    The bats outta the bag! Monster High was released EARLY in Canada and I got my claws on the ghouls for you - but what are your thoughts regarding all their controversies? Many people are disappointed in the polypropylene hair and the fact they’re missing certain accessories. How do you feel about the new body types? I discuss my opinion more in the video ofc but I actually really like that they made different body types, something I hope they do in the future is create different hand molds with different poses!

      I have been a huge fan of Monster High ever since it started as a brand. I honestly like the g1 molds because it was more for the gothic aesthetic at the time, let's say like skeletons but the new g3 molds are fine. Honestly, my problem is not the molds but rather the clothes and accessories, I had expectations that they would be more risky in that regard but honestly, for me... It looks like the g2 as if they patched them up or improved their quality a bit, I expected it to be more promising than the g1 and g2 had given us (like the current goth fashion/egirl stuff). Just as others thought, the price is a bit abusive for what it presents us. Yes, they are decent but not for $38.
      The worst of all is that not even the Booriginal Creeproductions have arrived in my country, so I doubt that these new dolls will arrive. In that case MAYBE I'll buy Draculaura but in general... them for me, they do not attract much attention, although for children I think it would be fine, I say... what matters to them is to play with them and that they like it (depending on the perspective and opinion of each child, obviously) and I feel that these dolls will be more resistant unlike the ones we've had 12 years ago and it wouldn't be such a problem if they breaks a leg, arm or accessory.

    My only problem is clawdeen. She just doesn’t feel like the clawdeen we all know and love. She doesn’t give off the sassy feminist diva vibe, she just feels like a nerd. which was supposed to be Frankie’s gimmick. I would like the new clawdeen as a separate character but not replacing our beloved diva clawdeen.
    Edit: forgot about reboot lagoona and yeah I really dislike that reboot too

      @@visiogenics ofcourse she is not. If she would be a feminist here she wouldn't be dating with the new ex of her friend xd. But maybe they aren't friends there. However, it bothers me anyways because it will still be two girls fighting and roasting each other (wich you can see in the trailer) for a men. That's like prehistoric 🥴 and as a worker in the world of audiovisuals i definetly wouldn't put that storyline in a childs movie (just if they end learning about why that behaviour isn't okey and how to answer to that conflict in other way).

      Could have pulled a MLP.. but still wanted to milk mh of any sort of nostalgia it had left. Make new characters that people can enjoy! To me it's like they needed another doll line that can compete with MGA line and decided to bring MH back from the dead but in a childish and cutesy way.. Especially with MGA lol big girl dolls and the new release of the og big girl dolls that are more bolder, and more fashionable Mattel is going to get chewed up and spit out with this.

      Honestly that's a great idea. Since they're removing the "child of" part, it'd make sense to show off what a new generation of students at Monster High looks like, plus making more unique monster fusions. This new Frankie could've easily been made by the original, a cool Greek-Egyptian monster for Cleo and Deuce- all sorts of options that could cater to a new generation of kids, plus would be fun for fans of the original.

    Draculaura is cute that she's short. I don't mind the body type. The thing that keeps me from liking them the most is the ears and how they stick out funny, especially on Frankie. @suicideluv Před rokem +19

      I don't mind representation in MH, but it's the bastardification of the old designs and characters that we know and love that does it in for me, Draculaura is a vegetarian vampire, wouldn't it make more sense for her to be thin? (I'm fat myself and this seemed like the weirdest change to me) And making Frankie nonbinary (whilst making more sense) is a weird choice imo, It feels like corporate pandering at it's finest (The trailer talks about about nothing except for Frankie's gender, no hint of personality in sight), I would embrace this change with open arms if they created new diverse characters, aside from the attached agenda, it reeks of laziness, a reboot sounds like the perfect opporturnity to introduce new students, so why couldn't they have done that instead of dissecting existing and beloved designs? In conclusion, Mattel's attempt at diversity turns into yet another "how do you do fellow kids? we promise we're woke!" situation.. sigh.

    Also, their characters are so different from previous generations that they should have just made them new characters. I'm not really in love with Frankie's new face but I wish they'd given them the side shave that's in all the box art. But MH's greatest sin is: WHERE'S GHOULIA?

