I own this saw and it's my go to for making large rough cuts quickly. Which makes it great for demolition. Almost nothing beats its size, power, and versatility but... Cuts can cause tearing of the material and repetitive use can be straining due to its weight and vibration. I find myself using a second one handed saw when making many high quality cuts.
@@scroungasworkshop4663 Lol, I guess I could have said "higher quality cuts" instead. My version of a precision sledge is a chisel which further proves your point! 😂
I have owned this recip saw for a few years and use it everyday at work doing HVAC rough in and it never skips a beat ... even the rough in plumbers want to use it instead of their Milwaukee ... sorry boys this isn’t a loaner program you have to buy your own .... all in all it’s a great saw with plenty of power ....
I've had the XR Compact for going on two years. It's awesome, I use the piss out of it, and it's never missed a beat. I've used it for cutting cast iron drain pipe my other saws couldn't reach--hint: Diablo makes a carbide blade, works wonders. I've used it for cutting down / trimming smaller trees. I've used it for demoing several projects. I've used it for cutting PVC and EMT. I've used it as an improvised jigsaw. If I could have only one recip, this would be it, because the positives outweigh the negatives massively. A few complaints about it: starting torque / low RPM torque compared to bigger saws is a fair bit lower, so you might have to start a cut at a higher stroke rate than you'd like. It does jiggle you more than bigger heavier saws, and it has a shorter stroke than bigger saws. But hey, it's a compact saw you can basically use in one hand, and it will reach stuff the bigger saws won't--no such thing as a free lunch. It would be nice if the next version had a speed limit control like my Bosh jigsaw. I'd buy version 2.0 all over again if it had that; usually you don't need the wicked max RPMs this little guy will dish out. You can only feed some materials so fast (plastics and metals especially), and constantly modulating the trigger to the precise RPM you need all the time is kind of a PITA.
Just bought one for DIY jobs and absolutely love it. From jobs in our garden trimming shrubs to cutting up firewood for our firepit and also some indoor jobs it's perfect.
I've owned it for over a year and have put some serious damage on this thing. It can take it. It feels unnaturally powerful for its size and being cordless. I find this compact design (over the traditional) to be a little easier to use one-handed also
I like that recip. Saw it fits well into the tuff box with my circular saw.Fits into small spots and has a comfortable handle position. It does have a bit of vibration more than other reciprocating saws.I like it due its compact size and always having it with me is the fist great factor.
I do have this saw... I've ben cutting roots off of stumps in the past few days and torturing it pretty bad, but it worked like a beast and got the job done easily... barely got hot, just a little bit. I don't think the vibration is bad at all.
Před 4 lety
Probably not too bad, but you'll think it's bad when you primarily use a counterbalanced orbital saw. I have a Milwaukee from the 90s that's orbital and it's as smooth as butter
I have it. Fits into a deep drawer TSTAK box. Fits between studs. Flush cuts. Cuts up, down, left, right, A,B. Easy to carry around. My only gripes are the led could be brighter; no hook; and that the recoil'll beat the shnit out of you even wearing gloves. The most efficient isn't when pushing down. It's when you push the shoe forward to the work and make the blade to the job.
I have this saw...love the size and power, love the 4 position blade holder and it just feels good in the hand. The things I don't like...the vibration and although it definitely sounds mean, it is screaming loud. Definitely a good saw for sure.
I’ve had my over a year . Was cutting out some old black iron heating pipes in a crawl space . Got it wet . Didn’t want to run . Dried it out then it was fine . Great saw for light use . Vibrates a lot . I’m a plumber so it’s great can get up in a attic and buzz a hole though the roof for a stack easily. A HVAC installed should go with the 60V , ( regesters , returns etc . I wouldn’t buy another compact saw again. Unless you want to have 2 in the truck
