    Really got into reading end of the last year and this year. Was planing to read 12 books this year and I already have 7. Read 2 Asoiaf books (they are divided into 10 in Germany), Witcher 1-3, Dune and currently reading 1984. Your chanel is one of my favorite booktube ones and keeps motivating me to read 👍

    I also love an odd mix of fantasy and non-fiction astronomy/physics, I can’t wait to hear your opinion on the books you’ve mentioned!

    I’m also a fantasy reader but I do like classics too. I didn’t like Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland either. Seemed random and like the author just got high and wrote whatever came out. Sherlock Holmes is great! I liked Animal Farm. I’ll have to check that out again. It’s been since high school. There are many classics I need to read! Wasn’t a fan of A Picture of Dorian Gray. I’ll have to reread the Scarlet Letter again. Jurassic Park was an awesome book! You should read it. I haven’t read The Name of the Wind yet but it’s been recommended to me many times. I hope he finishes the series! Oh Wheel of Time! Nice. I loved it but only made it to the 4th book. I want to finish them someday. They drag a bit. I love Mistborn by Sanderson. Non-Fiction? Nice. It’s good to read broadly. I prefer to read paperbacks and am reading one now but most of my reading is with ebooks and audiobooks because I can read them on my phone whenever I have time. Cool video. I love your comical videos about readers. My kids and I think they’re great. They love reading too.

    My recommendation for the Name of the Wind is to listen to the audiobook as well. If you can listen and read at the same time. The audiobooks are amazingly done and will give you the craving to continue right away with the second book! Enjoy your reading!

    Crime and Punishment is my favorite book. I recommend reading excerpts of different translations to see if one makes more sense to you. You may have an outdated one. I like the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation but have heard good things on others like the Katz translation. The Pevear translation has a lot of notes to help with the cultural difference's. I also recommend keeping a notebook of all the names since each person has multiple names. Hope these help you get through it!
    My next book is Animal Farm, and I’ve never read it before so excited to dig into it!

    If you need some sci Fi, Definitely pick up the Jurassic Park novel! I was gifted it last year and I must say it was a real page turner. It differs ever so slightly from the movie, but was really really evocative.

    Hey Mike! Isn’t The Sun Lit Man supposed to be read after Rhythm of War and before Stormlight 5?

    • @hawkfu
      @hawkfu Před 6 měsíci +3

      Was thinking the same thing. Personally I think it spoils one of the big reveals of Rhythm of War so I'd avoid it, but the overall premise and plot are pretty cool.

    Dude I feel your pain I read Alice in Wonderland, last month (came installed on my new Ereader), and I was disappointed. The best I can say about it was that it was a well worded record of things happening. That's it that all I got. Love your Channel by the way!, subscribed after your non-reader video. My sisters always asks me to explain what I'm reading like i am an underpaid scriptwriter trying to wow a movie exec :)

      I don't think that you can fully appreciate Alice if you are not a mathematician. A lot of the things that Charles Lutwidge Dodgson wrote in Alice had to do with math and his critique of it during his time. Alice is a children's book at the surface level, but much more complex the more you dig in.

    You should NOT read Sunlit Man. It's fantastic, (to me) but it's definitely meant for you to have already read Stormlight Archive 1-4. It's still interesting but a lot of the reveals will lose their power without having read his main series.

  • @hawkfu
    @hawkfu Před 6 měsíci +1

    Nice list! I just read Name of the Wind and its sequel and thoucht they were both good and worth reading. I didnt feel any immediate need for book 3 so i think youll be ok.
    As far as science fiction goes, i think youd really like Project Hail Mary or the Martian if you havent already read them. PHM was my favorite read of last year and the science it showcases is just so dang cool.

    Honestly either way the Diary of Anne Frank is amazing when your done with it you need to get the book Anne Frank Remembered by Miep Gies it will blow your mind you won't want to put it down. You'll not regret it. Trust me. It's that good. Look at it as historic not depressive that's not what it is at all. Nobody talks about Miep's book it's all the things Anne mentions in her diary when Miep leaves it's the other side of the story it's mind blowing.

    Animal Farm is one of my favorite books of all time. Wish i owned the collector’s edition tho 😔
    But If you’re interested in more Russian history fiction books, my friend recommended to me a book called Darkness at Noon which i think is a good pairing with Animal Farm (tho they’re pretty disimilar if compared)

    Mike, you're entering the slog part of the Wheel of Time. Personally those books don't bother me because I like the character development. Books 11 & 12 are some of the best in the series so if you can just get through 8-10 you'll be good.

    Nice to see Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawking. I almost finished Cosmos, got Pale Blue dot as well which I plan to read right after I finish Cosmos and Demon Haunted World which is to arrive in mid april to early may. Pretty excited for that one!

    I really enjoyed Crime and Punishment (Pronounced Dos-toy-yev-ski btw) and I think once I accepted that it's going to be a little clunky because its in translation and tried to imagine the scenes as the author intended, then I began to appreciate the story as a whole and the message the author was trying to convey. Which I believe was sort of a snapshot of the social and philosophic climate of Russia in the late 1800s
    Edit: Also, have you read anything by Neil Degrass Tyson? He was heavily influenced by Carl Sagan and is an excellent science communicator. My favorite book of his, which is co-authored by two others, is Welcome to the Universe. Its a slow build up to more complex subjects that are easily digestible for the laymen/ astronomy enthusiasts.

    • @miketravelsnowhere6557

      Thank you for letting me know the correct pronunciation. I need to get some books written by Neil Degrass Tyson, but I have been waiting until I finish my other science/astronomy books. I will add Welcome to the Universe to my list of books to be on the lookout for. :)

  • @bjwaters

    I remember reading some of those classics in high school as well. I remember liking Animal Farm, Anne Frank, and Red Badge of Courage, but I hated The Scarlet Letter, as I found it to be dreadfully boring. Maybe my teenage mind wanted more action or story progression, I don't know.
    Andromeda Strain is a great read, kind of a scientific thriller with a bit of a political angle.
    While I think it's admirable that you have such specific goals, I don't know if I could do that, as I tend to be a pretty moody reader, jumping between a handful of books based on how I'm feeling. That being said, I think reading more than 10 books a year puts you into the top 5% of people, as folks just don't read as much anymore. 😄

Seriously the depth and style are not to be found anywhere else. You won't be disappointed. Each book just keeps getting better and better. And all of it sheds light on the previous ones.
