    Looks like another channel with stellar quality content, and a subscriber count that will be skyrocketing shortly! Great stuff!
    I loved Doom 3. Played it on pc the day it came out. At that particular time, Far Cry, Half-Life, and Doom 3 really had my attention, mainly because of the incredible engine advancements from all three, and the potential there in.
    Doom 3 blew me away, and still provides a lot of entertainment in the form of a modded version on my laptop. I’ve got the “extra-spice” mod, which makes all shell casings, textures, and models, permanent within the level, as well as modifying sound files for guns and monsters. Highly recommended.

    The design choice to not let you use a gun and flashlight at the same time was very effective at causing tension. It's a shame they caved and undid Doom 3's major game mechanic in this version. There's actually a lot of stuff I don't like about the BFG Edition. To me it feels like they cheapened the experience. Everything seems brighter, you never run out of ammo because it feels like there's twice as much, they changed some character models but didn't redo the prerendered stuff to match, and they even made the intro text crawl way less impactful for unknown reasons. On the other hand some people don't want to play OG Doom 3 and enjoy this version more and that's ok with me as long as they have fun.
    Great video btw. You're going to go far my dude!

      They certainly tried to 'Doom' it up a bit more with this release, but I'd guess they felt pressured to do so!

    Oddly enough I actually prefer Doom 3 over the originals and newer titles because of its differences. I love the oppressive atmosphere, how it borrowed a lot of Half-Life elements (the introduction is pretty much the same as in Half-Life where you arrive from a transport and the facility is experiencing issues. Then everything goes wrong, but instead of aliens it’s demons. If you charge up the BFG too long it explodes like the Tau Cannon, and there’s random people hiding who will either follow you before inevitably dying or stay in that spot like the Half-Life scientists do), the slower paced gameplay, and how people have more realistic reactions to seeing literal demons manifest in reality. Sure, it definitely has its issues like the horror elements not actually being scary, the gunplay could’ve used a few tweaks, and they could’ve made the enemies a bit smarter. I still enjoyed it despite the game’s flaws. I also would’ve preferred them to make a sequel that builds on the foundations of this game by doubling down on what worked, reworking/scrapping what didn’t, and having quality of life improvements, and making the “horror elements” (aside from jump scares and being terrifying when you really think about what living in that setting would entail it’s not that scary. FEAR is a great example of the game that’s pretty scary. In fact, I’d want a game that’s a perfect marriage between FEAR and Doom 3).

      Well aware that the current version of Doom is the right direction for the brand. I’m just saying that I’m a weirdo who would’ve preferred them to made Doom 3 2 electric boogaloo.

    • @THHDReviews
      @THHDReviews  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Yeah, the current direction is definitely what they need to move forward without issues, but the whole atmosphere of 3 was amazing.
      As much as a sequel to this game woulda been great, it just wouldn't be embraced the way it deserves!

    • @shreksnow1918

      Yeah. Apparently, there’s a game called Retched that’s inspired by Doom 3. From what they’ve made so far it seems interesting. Although, it’s not complete yet. Once it has more content and goes on sale I’ll check it out.
      Also, there’s this really cool mod for Doom 3 called Doom 3 Phobos that expands upon various things that worked with the original and tells a different story. Unfortunately, I haven’t played it. Definitely need to.

    I played Doom 3 back on the original Xbox. Was a blast.I loved the atmosphere, the tension and all the audio and emails really made the story complete. Still have my old og Xbox and the og Doom 3 stored in a save place. BFG edition... I don't know... I miss the online coop in this version. I do like the newer Doom games but they lack story and atmosphere like Doom 3. Its just arena shooting ripping and tearing demons to bits.

    I played doom 3 in PC back in 2006, with my first pc as a kid and I loved it. I remember the screenshots from some magazines and I was shocked, even it has an spectacular Xbox original version, with an exclusive online coop. Lucky original Xbox players... One of my favourites games of all time. The bfg version, for me, it sucks. You don't need the flashlight all the time because the lights effects were different in the original version and you can see enemies because their eyes, fireball, etc. And that's only happened sometimes. Usually you can see it "perfectly" not like an enemy in a call of duty, but it's cool for exactly that. The problem is not a lot of games have do that and people don't understand the mechanic. The moment when you hear something and you see a shadow and a figure with brilliant two (or four) eyes you take a shit right there. There is only a little segment of 4 or 5 min around the end of the game before the caverns, when you are in complete darkness and it's done in purpose. Is like critic other games because you can only carry two weapons or something like that (just an example). The original game was designed around that mechanic. I recently played it again, the Xbox classic version, and oh boy... I think when I turn an old grandpa I still be playing it sometimes.