I own this saw and it’s amazing with a lot of power to get things done. I used it to cut frozen thick, hardened fork bolts and other suspension bolts on a Jeep Commander without issues! 👍🏻👍🏻
Well it’s official, I go to your videos before I buy any tool, your review of the Dewalt Reciprocating saw confirmed it’s capabilities and design strengths. After this comment I will be ordering a unit. Many thanks for sharing your expertise And experience, it’s much appreciated. Roberto (London. UK)
Have two Dewalt reciprocating saws, the brushed two handed version and the compact brushless version. Both work great, but that compact version is half the weight of its bigger brother. And it has the same stroke length as the bigger version 1 1/8”. When you have had two shoulders operations and you are reaching over your head to make difficult cuts, that lighter version makes a big difference in your happiness level.Just my two cents worth.
I have it and I love it. The power helps cut big branches of tree easily. Dewalt charges charges battery in no time. The changing positions of blades does help in many situations.
this is one of my favorite tools it makes taking down small trees a breeze i wouldnt do landscaping without it. It is in almost all of my pictures for my business site they also make excellent hedge trimmers.
The smoothest operation of almost any recip saw is the older Ridgid GenX-4. When I demonstrate Milwaukee Fuel VS Ridgid GenX-4 everyone is shocked by how much quieter, smoother and so much less vibration with the Ridgid. Milwaukee fuel by comparison almost vibrates out of your hands and is so noisy you need hearing protection. With tools the excess noise and vibration is wasted energy, sucking the battery down faster.
That second position for the blade is the main selling point for me in the reciprocating saw. It enables flush cutting against cabinets when demoing kitchen and bathrooms. I have the flex volt and xr saws and they do great 👍
I ordered this one with a Tstack overhere in the Netherlands Dewalt gives also a free 4A battery after selling The price is app $260. Lets put it in the test with a Milwalkee.
I have this and it’s perfect for what I do. I’m in hvac installer and I’m constantly in tight spots especially attics and a compact powerful recip saw like this is perfect
I have one two batteries and I’m a plumber use it daily for wood and pvc pipe no extension cord needed so there for easy to haul had it for about a year and half still strong got my money worth
Great reciprocating saw especially when you are a petite person such as myself, very well balanced and is one of those tools that you don’t know how you managed without it. The 4 way blade and tool less blade change is brilliant, just make life so much easier.
I own De Walt, Milwaukee and Makita tools. Some achieve in certain tools. In a mini reciprocating saw go with Milwaukee overall. De Walt is less powerful, but smaller profile for tighter jobs like plumbing is an advantage.
I love dewalts 20v max tools. I have their baseline recip saw and it’s a good saw. My biggest complaint with dewalts recip saws is the lack of the adjustable shoe. People have been asking for the feature forever, and they still only put it on like 1 saw.
I’ve fully switched from dewalt to Milwaukee on all my tools. Except for this saw. It’s the perfect size and kicks the hackzawls ass. It’s still on the van despite everything else I have is Milwaukee
I use this saw instead of my stihl 201TC to trim small to medium size tree limbs...the battery lasts and the power with one hand is crazy, also lighter to climb with and safer. And quieter too!! What's not to love???
Got it, love it. As a post framer, I use it almost daily cutting off overhang, walk door base plates, and mostly. Cutting off excess post tops over the trusses. I ordered a makita rafter hook to mount it. Best option for scaling buildings when you need something with enough power to efficiently cut through many treated posts and small enough to hook into your pouches and climb nailers trusses and purlins
I try my best to make requested content some times I cant make the requested content fast enough though and that is a great thing about vcgconstruction you are all about the community