  • @maddieclarke258
    @maddieclarke258 Před rokem +46

    I love having more diverse body types but my only concern when it comes to fashion dolls is that it limits the ability to exchange clothes between dolls. I think this was most seen in Barbie who’s entire purpose was to be a dress up doll. Standard and petite Barbie’s can fit curvy doll clothes but the curvy dolls can’t use a lot of the standard size clothing (new or collected from past dolls). So the curvy dolls end up with a very limited wardrobe compared to their counterparts

    I'm definitely neutral about the dolls. While i do love cutesy things, I would have saved these designs for a whole different series. Not every kid likes bright colors and stuff and the "sanitizing" of MH doesn't work.
    Really these changes can be attributed to critical adults more than what kids would want though. Idk it's more of an issue with toy companies in general and not this reboot.

    • @DarkAngel63725267
      @DarkAngel63725267 Před rokem +12

      You've got quite a good point here. Making massive requests to change the looks of popular dolls and cartoons has become an internet trend. But it mostly comes from adults.
      I remember being a kid and listening to some parents complaining about Barbie's body shape. In retrospective, yes, it is hypersexualized, but my friends and I hadn't even noticed and, moreover, we didn't care. To us, it was just a doll. We couldn't understand why adults were making such a turmoil only because of a doll. The same thing happened with Max Steel receiving criticism for being too masculine.
      While it doesn't bother me, I really don't think it was necessary to change MH's that much. They're non-human characters, why should they have realistic human bodies? I've never encountered any little kid complaining about their body shape or colours.
      The worst thing toy companies can do to explain a drop in sales is blaming the "unappropriated" looks of their dolls instead of not being competitive enough and not having a good marketing campaign. Also, kids tend to get bored of things they take for granted. MH's have already been out there for too many years. The hype is over and it won't come back until there's a younger generation that finds them appealing. MLP was a boom in the nineties, then disappeared, but then came back two decades later. Franchises and trends come and go several times: disco balls, friendship bracelets, hair feathers, boy bands, hair glitter, hippie tees, fantasy coloured hair, and so on.

    As someone who used to stock the toy department at a walmart, we absolutely did not have the room or time to find all of a not-yet-released item spread across multiple pallets and bin them as overstock until it was ready. Half the time they didn't even tell us until we couldn't find the spot our scanners were telling us to put them because it wasn't supposed to exist yet. Plus we were expected to unbox, shelve, throw out our cardboard and move on to another department within 2-3 hours with sometimes up to five pallets to sort through, and only 8 hours total to do like 3 departments a night. I'm never surprised when items end up on shelves early, the system is a MESS.
    Edit: Also as a nonbinary person, I understand they probably found it simpler and/or didn't do that much research, but honestly it would have been an easier transition on the fans and company if Frankie used she/they or both she/her and they/them pronouns, as many fem presenting nonbinary folk do. The problem is they weren’t made with the same art style in mind. Which is why they look so weird and awkward next to each other. Is not the bodies but their face and eye drawing. I was a HUGE fan of the original doll line, to the point where I’d feel comfortable calling myself an influencer. (For example, one of the animators for Boo York contacted me noting that they had added Jinafire x Heath dancing together because I had written a long essay on why I specifically enjoyed the pairing, as well as Mattel sending me the Love In Scaris set because I was the biggest Garrochelle fan on Instagram and had been rallying the fandom for a Garrot doll for years.) I lived and breathed Monster High back in its prime. This.. Doesn’t feel the same. It’s not BAD (other than Toralei’s long hair, but that’s “personal preference” or whatever) but it does feel like Mattel’s answer to Rainbow High. The edges are rounded, the colors are softer, and it has lost some of it’s soul in doing so. Just look at the pets for example. Neptuna doesn’t even have teeth! It’s a bummer to me, an adult fan who would’ve LOVED to see MH back in its full glory, but I’d imagine a lot more kids will like this because it’s so round and played safely. Personally, I’m reserving judgement until some of my favorite characters are affected. Rochelle, Jinafire, Toralei (who’s.. Fine, save for the long hair), Garrot, Nefera, etc. etc. We only have six characters to go on, I need a bigger focus group before I can judge entirely.

    I grew up with so many monster high dolls! I didn’t even know they were rebooting them until I saw them in store. Personally, I really love all of their new designs. I’m honestly just happy my favorite toy line is finally getting a come back because Mattel could’ve easily half assed this whole thing but I really think they wanted to do it justice since it’s so beloved. I do agree though that Clawdeen just seems like a completely different character. She went from such a leader and fierce protector of her friends to kind of just a boring, more palatable nerdy girl. But overall, I’ve really loved all the new designs and I’m kinda hoping they add more dolls to this new gen!