      It's amazing what they managed to port to the Xbox, and did it well!
      The torch is a great part of the game, and given the change in technology it was pretty fresh to be able to use lighting this well.

    The BFG edition was made much easier with many more ammo pickups, and a lot of the game was made much brighter. A lot of people complain about the shoulder mounted flashlight, but that doesn't really bother me as much because it's just another version of the ducktape mod. It was made more accessible to more people by being easier, so I guess that's good. They also removed all the chests in the console versions because of it interfering with achievements. I guess it doesn't matter for those who don't care about such things. I will also add that you can't skip cutscenes in the bfg edition, which isn't a problem on a first playthrough but is really annoying on repeat playthroughs.

      @@THHDReviews Ah yes, the obsession with fast-paced gameplay... I don't think this would have worked well in 2004, though - this was the era of Half-Life and all games were judged in accordance to it. Plus, Classic Doom had endured years of criticism for being a "mindless shooter with no story" (a notion I disagree with).
      So, a Doom 3 too similar to the Classics would have likely been rosted by the crtiics as a "step backwards" and "refusal to change". Oh yes, it would have been loved by the community, but barely gain any fans outside of it. And this is one important thing Doom 3 accomplished in 2004 - it brought in a lot of much-needed fresh blood, at a time when the community was visibly stagnating. Many of these newcomers went on to discover and fall in love with the Classic Dooms as well :)

    I never understood when people complain about not being able to change weapons during reload. Like, how would that even work? Doom 3 went for a whole tone of realism, it's not an arcade shooter. How would switching weapons during reload work? Does he have an extra set of arms he uses to reload one weapon while shooting with another? I love this game to the max and one reason for it is exactly that it steers a mile clear from inane bullshit like we see in Doom Eternal.

    • @THHDReviews
      @THHDReviews  Před 5 měsíci +1

      It's more the lack of responsiveness I'd say, like being able to interrupt that, but still needing to reload when you change back would be better.
      It's a fairly minor thing, but could have made it a bit tighter.
      I tend to hate it when games automatically reload when simply changing weapons!

It is understandable how limited Xbox was for this game, but I still find it a fun experience and so far only Enpro 2 was the worst designed stage in the game. BFG edition certainly could do much better on X360.
      What's interesting I learned just recently that BFG edition supposed to have VR support. This is probably why it implemented more stationary imps and simplified level design. Hell had some platforming segments, but now you can just walk like a Furret. Maybe I'm wrong, but either way the game sucks.

    Of the lot... Doom 3 is my personal favourite. Despite their focus on guns-a-blazin' action, the series prior always had a horror element in the enemy designs and lore aspects (it was inspired by the Action-Horror film Aliens after all), and with the newer games and their death metal/power fantasy style, it's easy to forget that the series was well on its way to embracing the darker side in the mid-late 1990s with the PSX port and Doom 64. Doom 3 is that full embrace, and I can never understand why people keep hating on it so much, with some of the most intense combat and atmosphere I've ever experienced.
    Hell (pun intended), I own the game in three forms (Vanilla/Dhewm3 source port, BFG Edition, and Xbox Classic) and I have no regrets about it whatsoever. In fact, there's no "wrong" way to play Doom 3, something that can't be said for its predecessors given some of the more dubious ports back then...

    • @THHDReviews
      @THHDReviews  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Oh yeah, the horror elements were always there, and the leap in tech just let them embrace it more.
      It almost seems like a late 90s sequel would have bridged the gap a bit, and had classic fans more prepared, but even then some would still complain! Haha

      @@THHDReviews I feel that Doom 64 would've made a perfect "transitionary" title, but it was exclusive to the Nintendo 64 and most classic fans were on the PC at that time. Oh, well. Not all fans are created equally.
      And I'm not joking about there being no "wrong" way to play Doom 3: I feel that all three versions have something to add to the table (Vanilla being the way it was intended with more intense gameplay due to reduced ammo drops, Xbox Classic offering some slick new menus and scares plus a Co-Op mode, and BFG Edition's changes to ammo drops and flashlight being a more welcoming experience to those who might feel alienated).

      This is why I can't stand when people say how all that childish bullshit in Eternal like the rotating stars above enemy heads is just going back to Doom's original arcade roots. To my mind, in many ways Doom 3 is closer to the original conception of the first game back in 1992 - check out the 'Doom Bible' if you ever have time. OG Doom was originally concieved to be slower, more atmospheric, more story-driven, and with mild RPG elements. At least some of this seems to have been the aim here, as a template.
