LavenderTowne it kind of depends. Some art schools have an average of how many there should be. Just don’t add 200 when the recommended max amount is 20
@@gillettewow4667 so can you like do 50 just to be safe, and only send the max amount when required? like what if you want to send this to many schools i'm new to this
French Fry many schools will tell you how much they are looking for. In my opinion, put in as much as you want in it, as long as they are your best pieces you can make, and show your skills as an artist, remember, you should not put in unfinished sketches. You can also send them your sketchbooks too! Or a link that followed to a website filled with art! Which ever you prefer. I recommend talking to your counselors for more advice, I’m still in middle school so I don’t know a lot, but I am applying to an art highschool, so I’ve learned a bit. I don’t really know much about sending different stuff to different schools, I’d recommend just sending a variety or pieces to each school, for example, you send all schools 3 different types of still life drawings, each showing your shading techniques and how you’re able to make composition, etc. Like i said, talk to your counselors and the counselors over there!
Another really important thing to include in a portfolio for art school is to have variety. Don't stick to one medium, subject matter throughout the entire thing. it also depends what program you are going into. I'm first year Illustration and in my portfolio i included some perspective drawing, life drawing, anatomy studies, and my own work. You can include anime work but try to keep it limited because a lot of people who interview you for the portfolio don't want to see that. If you include anime/cartoon drawings make sure you include drawings that also show that you understand human anatomy. Many places will also ask for a sketchbook and it's super important at least from experience. If you have to include one, make sure to do a lot of studies, experimentation with styles and mediums, and process work. lots of process work. if you have process work for your portfolio pieces that's also good to put in there. Good luck to everyone applying to school soon!
OMG yes, all that fruit nonsense. I honestly think that's what saved my portfolio when submitting it. I was so worried I didn't have enough nice pieces, so I just threw in a bunch of still life and figure drawings. They'll eat it right up!! Wish I could've watched this last year, would have made it less stressful but that's okay XD. Thank you LavenderTowne! :D
I have a question. What is the logic behind having to prove that you know how to draw in order to get into a career that teaches you how to draw? You aren't expected to know how to program before getting into computer science, neither is anyone expected to know the law before studying to become a lawyer. Like, what are you taught in art school that you aren't already (seemingly) expected to already know before you even apply? What's the line? Will you be accepted if you can draw really well but suck at coloring? Or if your perspective sucks? What if you can do hands really well but can't-do faces? It all seems so incredibly arbitrary and random. If I want to become a doctor I go to school to learn whatever is required, but if I want to become an artist and I hadn't been interested in it since my childhood I'm pretty much fucked. Seems so weird to me.
Pythagoras Mom well for medicine and computer science, pretty much everyone I know has taken computer science classes in high school or taken biology/anatomy classes and done research for medicine. It's the same for art and a lot of other competitive majors
I had absolutely 0 programming experience before getting into CS, but I do see your point. I guess it's weird since almost no school teaches art in any decent way. If you want to study art, you have to had made that decision well before college age, I just think that sucks. If you want to study astrophysics your curriculum starts with calculus I and physics I, you have to know very basic things to get going, but with art school I feel like they ask so much more of you to get started.
Pythagoras Mom yeah that's true. But if you're really talented, there's still a chance to improve your art skills enough for art school in just high school
i think it just depends on the school tbh, some are for beginners, some are more advanced. it's like that with a lot of professional schools tbh, if you're majoring in biology, they probably expect you to know the basics that you learned in highschool and all. colleges of any sorts look at your gpa and such for the same reason. art is just more difficult because unlike other fields, it takes a very long time to master. you could probably study medicine for a year starting with 0 experience and learn quite a bit, but i've been drawing for nearly five years and i definitely still need to improve quite a bit.
Don't take me too seriously, but I think it depends on the school. If your going into as much of an extream enviorment at Lavendertowne then they want most of the students on the same page. Where as other schools that are less cutthroat and/or art based, the need to be on other's levels is less. Maybe, this is just theory.
BaeBlade make them strong, powerful, and make them warriors. I'll leave. (Just try not making it overpowered. Say a trait is adventurous, maybe they can also be curious and that could get them into trouble. Yet it'd make for a good story or drawing.
This is a weird request to see here, since I honestly don't think she is used to drawn "strong powerful warriors", since her style goes more for the cute and cartoony side, well, at least by what she shows on her channel.
I know, but another reason I wanted her to do this is because she has quite a unique cartoony style and seeing a strong armored character would be quite cool and interesting
Need advice: I’m a high school freshman who plans to go to an art school someday. Should I start to make a portfolio now? Or at least something similar?
I'm in first year junior high and I still haven't done a portfolio at all yet (although planning to). Maybe at this time you could just start of experimenting with styles and mediums as well as practicing quite alot. I'm actually planning to start doing watercolor and oil painting along with my digital art and sketches (once this pandemic is over and I can get supplies that is)! Practice alot, learn new things, enhance your skills (anatomy, color theory, etc.) you might find something you like and in turn can put that in your future portfolio. By 10th grade to senior high you could start planning it out and whatnot (it's what most people from my school going to art school did)! Hope this helps!
As a highschool senior who’s going to apply to a school that requires a portfolio, START. You have all the time right now to experiment and take all the art classes that you can. You might not include your freshman works in your portfolio but you could use those for inspiration. Your highschool years are really important so make it count and don’t do the mistake that I did, start creating for my portfolio just a few months ago 😂 good luck
As a Senior who got accepted into an art school, I agree with experimenting. You have time to prepare the skills you want to show off. The requirements of the portfolio can be different depending on where you apply. The school I was accepted into recommended including only drawings I had done in the last year, so just keep up the practice and I'm sure you'll eventually get into an art school.
As an artist just who started "recently" (3 years is nothing compared to some others) your videos have helped me so much! I'm so glad I found your channel, you've gotten me through tons of art blocks!
Even if it's incomplete, it's super cool to see some of the portfolio pieces you used to get into art school! I'd definitely love to see more of your pieces from the other portfolio you mentioned. I'm working on my portfolio for school right now and seeing your work is both incredibly helpful and inspirational!
I've been really anxious about it i've had no idea what art teacher standards were so i felt a lot limited when it came to art style, level of realism and so on I've been tunnel visioning on my portfolio for a long time now so it only made it worse but it feels good to see someone so chill about it i hope everythings goes fine thanks again i really needed this even 2 years after the video's published
Any advice for animal artists like me? I'm terrible at humans and I tend to stick to animals and original species. Thank you for making this video! It was super helpful!
Talmorne Try and learn simple/cartoon anatomy before diving into hyper realism, and make sure you do clear guidelines! I used to be terrible at anatomy (still am, honestly) but was good at animals/anthro stuff, but I got into cartoony stuff before realism and that really helped!
I'm so glad you made this video, I'm looking to go to school for animation and I'm so lost in the whole process and this just shed a light that I really needed. Thank you so much!

