    According to the National Institute Of Mental Health, at least 16.2 million Americans have experienced a major depressive episode in the past. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America estimates more than 40 million American have some form of an anxiety disorder.
    So, with these truly alarming numbers, why is the stigma around mental illness just as firm as it was 20 years ago? That's what superstar singer Josh Groban is trying to change one interview at a time.

    Josh, we, your fans are with you all the way. You are not alone. We love you and pray you will always stay strong. Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed about or feeling alone. I myself felt a depression years ago and for 3 years grabbled with it. I was literally sick every day. Taking meds wasn't helping so I sought strength from God to help me get through each day. We are with you. We love you and so we ask you to stay strong knowing how your fans feel. ❤️

    I am a senior. I love Josh and have listened to his music from the start of his career. He is very brave to discuss what he is going through. I admire him for talking to the public about his experience. I suffered until I was in my 40's with panic/anxiety. I have taken a generic form of Paxil since I was diagnosed and still take it. It takes a supreme effort to go out into the world for me. What I have learned from my experience is self-love. I have learned a lot about me and found the ability to pat myself on the back and learned ways to comfort myself. Every day is a challenge. Josh, you are amazing and just a super caring person. It has been a joy to watch you grow as an artist. Hugs

    I can't thank you enough Josh!! I suffer from bipolar, anxiety, PTSD, agoraphobia, and fear of people. These disorders are very, very hard to deal with. If you have a broken leg, people understand. My disorders, along with millions, aren't seen and misunderstood, sometimes not tolerated. I do take medications to stabilize me and help with suicidal thoughts. It's critical for people to understand the severity of these disorders. It seems when celebrities talk about it and share knowledge, people listen. So , thank you again for being a voice for us that need it. I can be a scary and lonely life.

      Better yet, don't read @Ana Martins comments. They are dismissive and presumptuous and exhibit the same 'this is what he's obviously feeling all the time so he can't be suffering depression because this is the smiling face he shows us' nonsense that society seems to insist defines the people in the limelight, reinforcing the stigma and ignoring how many often seem so very happy and productive until they're found on the floor somewhere after committing suicide and we're all left asking "how did nobody see that coming?". Better to go to the source, watch the interviews over the years he's given on this topic and keep supporting him as you obviously already do.

      Ana Martins, I saw your thread of communication with Survivrs, and I really appreciated how you came to mutual understanding through sharing a lot of your backgrounds. It was very helpful to me personally. As a person who gets depressed periodically as a byproduct of CFS (in my past), ADD (diagnosed later in life), and residual effects of a mild stroke and natural gas poisoning last year, even though mitigated to some extent by my faith and relationship with God, I know how someone coming across as being dismissive of coping strategies (like listening to music or singing to raise one’s spirits) can be really a downer. Having depressive moods, even if it may not be considered clinical depression, can be very debilitating and paralyzing for even long periods of time, as I well know. The best thing that can happen for a person prone to depression or depressive moods (really, the best thing for each and every person) is to be listened to, to feel understood, and be encouraged to do whatever it takes for them to thrive and blossom and have hope. I think you know what I mean, and from what I have seen of you elsewhere, I know you are wonderfully capable of expressing empathy and encouragement for anyone who experiences depression in any of its forms. 🥰 I encourage you in your journey to continue to do all that helps you, whatever raises you up so that you can walk on mountains!!

      When we suffer from these "issues/problems", we can find our "peace" within one place and one place ONLY! It's strange to most people to hear this; but in all honesty, for those of us who do suffer these anxieties, depressions, thoughts of things that we don't even want to admit we have, there is only one way to find our "cure" and that is for us to kneel and humble ourselves to the ONLY ONE who can give us the peace and guidance we so desperately need!
      It's a sad shame that we balk, roll our eyes and laugh when we are offered this answer to our problems; but if we put our egos and assumptions aside and actually "try it", --- with sincerity --- you'd be AMAZED at the "cure" that you will be given!
      I know there will be many who laugh and criticize what I'm saying; but my answer to these critics is this: obviously you have placed YOURSELF above and before the ONLY ONE who truly has all the answers to your questions and the cure for which you seek! Should you be "daring" enough to actually try what I'm saying, your life WILL take a drastic turn and be forever changed. So I ask you to put your preconceived notions aside and seek, with all of your heart, the ONLY ONE who has the answers you'll EVER need, and be prepared to have your life forever changed!

