Shane was born with a neuromuscular disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy that requires him to use an electric wheelchair. He is the author of several award-winning books, the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah just graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. Her future aspirations include attending graduate school and owning a goat sanctuary. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog.
Shane and Hannah have been dating for 4+ years and living together in Minneapolis for 2 years. On June 15th, 2019 they got engaged!!!! Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

Doctor call the insurance company to request a "Peer Review' . The insurance company will schedule the Peer Review with your doctor. Your doctor is the best advocate for you. Nine times out of ten...this works.

Being able to get out of the house in an emergency is a great platform for arguing why you absolutely need this and why your insurance should cover it if they try and deny you.

Kelly Forester i doubt it. I’m exhausted from being in a relationship with a “normal guy” that is 28 years old and doesn’t take care of anything and has such an attitude. I would gladly take care of someone that actually needed it as long as they made me happy with chemistry at least similar to what they have.

Having a son with SMA like Shane I can totally appreciate the fact that just even being able to go grocery shopping or throw in the laundry or get your own drink is actually massive (my sons only 8 but these videos give me so much hope for his independence when he’s older given that we’re already here at this point). Also from an economic standpoint it’s probably actually cheaper over all to get these types of things out to people as the cost of PSWs/ Nurses etc is so expensive (unless you’re lucky enough to have a “Hanna” and two really able and supportive families, most people don’t) costs become quite reduced for every extra bit of independence that they can get...
It really shows how loving and thoughtful every thing is!

Hannah, I love seeing you automatically reach over to steady Shane's head when you turn. My husband is blind in his right eye and, after 30 years of marriage, I automatically give warnings of uneven pavement, curbs and steps. I don't even think about it. You two are blessed to have one another.
My best friends blinds and little things like that when we are walking sighted guide just come normally. At first it was weird but it’s at a point when I’m just like oh heads up we are going to go on a little slope and just keep talking

The JACO arm is amazing!!! I caregive for my cousin that has duchenne muscular dystrophy it took him a while during the trial to figure it out but the controls go on his chair and he now is a master at it and it helps him with soooo much! He loves it!

I Myself have a Disability and I actually used this arm myself! it was really cool and I could even pick up a cup. This type of arm would really help people with muscle weakness and other physical limitations. It's really awesome

The fact that Shane was able to pick up how to use that arm so fast is just amazing! I know that I would never be able to learn something so fast. YES! If you get denied it would be an honor to overwhelm their office with hundreds of thousands of letters ro the point where they would approve you just to stop the letters.....but.....I know you wouldn't want to spend the wait time just to prove to them by letters how absurd it was to deny you (even though it would likely help other SMA patients to not be denied) or maybe that thought would be giving the insurance company way too much credit.....but if you did a go fund me, I have no doubt you would have your arm (or the money to purchase one) in literal days. So, don't worry.....IF you are denied.....your people will make sure you get something that would change your life so drastically.....I ASSURE you.....

I think Shanes hair makes him look older-and Shane has such a following, we all would stand behind him and help in anyway-I say any money the insurance does not cover, create a go fund me-----whether someone can give 1.00 or 20.00 or whatever, it will help. Watching Shane use that arm with success and going home with out one is so sad----I know even if you had the money he probably would not have came home with one today lol but at the same time, it was so exciting to see the possibilities and how successful he was with the arm and now he may not get one or have to wait years is angering and frustrating to see. I can imagine how you both feel.

I think it is great that everyone is willing to pitch in so Shane can get a robot if his insurance company denies him. Go Fund me is great - but it doesn't address the problems with our for-profit health insurance system in our country. In addition to donating to GoFundMe, write to your Senators and Congresspeople about our need for universal healthcare coverage.

I absolutely love how caring Hannah is for Shane, as it seems to come so naturally to her. For example, she constantly helps his head stay upright (while driving) by holding him when they go around corners. I love that it's no effort or thought, it's just something she does for Shane involuntary! You guys always make my day, when I see that you've posted. I absolutely love your STORY ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

If he shakes someone’s hand that has covid, and doesn’t sanitize, the arm could become a carrier and infect other people - and if he uses it to touch something that comes in contact with himself or Hannah, it could infect them selves....

Honestly, you really motivated me. I am an electrical engineering student but I've always been interested into medicine, and seeing how technology + medicine can help people in the ways we can't even imagine is just amazing. I hope Shane is going to get that robo arm. I also hope in the future it won't be as pricey and be even more flexible.

It actually brought tears to my eyes that those scumbag companies would dare to deny someone like Shane a tool that would dramatically improve his quality of life. There are THOUSANDS of people who are in need of this technology. Sure Shane could post a gofundme, but what about the people who don't have access to the same amount of support like Shane? I was a special education teacher (recently left after two years, hoping to study education policy to improve special education and disability access in public schools) and one of my favorite things to learn about and utilize in my classroom was assistive tech. I’m currently ranting to my boyfriend about how cool this arm is. I am now VERY emotionally invested in y’all getting this arm. Sending all the positive robot vibes your way!!

This is AMAZING!! As someone with a physical disability myself (although not nearly as severe as SMA), being able to be as independent as possible is HUGE. I'm praying, sending good vibes, doing a happy dance, and anything else that could help you get this literally life changing piece of equipment!!

I'm not sure about anywhere else but NY State has a program called TRAID through the NYS Justice Center where people with disabilities can borrow different adaptive equipment temporarily or try them out to see if they work for them before making a big purchase
