  • Gary Clark Jr. performs a cover of "Catfish Blues" originally by Robert Petway at the Farm Aid concert in Raleigh, NC on September 13, 2014. Farm Aid was started by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985 to keep family farmers on the land and has worked since then to make sure everyone has access to good food from family farmers. Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's board of directors in 2001.
    For more information about Farm Aid, visit: farmaid.org/youtube
    Farm Aid's performances are donated by the artists in order to raise funds and raise awareness for family farmers. They've raised their voices to help - what can you do?

      Hellfister yea, i did not like this version. not to bring up hendrix again, but this kinda sounds more like red house or voodoo chile. when clark jr. jams/solos it doesn't seem to fit the song or something. like he just went off on a tangent and didn't tie it back together

      Clapton indicating he was the heir apparent to the blues - once he got a hold of him - he through him out in front of others - whether he wanted it or not. The other is Derek Trucks... He said the blues were in safe hands.

    Heard many versions of this, Hendrix is still the best version after all these years. Sorry to say this, but Gary Clark reminds me of a black John Mayer, commercialized wannabe blues. Give the stage to Eric Gales....those who don't know him, do a youtube search....please.

    • @BlackMusicGenre
      @BlackMusicGenre Před 7 lety +2

      gmlasam Eric Gales is no joke, but I wouldn't go as far as to say Gary Clark Jr . is a black John Mayer nor is he commercialized . As a blues player Gary is legit . There's nothing forced or fraudulent about his approach . Now I will say this about Mayer . His rock playing is cool , but his blues playing is not convincing .

    • @gmlasam
      @gmlasam Před 7 lety

      BlackMusicGenre I'm a blues player myself and I don't hear any blues element at all with Gary Clark. All I hear is a pop star blues wannabe and I hear mediocre pop guitar playing that tries to sound blues. Yes, just like John Mayer. Aside form Eric Gales, you know who's got the blues? Christone Ingram. This young cat has more blues and plays from the soul than Gary Clark and John Mayer put together. Why isn't this young cat known outside the blues community? You know why, today's music isn't about music, its about the packaging that's the difference and that is why real musician, real artist like Eric Gales and Christone will never be as worthy to the public because they are not pretty enough and blues is not about how you look, its about feel, its about music your soul is crying out to. So, from another blues player to another, I respectfully disagree with you brotha. Peace!

    • @BlackMusicGenre
      @BlackMusicGenre Před 7 lety +1

      gmlasam I listened to Christone Ingram and that dude is going to be something special if he stays on his path . As Gary is concerned . I can agree to disagree if he's a blues player or not . One he is in my opinion is an artist . You have a good one .

    • @blcklivesmatter5114
      @blcklivesmatter5114 Před 7 lety

      I have to agree. I expected more I guess, maybe because of all the hype but I was never all that impressed. He's ok but I don't think I would go out of my way to go see him. I have always liked Gales.

    • @BlackMusicGenre
      @BlackMusicGenre Před 7 lety +2

      paddie3535 Well me personally I never had the expectation that Gary was the second coming of Hendrix . I don't feel like he's overrated . He doesn't have to display a bunch of fretboard acrobatics for me to like him. This cover right here is a smooth grove . Maybe he is still on a journey with his playing or maybe not . After all, blues is not a sprint . It's a marathon . Again , I never expected him to be Jimi or any other guitar player people choose to compare him to . I've listen to Eric Gales a few time and he's a great guitarist . I believe believe Gary doesn't have to be Eric to be great . Just like B.B. King, Robert Cray, and Buddy Guy don't necessarily have the same skill set , but they're all great in my book . So I personally dig Gary . I purchased his albums and listened to his live performances . He doesn't come off as some bubble gum pop act posing as something he's not . At the end of the day people are going to have their opinions .

    Gary Clark Jr. has a great voice and honestly really plays with feel, but I find his playing boring and super generic. Just overrated. I hate to be that guy, but just listen to Hendrix's version of this song and then his. Just opposite ends of the spectrum entirely.

    • @jimchumley6568
      @jimchumley6568 Před 7 lety +3

      Ryan DiLello Come on man comparing him to Hendrix, give me a break. Gary Clark does R&B too and has a much versatile and better vocals than Hendrix. With Gary Clarks voice he doesnt really have to play guitar. Listen to some of his other music besides blues. Awesome singer and very soulfull voice.

      +Sebastian Squirrelmail Hendrix, great as he was, doesn't own the Catfish Blues. There are killer versions of this song from Tommy McClennan to Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, BB King, Lightnin Hopkins(with a blow speaker no less), and there's a NSFW version by Son Thomas that's worth a listen too. The tune belongs to the Blues and an artist like Gary Clark Jr. can add his flavor to this classic. I love the deep low down funky groove he and his band are laying down on this song. It's one of my favorite versions.

    • @SOPAFUE
      @SOPAFUE Před 8 lety +1

      OBVIOUSLY, ITS NOT HIS SONG, BUT BE GOOD PEOPLE AMONG US... NO ONE TOUCH HENDRIX TOES... HIS VERSION IS THE DEFINITIVE, MAKE LOOK THIS GUY AN AMATEUR... AND LAST THING; I SUPPORT GARY, OK? BUT THIS IS AN AWFUL VERSION, THE HENDRIX ROOF IS TOO HIGH...

    • @Odin029
      @Odin029 Před 8 lety

      Sebastian Squirrelmail It's cool. Music is big enough for us to agree to disagree. I love the Louisiana swamp funk groove of this song. Its like listening to Junior Well's original Hoodoo Man and then listening to Lightnin Slim's version. Both great just different. Nobody touches Hendrix and Gary seems smart enough not to try

    I know this guy is talented don't get me wrong but I just don't get why he's lauded as this blues guitar messiah. He just plays very basic riffs and simple chords. I mean he does play with real soul but his skill on guitar is on a Simple Simon level it seems. I've been watching his videos for a few years now an I just don't get it. In my opinion the young kid calling himself Kingfish is the truth when it comes to the new blues messiah title. Gary you are definitely talented and entertaining but a guitar God you are not I'm afraid. There's a 12 or 13 year old kid in my neighborhood that plays guitar as well as you and he just got his first guitar last Christmas.