The handle ontop of the recip saw makes a big difference in terms of physical size when actually being used.
As far as powertools go, this was one of the best investments I've made, I continuously find myself using it for pretty much anything that needs cutting, if it were any more versatile you'd have to use it as a sewing machine, pro-tip though, make yourself a lanyard for it. And yeas, I'm thrilled about the fact that it's made in America and not the People's Republic like everything else I seem to own.
We have both in our carpentry shop. Most guys grab the one handed for small tasks but take the heavier for most demo work. When things get real we get the 60volt recipicating saw, that is a monster I put it up against a Rigid 18 volt cutting a car along with the DeWalt 20 volt that 60 ran away from both but I like the balance from the DeWalt 20 for most of the time
Waaaas uuuuup VCG ! I have it, it is AWESOME for demo-ing small trees, roots and limbs...some really good size limbs. And there is also a tree limb blade that works with that saw... " wish I found out about that blade before the job was done, would have saved me a few hours of work " . It is loud and vibrates pretty good but this thing is a little BEAST!
I've gotta say Vince, i really like watching your tool reviews. Being a construction guy raised in a construction family it's nice to see how you give great info in a straight & unemotional way. I started watching your stuff last summer and I'm glad i did
All the reviews I've seen.... 1. vibration complaint, noise. Atomic is for space...and power? 2. Battery swap adapters from other brands of batteries. 3. Kit comes with a low run time battery?
I bought the dcs387 brushed version because I got a 4.0 XR battery for free. I like the 4 position blade clamp and an 1.125 inch stroke length. Plus I don’t remember how much I paid but it was less than the XR and it came with a battery.
Nice tool! Hello from Russia!:) It’s sad that CZcams doesn’t make automatic Russian subtitles. It’s not always clear what this is about. Great channel, Vince - you are a very charismatic blogger.
I got this saw 4-5 months ago, has cut pretty well so far. Size is great, but idk how i feel about it on materials like metal conduits. Would like to see that compared the the one handed.
Bought it brought it back way too much vibration super loud. Vibrates so much my buddy thought the blade was moving side to side. Tried a small bimetal chuck in the regular position and there was tons of play in the chuck, blade was totally loose.
It is an amazing saw. Does everything I've demanded and then some. Almost as bada.s as my old corded makita. Still considering the Atomic for plumbing duties though. But for straight up demo work. This saw is close to perfect. The 4 position bladeholder is a gamechanger. Yes it vibrates. A lot. But all powerful recip saws vibrate. I'm good with the vibrations and noiselevels. Performance more than makes up for it.
Had all DeWalt 36v tools, probably the best cordless sawzall I’ve ever owned. But they had quite the mileage and I wanted to “upgrade” to something newer and LIGHTER. I sold them and bought the flexvolt stuff. Circ saw was a jump in power but I miss the left sided 7.25 blade. As far as the sawzall was concerned... I HATED THE FLEXVOLT. underpowered compared to the 36v, and would stop multiple times in the middle of a cut for “safety”.... wth is a demo tool worth if it sissies off a difficult cut?? And it could only charge the blade 2 ways, not 4. Anyways.... I sold that at a loss and bought the one in this video! Thing is AWESOME. Lots of vibration... like, lots. But that’s more than a fair trade off for the power, size, and 4 way blade orientation. I now find myself reaching for this thing with a tree limb blade on it before my chainsaw.
I have had a corded recip saw for years now. I'm looking for a smaller cordless; my brain keeps swapping between the Milwaukee for power or the Dewalt for comfort and control. I also have to manage my expectations, my Dad was deep into old school Craftsman (when the power tools were covered by their warranty too). I'm a little into both Milwaukee and Dewalt, it's almost like you can't go wrong. I would be really cool to be able to use them both on the same project for a day just to see which one I would naturally gravitate to.
I've had that model for 2 year's, It's not bad. It is more compact for cut outs in between 16 on center bays. But I find it awkward compared to traditional sawzalls. It may be a preference I'm used to. It does have a lot of power and is efficient with battery life. I'm happy with my purchase.
Good review. Let me see if I got this right. You got a tool only; no battery, no charger and no blade. Battery and charger ramps the price up considerably, especially the battery. It looks like it will get most jobs done. Swivel blade good idea. Prices I checked for un-refurbished XR version tool generally ranged from $170 (no battery) to $250 (with one battery and charger) free shipping, two day delivery. (maybe); blades still extra, but not a deal breaker. Still looks like a contender. I won't mention my source, but it's easy to figure and I'm not going to do their advertising unless they get out their checkbook.
You guys are great. Love that you guys test what we ask for. Project farm does that as well. Also TSgear is always open to viewer feedback and suggestion. Ha.
It's on sale at Lowes. I may pick one up and have it sit on my shelf so my wife can yell at me that I have to many tools I don't use. Who knows, we'll see. Thanks for the review.
Regarding the length difference, Up until 6:10 at least, you didn't account for the fact that putting the battery on the one-hander would make it longer, but the other has it on the bottom.
Just found your channel, and I'm subscribed. I just moved into my first home last month, and I'm looking to start a tool kit with electrical tools, and DeWalt looks very appealing. I like the personality you put into the reviews too. Thanks for the video!
I find makita is far better for ergonomics. My drill they moved the for/rev switch 1/4 inch closer to the back and its easier on my hands with the small indent at the top of the handle. Also has very low vibration. Dewalts impact might as well be thrown in the trash the day you get, including their top of the line XR. My ridgid was better.
I've always liked Dewalt stuff. They have a lot of different things for job sight. I gotta admit though been going flex crazy on buying there hole line of stuff
I own this saw and it's my go to for making large rough cuts quickly. Which makes it great for demolition. Almost nothing beats its size, power, and versatility but...