  • @gilree29
    @gilree29 Před rokem +10

    First off, I'm happy to see that Monster High brought back the large variety of articulation that made them so popular with doll customizers. If nothing else, these dolls will offer a much larger variety of builds for those who are using them to make OAKK dolls.
    As for the characters being used as their intended characters.... I think it's a mixed bag. LOVE the new Cleo design though I do wish that there were more layers to her like the others you showed off. New Franky is alright, though I really wish they kept them green instead of making them mint green and kept the bolts, though I do think the leg is an interesting touch.
    Draculara is clearly meant to be more full figured than the other characters. Her face, at least based on the illustration and the doll we saw in the pictures you showed, is definitely plumper than that of the other dolls. Pushing terms like normal or chubby aside, I'd say they definitely went for a pear shaped body for her. I'm mostly indifferent towards this change at this point to be honest though I will say that personally I would have preferred it be Clawdeen who got this body morph (something I will go into below). I think understand why they chose Draculara for this change though. Compared to the other dolls in this group she doesn't appear to have much 'going on' with her mold, outside of maybe pointed ears? That beings said, I'm not a super fan of her outfit. I don't know what it is but it just doesn't do it for me. I'm sure they'll come out with ones for her I like more later down the line but this one is a doll I would I pass on simply due to style preferences.
    I hate new Clawdeen. I hate her so much. I hate her character. I hate her design. I don't know why they took a character who was so amazingly independent and fierce and turned her into this hipster nerd. Well, I do, but I really wish they hadn't. I think a rebooted Clawdeen could have had some REAL potential as a LGBT Plus sized icon. If they had actually taken the pear shape of the Draculara doll and made it heavier, while keeping with Clawdeen's original personality it would have been amazing representation for those with heavier bodies, showing them that a character didn't need to be a stick thin runway model to be a fashion icon. They could have openly confirm the fact she's LGBT by having her crush on another girl and just done... so much with her.... instead they went for this cutesty, freckled thing that I can't even call Clawdeen, made all the worse by all the potential they tossed away in favor of this...

    You know what I’ve realized with these “bigger” doll body types. They think they can just give us dolls with bigger thighs and butts and call it a day. None of these dolls are even remotely plus size, all they got were bigger thighs. Also, I’m all for people criticizing art and being able to say you don’t like something, but you have to be respectful. Simply saying you don’t like the box art is not the issue, it’s the way people are being so vile while saying this. I will be open and say I’m not excited for g3, they missed a lot of opportunities trying to make some quick nostalgia cash and try to beat mga (which at this point, mga has the lead in terms of dolls). I’m just disappointed in Mattel because they were on the right track with made to move bodies and actual plus size dolls. We need more of that, not this. People don’t typically like there childhood toys/movies/characters changed. As we’ve all learned this year with these remakes of everything coming out. The outfit without the coat for her new doll is super cute so I will definitely get her this time.
    Draculaura's pear shape body is super cute, too! I think she looks overall really good.
    Cleo, while I miss her trademark face, still looks amazing and I appreciate the darker skin of her new doll.
    Frankie's doll worried me for a moment, but you alleviated my fear with the removal of their vest. In the photos, it looked like they had a short neck (like when your Barbie lost her head as a kid and your parent glued it back to the stump...) but it looks like the collar just was a little high. They look great!
    Laguna looks like a blend of her old doll, Gigi Grant, and Rochelle Goyle, but Rochelle was one of my favorite dolls from the old line, as was Gigi, so no complaints here! Laguna was actually the first doll that got me interested in the MH line in the first place.
    I am pleased with the new line. It seems to walk a perfect line between the original dolls and the revamp that killed it in the first place. There are a few things I'm really sad we don't have (frankie's neck bolts, cleo's cool eyeliner, draculaura's streaked hair) but other things I really love (cleo's thick thighs for one. really glad to see dolls that have my body type for once as rainbow high shoulders were too big. also watzits new design, clawdeen's new face sculpt, and tbh so much more I can't list cuz I'd make this comment too long). I'm really excited to get them when they officially come out (even then small town walmarts take like 5 months to get new dolls in). Cleo might be my favorite this generation, idk what it is about her that I like so much? It was always Draculaura but smthn about her hair really set me off, and I think I just am able to enjoy other characters and not cling to all time favorites like I used too. Really hope we get other dolls in this new style :) would love to see someone like Rochelle or Sarah Screams translated into doll (from their old design that is. Idk if they're in the new movie or series but I lost interest after all the drama surrounding it cuz I knew if I looked into it I'd want to talk to ppl about it, so I kinda just left it).

