We had my husband's secretary sing this at our wedding. Gorgeous! It just seemed to fit our journey together. It has been a very difficult one, too, with many losses, and a beautiful, incredible daughter. We've been married 15 years now.
This is a different piano accompaniment than the one she used on the DVD that had all piano. It's quite a bit more imaginative. And she plays and sings simultaneously yet with complete independence!
What a consumate musician. Constantly evolving pianist, guitarist, composer, orchestrator, and a voice to die for.
I grew up listening to Judy, and this has always been one of my favorite songs of hers. The imagery it suggests...it's just beautiful, and of course her voice is and always has been amazing.
After her concert in about 1984 (Plymouth, UK), she gave me a real thrill by signing my falling-to-pieces JC Song Book in the back of her limousine. Still have the book and still recall the moment... ...unfortunately, she didn't ask to come back to her hotel with her though...I would have come, but I guess she was nervous...still, I'm sure she tells her friends about this regret more than I do. She was pitch perfect and this was the best song of the evening for mine.
The poet and the artist in her! Her composition is so original, something that can only match her smooth angelic voice. I am so happy to have found this video of judy singing this song. thanks. :-)
This has always been one of my favorite Judy Collins songs. Thank you for sharing this video. I have had the pleasure of seeing her perform live. Sending Peace&Hugs From Texas! ~Mimi~
I agree with Dayepipes. She evokes magical, wooded glades, lonely winded hilltops and rain-darkened skies with birds in muted flight - there is sunlight and moonbeams and gems in silent streams...her eloquence and the richness and beauty of her lyrics envelope you with storybook places of the heart. Her timbre and chrystal voice awaken dreams and comfort...and send you to the places you ache to be... Thomas
This song always reminds me of the era of life I was in at the time I discovered it....only just back in '2004 ; almost eerily sounds like it somehow. Sooo glad to own the CD of her grtst.hits !!!!!
This and her "Albatross" are on her _Wildflowers_ album. I heard them as a teen boy in the late 60's when the album was new. Nothing in music that was current at that time came close, in my experience anyway, to such a powerful demonstration of a woman's experience as these songs. I remember feeling as I listened, "what must it be like to live such a life?" Thanks Judy.
If you like Judy's song, listen to Dan Fogelberg's version on his album "Twin Sons of Different Mothers". He alters the lyrics a bit, but the song is just as beautiful as Judy's. Rest in Peace Dan, the world will miss your music and your voice.
Wow! One of my favourite songs from Judy Collins. I never tire of listening to Wildflowers. Such a beautiful, moving album. This live recording (does anyone know where it comes from?) shows how superb she was/is. The piano and voice on this version are excellent. I almost prefer it to the original.
such a beautiful song, her performance of her own song is fantastic. not sure if her version or dan folgerberg/tim weisberg version is better. what do you think?
There is a unique serenity in her version (of many songs). "From a Distance" has some commenters saying her version is "sappy" compared to certain other singers. Yet, when I listen to some of them, they seem rather nasal and teen like. I think those commenters misunderstand the spirit of these songs. They are in effect, hymns, not rock performances.
Another artist the kind of which we may never see again. I think Sara McLachlan carries the spirit. I'm going to post Dan Fogleberg's version today. Hope that you like it.
hi, Try the album Wildflowers, I think it's still available, although it dates to about 1968. there are three of her own songs on this album: Since You've Asked, Sky Fell and Albatross (my favourite), plus covers of songs by the likes of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. Other notable judy Colllins albums (in my opinion) are: In My Life and Who Knows Where The Time Goes. Hope this helps?
I loved it in the'60's, and i still love it. Just exquisite.

I've forgotten how much I love Judy. She has the voice of an Angel.
"Looking for tomorrow's time.
Peace of mind"
Thank you!!!!!!!

As lovely as the first time I heard it.
love ya, Judy. thanks for all the beauty of your voice and self.
I grew up listening to Judy, and this has always been one of my favorite songs of hers. The imagery it suggests...it's just beautiful, and of course her voice is and always has been amazing.
Oh how I love this song. A christian artist, don't remember her name right now, back in 1993 did a close version of this. Very nice.

Wow, she builds on her past with great ability. What a spendid recording of one of my favorite of her youthful works.

Judy is superb.
Beautiful song! I LOVE Dan Fogelberg's version-for some reason it gives me chills the way he sings it.

Thanks Judy.
The late Dan Fogelberg also does an awesome job with this beautiful song
i sang this at my bff's wedding way back in 1969.
I played this at my moral committment ceremony...It was perfect...Too bad the relationship wasn't...
We have seen a million stars laying by the water...I remember you. Cheyenne Canon was yours. It still is.
Beauty
I feel this is for my wife, who sang to me on the first day I met her.

I love Fogelberg's version. His [Homefree Album ] was nice.
@Dayepipes Albatross is one of my several favorite songs of all time. It's hard to find though.

@iluvsantafe I agree. Dan OWNED this song.
I love Judy but I do love Dan Fogelbergs version the best. He was amazing.