I also own this saw and concur with this comment. Owned it for over a year.
Omg I already have one and love it but damn, such a good idea. I'm gonna buy a second one to duel wield :D
Ha, high quality cuts with a repo saw. Now that’s funny 😂. I suppose you have a precision sledge hammer as well.

I own one this is a best recip ever.
It's spelled recipe... IDIOT!
I own of these and have used it recently for cutting through tree roots, far easier than digging around and attacking with an axe.
Personally one of the reasons I love the dewalt saws is because the 4 way chuck instead of just a 2 way.
Love the four position blade holder, that should be standard on all recip saws
This is so true.
Agree it is absolutely necessary for reciprocating saws I think.
It can't be bub
Been using this saw on job sites for 2 years, it's a game changer for sure.
It vibrates a lot, but every reciprocating saw vibrates a lot. Maybe cutting all day you'd notice it.
This saw has become a legend.
buying it for my husband for Fathers Day !! thank you for the great video !!

Cutting out old headers on a step ladder thing works awesome it’s more comfortable then the bigger ones I got

Atomic is for space...and power?

I trimmed down 2 trees completely down to the trunk, 3,4 ,5 inch branches, it demolished everything with a 9" demo blade
We have these in each truck. After we bought the first one, it replaced all of the other style. Haven't used a corded one in years.

i have 3 dewalt Recip Saws, This one is the smoothest, feel less vibrating, strongest by far

I'm a little into both Milwaukee and Dewalt, it's almost like you can't go wrong. I would be really cool to be able to use them both on the same project for a day just to see which one I would naturally gravitate to.
I have this dewalt saw and it has out lasted 3 of the heavy duty corded Milwaukee saws.
I've had that model for 2 year's, It's not bad. It is more compact for cut outs in between 16 on center bays. But I find it awkward compared to traditional sawzalls. It may be a preference I'm used to. It does have a lot of power and is efficient with battery life. I'm happy with my purchase.
I love mine. You guys should do a Milwaukee holehawg vs the newer dewalt stud and joist drill!
I second this. But is the DeWalt stud drill more comparable to the Hole Hawg or the Super Hawg
The difference between the channel a few years ago compared to nowadays is noticeable
Great video. Looking for a Sawzall for some upcoming content.
I have one of these, vibration transmits like crazy but it cuts great with milwaukee axzall and dewalt blades, not a tool i would use all day tho
You guys are great. Love that you guys test what we ask for. Project farm does that as well. Also TSgear is always open to viewer feedback and suggestion. Ha.
Nice TS Gear, always consider the community!
PF is one of the best at “listening” to viewers. Subbed to both them and VCG.
I bought the brushed version and I got a 5.0 battery with it. But I’ve always wanted the XR since all of my Dewalts are brushless
We use the compact reciprocating saw (sawzall) in every truck. It is so much more powerful.
Its about the ergonomics of the grips on the two .... XR sounds mean though. Love the content!!!!
I'd like to see this go up against the Makita XRJ07ZB, Less stroke but more STM
One of them tools you can’t do without when you get one. Great little saw.
I own it, I love it. Regards from Poland
It's on sale at Lowes. I may pick one up and have it sit on my shelf so my wife can yell at me that I have to many tools I don't use. Who knows, we'll see. Thanks for the review.
Bought my XR for $129 at Home Depot! Love it
Regarding the length difference, Up until 6:10 at least, you didn't account for the fact that putting the battery on the one-hander would make it longer, but the other has it on the bottom.
What blade is that you're using? I just bought one. Thanks for showing I can use it sideways😊
Hi Vince I got the kobalt one with the $199 deal nothing smoking yet maybe u got a defective one I’m impressed just had to buy more batteries for it
Glad you scored cuz!!
Just found your channel, and I'm subscribed. I just moved into my first home last month, and I'm looking to start a tool kit with electrical tools, and DeWalt looks very appealing. I like the personality you put into the reviews too. Thanks for the video!
DeWalt has definitely got "ergonomics" down pat. They always do a fantastic job of making tools feel really good in your hands. #Yellow&BlackAttack
The only Dewalt I am not impressed by is the cordless framing nailer. I think it needs redesign.
The Neebs Gaming community is great... And the guys from Neebs really listen too and engage the community
I think its okay. Often times It stops running and I'm stop to think is the battery not fully charges. If I'm cutting a 2x4 for example it, will stop.
I've always liked Dewalt stuff. They have a lot of different things for job sight. I gotta admit though been going flex crazy on buying there hole line of stuff
