The A-80 is very good example what quality can be reached with a tight budget approach. For its time it had all features (including a usable MC input) one might want from a integrated amplifier in a very shelve friendly format. It has power enough to drive most speakers to rather a-social levels as long as they are not low impedance ones. To get a amplifier that is noticable better you have to reach way deeper into you pocket.
Never power on and then power off so fast an electronic device -not a vintage unit like this. The power supply circuit will say you thanks when avoiding that, my friend!
If I remember correctly, this amplifier has two fuses to protect the speakers, one per channel, check them, if it is blown, check that it does not have dc voltage at the ends before replacing it
only with headphones? It's strange because the headphone output shares the same amplifier as the speakers, try other headphones, maybe your headphone cable is open at some point.

The input sensitivity on all inputs is the same, except Phono of course, so you can connect any line output (cd, tuner, tape, dat, LD, Md, etc) to the input of your preference, basically name them to have An order, and be easy your selection, auxiliary (aux) is also found as Line.
I don't know what you're doing, system "A" is for the left and right set and if you need an extra pair of speakers, you can use system "B", on some amps you can use "A" or "B" or "A+B" "Your choice, others don't, you have to listen to "A" or all four speakers "A+B".

Only had the left of a and b hooked up. Nothing on the right.

I have one great amp but listening through phones there's a distinct hum especially with quiet music earthing problems?

Beauty of an amp, I have everything to compare it to. It sounds best of 5 stacks.
Oh yes, I have to run a+b to get stereo, use the negative of A and the + on B. This should give you left and right function on balance knob.
