    In 2023, as a new mom, I learned I can fit sewing into much smaller chunks of time than I’d previously thought. I was worried I wouldn’t have time for all of my hobbies, when really I just have to be more intentional with my time! Another great 2023 discovery was your channel :)

      This is great!! As a mom of 2, I've learned that I often don't get to finish things in the amount of time I'm used to having all by myself. Hope you have a great day!!

      @emmychum2121 @@MichelleMonsteraPreach! I just had my third and I'm learning more and more about time management and to just be okay with things taking a little longer and not being able to devote large chunks of time all at once. Still dealing with Mom guilt when I try. 😅 But I just watched another one of Carly's videos earlier where she mentioned she worked for an hour every day on a patchwork. Such a simple concept but what an earth shattering idea. 😆 Why didn't I think of that??

    When you try it on, it looks like the slope of the shoulder is too much. You might need to modify it on the pattern so that it is a little less sloped. It's a very cute top.

    I think I learned going the extra mile makes the results go from 5/10 to 40/10 crisp ironing and measuring twice elevates your garment! I started loving the things I made even more !

    You are so right, I am very nitpicky when I sew my clothes 🙈 I loved seeing the pattern pieces, especially since I self draft most of my clothes, it's so helpful to see shapes and how they work when sewn up.
    2023 was a year of sewing my wardrobe, only buying a small handful of rtw clothes, and making colourful clothes that make me happy, even if they look "kooky" or "unflattering". Also learning how to sharpen my scissors with a kitchen steel was a game changer 🙌😄

  • @MichelleMonstera
    @MichelleMonstera Před 5 měsíci +3

    I love that you described the pattern after you laid it down on the fabric. That was so helpful!

    I just finished a new project right after Christmas and the one thing I learned was about finishing my seams. I've always either gone for a full French seam (which can be exhausting) or simply pressing the raw edges down. For my last project, I overlocked all of the seams and sewed them flat and it looks and feels so nice! I always worried it wouldn't look very professional but it looks just like something you get from the store.

    • @BrynnaLayne
      @BrynnaLayne Před 5 měsíci

      I also learned from this project that making stuff in my style is exactly what I've been missing. I've been so bored with my wardrobe and the excitement from putting something on that feels so ME is the best feeling ever. (It's a quilted jacket made from a quilt with cats in bowties lol)

    I didn't 'learn' it but I finally started doing it in 2023 - tailors tacks. I do them for everything now, fitting, slippery fabrics, it has given me the confidence to actually move from sewing all my free / thirfted fabric into actually sewing the new fabric I bought last year that I haven't wanted to mess up! I'm making some gloves for my son's cosplay out of old bathing suit material and a nightie out of a poly cotton, with some great thrifted lace I found a few weeks ago.

    I got into crochet last year and I love it. I dabble in a ton of hobbies but what made a huge difference and helped crochet to stick around as a hobby: i learned to enjoy crocheting while I was learning it.. I was frustrated by learning patterns, so I crocheted different stitches without a pattern and just enjoyed the rhythm of crocheting. It took a lot of pressure off of me to not make anything

    2023 was a really strong learning year for me! I learnt 1) I looove to make coats 2) I looove reusing scrap fabric for detail work, mocking up a pattern or even interfacing and 3) I'm getting better and better at fitting clothes to my rather abnormal body type! I also sewed with a lot of fabrics I hadn't tried out before. 🎉
    EDIT: I just finished a new maxi skirt and am now gathering materials for a plush toy for my best friend's future newborn!

    I feel your commitment to positivity when you make mistakes! Totally agree that they are all learning opportunities. I screwed up some pretty pricey fabric making something for my partner's granny, but have managed to re-cut the pieces to make little pleated peplum puff sleeve top for myself. Fit isn't perfect, but it's my first project using an overlocker - definitely my game changer for 2023!! Just have the zipper to put in. I'm not scared at all ...

    I use simple art pencils in various colors. They wash out. What I've found that works for me over the decades. Plus they are cheaper too.
    I only made one thing in 2023. It's been a very rough three years of illness and severe pain. I can sit up at the table for up to two hours before needing to rest. Last fall I could only do 15 minutes at a time.