      It’s all mental and it’s real, then through God’s word and the understanding we learn to deal with our issues of the past/ our demons and not give them the power we use to. We just have to learn to forgive ourselves and others and not let our feelings rule us. This is my conclusion after sooo many years of the struggle. I am so much better now, but it took self awareness and knowledge. Peace.

      Every thought, every thing that happens in your life will stay in your memory forever. You cannot erase memories you don't want to remember, as much as you wish you could. You have to accept them as part of your life which is sometimes very painful. Only people who have experienced depression themselves can really understand what you are going through in times like this.

    Thank you Josh, and yes it is a life long struggle. I've had major depression and panic disorder as well as several other mental health illnesses for about 50 years now. I grew up alone, no one to play with, and when I went to school, I had no clue how to socialize with others and remained painfully shy through high school. I started having panic attacks when I was about 13. I didn't know that's what they were at the time. When people talk about a stroke, everyone feels horrible, but label it mental illness and nobody says a word, making us suffer in silence.

    • @survivrs
      @survivrs Před 5 lety +6

      Ana, obviously you don't have as much as a high school education, if that, but did you read that MILLIONS of Americans have mental health problems but they are too scared of losing their job when their employer finds out they are seeing a therapist or a shrink. If only it were as easy as you think. Mental health offices have been vacated and closed in my state, and there are so many people who need the help. Co-pays to see a shrink aren't something that's easily affordable for many. There is still a HUGE stigma about mental illness. Just let someone say they have depression and everyone near them runs away as if the person was a leper and they were terrified of leprosy. The simple word depression even scares people. My problems are complicated, but I'm not schizophrenic, I wouldn't kill or injure someone. I have spent hundreds of hours in a shrinks office. That was between '97 and '03, but she and her husband moved to another state where she had grown up. She was closer than a sister to me. I could email her. She was compassionate and paid attention to everything I said or asked. For the next 7 years I tried to find someone who could try to fill her boots, but all I found were psychologists who yawned and watched the clock. I don't respond to any anti-depressants. I went through a mix of 18 meds, sometimes 2 things at a time, but after at least a couple of months, I noticed no change. I finally told the guy who prescribes my meds for anxiety/panic attacks to quit trying any others because if they are new, my insurance won't pay and I'm on disability so my income is limited. Most of us, whether we are famous or unknown try to keep that little secret tightly locked up. I can't even communicate with either of my sisters. When I was 13, my oldest sister attempted suicide. At some point in the 80's, my other sister was a receptionist at the mental health clinic, and after 2 weeks, listening to her talk, you would think she had M.D. behind her name. It doesn't make her want to be around her kid sister with what she knows. For people wanting to get help, they will usually find that the waiting list is long. That is as bad as calling the suicide hotline and being put on hold. For anyone battling any kind or severity of mental health illness, my heart breaks for you because I put those ugly shoes on every day, and I wished something could be done to help everyone. So, don't just jump in and assume something you know nothing about.

