

Great way of presenting this. I picked up my guitar and started listening to each interval separately. I already understood but this video made me pick up my guitar and purposefully listen. It's the whole point of an instructional video and it worked. Well done.
really guys serving drinks to minors cmon