    The thing about these dolls is, I think they’re gorgeous, but they don’t feel like the original monster high characters if that makes any sense? I’m not the most well versed but I feel like some of the design changes in some dolls (like color schemes and whatnot) rub me the wrong way. To me I would’ve loved to see new characters made or at least keep some of the old color schemes and design elements. It’s just the vibe I don’t like, I think the molds are stunning and I love the inclusivity, but I can sympathize with the nostalgia on the opposing side even if I don’t 100% agree

    Honestly the whole offense with Coffins is dumb. Like not many people are even put into coffins when they die, they are mostly cremated since most people can’t really afford coffins and gravestones.

  • @Cinnamonrolls_adventures

    I love them having different heights and body types. I'm upset about the cheap hair and not having a stand, brush or diary come with the ghouls. That was an iconic part of the original dolls. Maybe in the future they will. Love you Clawdeena9!

    I love the new Cleo! (except her shoes sorry!) I love how she's like a natural gold (as a brown person she is almost my shade which makes me so so happy) and not metal gold as I was so scared she'd be like Robecca lmao. Nothing beats the G1 designs and when you explained the colours it all made sense. I loved Clawdeen when you braided her tbh that made her look great! The bodies are fabulous as well no complaining on that (idek nefra was this tall lmao). Frankie was ok! I am not a fan of this much colour pop in both Clawdeen and Frankie tbh but understandable as this is G3 now even if I wanted a bit more darker inclination. The accessories are amazing as well! I will be missing the diaries now tho TT.

    As soon as in-hand photos of the dolls started circulating, I was all in. I love the new body types and I personally think Draculaura is gorgeous. The box doesn’t really matter to me and the art grew on me after a while. It’s cute. I wish older fans would stop expecting everything to go back to how it was for Gen 1. Skullector dolls are too hard to get hands on and wayyy too expensive, so $25USD for these I’ll be just fine with, although I really wish they came with stands. And clawdeen looks sooo much better with the braids you styled her in.

    3:45 Draculaura's body isn't plus size rep, but the different bodies overall do create more diversity in the dolls. The original dolls are cute and all but they all had the same super thin body, having varying bodies is a much better move for a line of kids' toys. I feel like it helps to further embody Monster High's whole message of embracing differences and diversity.

  • @Troubled_waters
    @Troubled_waters Před rokem +14

    I actually think the new bodies are super cute- my only issue is that her body change didn’t actually feel like it was done for positivity purposes =\
    Being 90’s super-model thin was popular during the OG release. Now it’s popular to have thick thighs and a skinny waist, so that’s what the dolls bodies look like. If it was about body positivity, there would be dolls with a little tummy pudge and wider arms etc 🖤🥺

    • @Cbitsr
      @Cbitsr Před rokem +2

      @anna.owo. Před rokem +2

      She doesn't have slightly wider arms from the other dolls i think. I do agree they used to be skinny because it was in style but now we do gave more body types, not only the popular ones. I don't believe we can have very realistic bodies in dolls, i do like soft bellies, stretch marks etc but doesn't translate good in plastic.

    • @potatoperson7853
      @potatoperson7853 Před rokem +1

      @@anna.owo. What? Draculauras body type is realistic now. She has my exact body type; a short girl with a healthy weight who just happens to have thicker thighs. I have never seen a doll with my body type and I'm so sick of everyone in the Monster High community telling me that my body type doesn't exist.

They might find more cohesion as more collections come out.

  • @draganh
    @draganh Před rokem +7

    I’m definitely intrigued. Although I don’t think that anything could ever live up to the first dolls, these look fun! Pleasantly surprised by the different body molds, even if they’re still very similar to one another. Still on the fence as to whether or not I’m gonna buy any of them but if I did I would get Cleo and/or Dracula. Frankie and Clawdeen seem so bizarrely off? Idk something ab their faces is a little bit unnerving. Almost like the molds are too flat or the plastic is starting to melt. Or is that a me problem?
    Overall I am very excited. I remember how I felt when monster high first appeared and I’m so happy that the next generation of kids gets to experience that too.
    I am however disappointed in the community’s response. To see everyone get so worked up about how big each of the ghouls hips are, is sad and embarrassing. Be unique. Be yourself. Be a monster. Did we all forget that now that it’s no longer on the boxes or something? It is absolutely indicative of a larger problem with human society and communication as a whole but that’s a whole other wormhole.