As someone who is going to go to art school in 3 years to be an art teacher, this is sooooo helpful oml. I literally had no idea how to do anything for this, so thank you
I would like to thank you for making this youtube video. I was applying for high schools a month or two ago and to get a better chance of getting into this high school, I had to make an online portfolio. I was so stumped because I was applying for the art major and my digital art was finally getting really good, but I didn't know how to make the darn portfolio. Then I saw this video and everything just started falling into place. I worked my butt off on that portfolio and I worked my butt off on that application in general(cuz I had to write an essay). No matter what happens, I will always be greatful to you for making these videos and inspiring me to work my butt off in everything I do(including art) so that I can be successful one day. I hope one day to be as successful and as inspirational as you have been inspiring me since sixth grade. Please continue the great work and I'll be sure to continue catching up on your fantastic comics.
Thank you a lot for making all of these videos! They have been extremely helpful in how to get into an art school if I do choose this path(I'm still deciding). Please keep making more because I'm sure several people have appreciated them! ^-^

I could just kiss you for making this video. Here I was almost going out of my mind about how to go about making my portfolio and along comes Lavendertown with this video. I'm near actual tears of gratefulness. 😭😭😭
Thanks for the Video, it's very informative! If i'm allowed to add a bit of advice as well, to anyone who is making a website: Your Portfolio and Home page should not be the same thing. A home page is a great place to show off your personality! and/or other qualities that make you = you, in a positive way. I find that a big splash screen with some text about yourself or a general greeting to the visitor, you could also show your latest project(that's a good way to show that you "update" the site regularly), or otherwise direct the traffic that your site receives!
Hey LavenderTowne, I'm trying to get into an art school next year and I have a pretty well thought out portfolio, unfortunately my art tutor wanted me, well to be more literal, forced me to do this online class to be more attractive at my portfolio review. Am I wrong for not wanting to do the class because I've already made some strides towards attractiveness to art schools?
To be fair, different types of art can be complementary to each other. I am a graphic design major, and I've taken a couple classes in animation and photography that turned me on to new ideas and ways of doing things. If you do the online class, it will likely help in its own way. If anything, you'll have more skills than the typical animator, and that will always make you a more competitive candidate. It's ultimately up to you, but try to keep an open mind.

You're probs 16 now but there's art high school!!!
@@mizumochidonuts8194 where's in here? tell meh..TELL MEEEEH(or link an art school for kids or smthn)
How many drawings would you suggest putting in a portfolio?
Usually between 10 and 20!
Like i said, talk to your counselors and the counselors over there!

wow, hope you pass!
At first i thought u were a channel that played the piano

Why did you think that?

... I don't see it.
Frostywhisker I-I have no idea
LavenderTowne can you do a video talking about how to design strong, powerful and warrior like characters
BaeBlade make them strong, powerful, and make them warriors.
I'll leave.
(Just try not making it overpowered. Say a trait is adventurous, maybe they can also be curious and that could get them into trouble. Yet it'd make for a good story or drawing.
but lavendertowne never draws strong powerful warriors?
This is a weird request to see here, since I honestly don't think she is used to drawn "strong powerful warriors", since her style goes more for the cute and cartoony side, well, at least by what she shows on her channel.
I know, but another reason I wanted her to do this is because she has quite a unique cartoony style and seeing a strong armored character would be quite cool and interesting
BaeBlade Villagers!!!
Yes!!! I was looking forward to finally seeing your Portfolio!
I say go for it I’m currently a sophomore and planning on trying to start mine it always helps to start early and practice as much as possible
Aaahh how the fuck do I show a voice or a skill!
As an artist just who started "recently" (3 years is nothing compared to some others) your videos have helped me so much! I'm so glad I found your channel, you've gotten me through tons of art blocks!