    • @survivrs
      @survivrs Před 5 lety +2

      Ok, I'm sorry I jumped right down your throat because whenever someone just pops off with "see a therapist" they typically have no clue about mental health illness and what any of them do to a person. I was closing in on 40 when one day I was in with my family doctor and before he left, I said "can I ask you something?". He backed up, closed the door, and I had his full attention. I told him that one day the previous week, I'd been on a trip home from work and somewhere in the middle, I just started crying my eyes out and had no clue why. I was thinking about if I saw a semi truck coming my way, I could just swerve into his lane and die. It took several therapists, several meds, and he finally sent me to a shrink who if nobody else could help me, she could. Well, it took about 6 months before she could get past my facade. I was in health care, and I always had a smile plastered onto my face, something I actually learned to do as a child so that I wouldn't hear either 1) "I will give you something to cry about" or 2) it was a great way to keep everyone from asking "what's wrong?" when I didn't want to tell anyone anything, but she watched my leg bounce up and down or my fingers twisting around each other or if I had a bottle of pop, I might be twisting it as if I were trying to choke the life out of it but one day, (I was only getting 15 minutes with her each time) she asked me to write stuff down for her. I started out with a half page, and eventually, I had a word processor and was printing out 3 or 4 page letters for her to read. She was the first person other than my husband who has heard some of the worst times of my life. Once she started figuring out what was going on with me, I was having to work out a way to see her at her main office for a full hour. Keeping that secret from an employer was very hard. In fact, I had finally been pushed absolutely as far as I could at work one day and I asked for the next day off but was told no. In less than 5 minutes, I had sent my shrink the info, and in 10 minutes while working with a patient, my supervisor came into my office, slapped a Fax down on my desk and asked me what that was about....I was fucking stunned. I also felt my career was over because it had come through showing her letter head, and not only did she tell them that I would get the next day off, I was to have the following 6 weeks off...Had I been alone without a patient in my room, I can think of what would have gone through my head, but not what I was going to say. After I read it, I looked up at her and told her "I don't know what that's about, all I wanted off was one day." She grabbed that fax and stomped out of my room. Finally in '99, after 18 solid years of a job that I loved, I resigned. My employer had done about every damn thing possible to embarrass or shame me, and I just couldn't take it anymore. I'd already had a nervous breakdown about 6 weeks prior to that and I had my wrist sliced so wide open and bleeding down the drain in the bathroom. I didn't expect my husband to get home early the day I did that, but fortunately our 2 boys were at the babysitters house, and besides a bunch of sutures, I got to spend 15 hours in a psych ward. My issues go back to when I was about 5. When I was 8 or 9, I was throwing my arm into a wood fence post hoping to break my arm just to get some attention from my parents, but I was never able to accomplish it. All I ever got from my efforts were bruises. I grew up alone on a farm, and when I was old enough to go to school, I didn't know how to socialize with other kids and was pretty quiet all through my school years. So while I had no idea how fucked up my head was as a child....I do now, and wish my shrink could have fixed me before her family chose to move 1,000+ miles away in 2003. I wrote to her for a few years, but as I had to wait longer and longer for her responses, I finally gave up. I've started letters so many times but eventually deleted them. So again, I'm sorry for the assumptions I made. It's just that when I see a comment like the one you left, I get really pissed off because not all of us can be fixed. My husband can verify that. What is as hard on me as major depression and panic disorder is PTSD and BPD. What really amped things up was my dad's death 6 days before my 37th birthday. Sorry this got so long, thanks for the education.

      @survivrs Před 5 lety +3

      Ana, no need to be sorry, we both said things that were probably uncalled for, and that is what is bad about this place. You can't always be sure how a person means something. I have problems with people who want to tell me to just cheer up because I want to put a fist in their face, and I thought you were one of them, but you're quite the opposite, and I am really glad we got to talk this out. I truly appreciate what you said. I have started so many letters to my former shrink, just to go back to where we left off, but it's been so long now. I have a feeling she would smile if I sent her a letter, but I would probably be setting myself up for disappointment because if she did what she did after she was away which was to not reply for a long time, it didn't help my depression, so eventually I just quit. Losing her was nearly as bad as if I had lost my husband or one of our kids. I'm grateful that she was able to help me as much as she did.I think one of my sisters actually hates her because I became closer to her than my sister. Oh well. Have a good week!!!!

    Thank you, Josh, for sharing your struggle. I have suffered with clinical depression and severe anxiety for most of my adult life. It's hard to deal with. People don't understand what we're going through. I can't tell you how many times I've heard, "cheer up." If I could cheer up, I would. There is a stigma still around mental illness. It does make many of us feel alone. I certainly do. Although I know people in my life care, when I'm very down, I can't seem to remember that. It means the world to me and many others suffering from these debilitating conditions that you are being so open about your issues. Thank you again, Josh.