    like every other generation of monster high, i love how they are exploring different art styles via body types, colors, and designs! i even loved the previous gen and their adorable anime-esque faces! did it have the same vibe as the original monster high? no, but i dont think that excitement and anticipation can be recreated. the skullector dolls are the closest thing we have to reliving that nostalgic anticipation, but theyre not accessible to everyone bc of their price range and exclusivity which is a bummer :(
    as for this new generation, i adore it!!!!!! the new ideas theyre presenting even in the character's stories is so fascinating and inspiring as if they too age and change like we do. its like seeing your favorite singer move from the music industry to the makeup industry--you still love them and support them for what theyre doing in the present but still appreciate and hold onto the music they made in the past which you love.
    just talking about monster high in 2022 gets me so excited!!!!!!! im so ready for the movie and im SO STOKED for the dolls to drop!!!! im snagging draculaura as FAST as i can! im obsessed with her and have been since i first saw her at my local target in the early 2010s. the fact that she has almost the same thighs as me makes my heart melt,,, i could honestly gush about her all day LOL. a plus size vampy kween!!!!!!!!! i didnt know i needed it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I really like the the braids in clawdeen that you made (I’m assuming you made them cuz in the box, she had loose hair). It fits her very well and gives representation for certain hairstyles. I prefer those braids, even if they might not come out or you can’t unbraid them for a doll that comes with them. It fits her better than the loose hair

    I love the dolls so much!!! I feel like people are forgettin the context we have now isn't the same as in 2016. Yes the dolls look cuter now but i feel like they look still nice and still have a nostalgic look to them somehow. After years of them being dead silent i'm just glad to see my ghouls back, no matter the cosmetic and superficial changes, since as long as they make young children feel seen and not so alone like they did to many of us, i really don't mind the changes too much 💞💞
    I also prefer the no diaries as long as we get a cohesive story in the cartoon and we get to see the ghouls' life

    • @Cbitsr
      @Cbitsr Před rokem +1

      Yeah as much as I loooved diving into the diaries, that’s definitely something that made continuity messy.
      Plus, since these dolls have a wider age-range, most younger kids may not want to read them (some gen1 kids didn’t, so smart move on Mattel).

    The issue I think will be that it was mostly collectors and kids that bought the old dolls. By excluding collectors from the narrative or not having them in mind you're missing a whole sales demographic. I'm personally going to watch the show and see what I think. The dolls are hit or miss for me. I don't love them or hate them but I definitely feel Mattel is forgetting that collectors do collect toys from within stores and not just off Mattel Creations. When I first got the dolls I did play with them but I also collected them. As I got older I would collect them. I now collect them and other dolls. Dolls like rainbow high and shadow high clearly are well made. They kept in mind that collectors will be buying these items as well. I feel like Monster High should do the same. They should at least include a stand and make the dolls high quality. One of the reasons kids and collectors alike loved the old dolls was because of the great quality the old Monster High dolls possessed. Kids are not dumb and they can tell when someone is amazing. Shoving bright colors in their face doesn't make them want it more. (Maybe if they're very young it does) but that will wear off fast. I feel if this new wave wants to last like the old one did then they have to really step it up. Take whar work with the old dolls but also create something new and fun for the new gen. That is my take on it.

I’ve heard rumors about it and people saying they’re going to be making a live action movie just like the new Monster High, but I don’t know if it’s true. I hope there’s a chance since I loved EAH just as much as I loved MH! I still have all of my dolls, and I have yet to get Spring Unsprung Kitty Cheshire.

    I have to admit that at first it was hard for me to envision them being different because I loved them so much as they originally were. However, I think after seeing them, that they are all really cute and I am a firm believer in diversity and in all shapes/sizes/sexualities being represented. If they are not, then the dolls are not showcasing how different we all really are. To me, if one particular doll appeals to you more, then buy those dolls only. If you like them all, then buy what you can. I plan to see which ones I can even find in my small town and go from there. I don't collect all Monster High dolls to begin with, but I am interested to see them in person. I plan to buy new and old dolls of Monster High and just enjoy having them at all. It's good that Mattel is being thoughtful of diversity :)