I draw furry art xD rip chances for putting in that for passion art. Imagine having fruit nonsense and then bam giant fluffy red panda
Just make sure there’s no people who’ll bully you for furry art. I don’t like nor hate furries but some people bully for it. Be careful!
Maybe in a portfolio, add how you understand animals, draw them in a perspective, for passion, I say go for it.
Kung Fu Panda, Zootopia, kids shows, there’s plenty of opportunity for artists that like drawing anthropomorphised animals
Even if it's incomplete, it's super cool to see some of the portfolio pieces you used to get into art school! I'd definitely love to see more of your pieces from the other portfolio you mentioned. I'm working on my portfolio for school right now and seeing your work is both incredibly helpful and inspirational!

Any advice for animal artists like me? I'm terrible at humans and I tend to stick to animals and original species.
Thank you for making this video! It was super helpful!
Talmorne
Try and learn simple/cartoon anatomy before diving into hyper realism, and make sure you do clear guidelines! I used to be terrible at anatomy (still am, honestly) but was good at animals/anthro stuff, but I got into cartoony stuff before realism and that really helped!
Look at salem shanouha channel so many videos about drawing the human head and figure and proko channel is also great
Good luck
I have the exact opposite problem 😅
I probably don't know what i'm talking about but I think you should improve your human anatomy while also showing what you love and are good at.
I'm so glad you made this video, I'm looking to go to school for animation and I'm so lost in the whole process and this just shed a light that I really needed. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this!!! I'm still a kid, but I constantly stress over how I'm going to get into art school, and now I can be at ease. Again, thank you!
thank you so much for making this video!! i'm really stressing out about what to put in my portfolio and i've been so lost... this is a huge help for me!! 💕
Thank the heavens for you! I've been dying to know how to make one of these for high school! Thank you ^J^

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG YESSSSSS❤️❤️
*insert Edgy/emo band names here* * your profile picture 😂
Thank you so much for making this!! I just found out today that I got accepted into the art school I applied for, this was very helpful.
Congrats (a bit late) how is it?
Thank you a lot for making all of these videos! They have been extremely helpful in how to get into an art school if I do choose this path(I'm still deciding). Please keep making more because I'm sure several people have appreciated them! ^-^
AHHH OMG YOUR ART IS EVOLVING AND ITS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!
my class had to go to lecture abt buliding a collage portfolio the other day but they only talked abt being a doctor or engineer but I WANT TO STUDY ART this rlly helped :,3
snØw bØi DUDE MY HIGHSCHOOL ALSO WENT TO A COLLEGE LECTURE ABOUT ATTENDING THEIR SCHOOL AND PORTFOLIOS, AND THEY DIDN'T MENTION ART EITHER.
*IS THIS A COINCIDENCE???*
Yeah art isn’t a hugely talked about career in school. I also want to be a princess and that’s not very talked about either. The struggle has never been realer :(
I THINK NOT LETS START A RIOT
Im 16 and my portfolio was approved which im so happy about and I got accepted 🥳 I was rlly curious about lavandertowns advice tho and I'm glad I watched. I'm not a professional so don't listen to me but I think smth that rlly helped me was putting a variety of things like perspective, character design and etc... mine was very polished cuz I had an art teacher help me make it on photoshop and everything but yeah make it look clean and show every type of thing you make!
Well, now I have absolutely no worries about getting into an art school with my portfolio. Best confidence boost seeing your old portfolio pieces and how you're grown.
I could just kiss you for making this video. Here I was almost going out of my mind about how to go about making my portfolio and along comes Lavendertown with this video. I'm near actual tears of gratefulness. 😭😭😭
Thanks for the Video, it's very informative!
If i'm allowed to add a bit of advice as well, to anyone who is making a website:
Your Portfolio and Home page should not be the same thing.
Now to make my mum let me go to art school...
You are my savior, i recently applied to 2 art schools and i was worrying about my portfolio but you came in at the right time. Thanks!
Thank You so much! I have never needed a video so much before. If I get into art school I will thank you a million times over!
Yes! Im young but my dream is to be a childrens film/book animator or illustrator
Wish me luck!
Good luck

Hey LavenderTowne,
I'm trying to get into an art school next year and I have a pretty well thought out portfolio, unfortunately my art tutor wanted me, well to be more literal, forced me to do this online class to be more attractive at my portfolio review. Am I wrong for not wanting to do the class because I've already made some strides towards attractiveness to art schools?
Just do it, if it doesn't wear you out, why not?
Thanks man
It's in a field that I know very little about and have very little interest in!!! I'm an animation major and this is for design art
Fine
Welp, may as well get ready for art school 6 years early lmao 😂
Please never stop posting, you are so inspiring. You deserve 10 million subscribers!!💖💖💖💖
