Vocal Coach Reaction: Three performances of GIRL NAMED TOM, The Voice US

  • One of my favourite acts in this season of the Voice US is "Girl Named Tom". They are a trio of siblings originally from Pettisville, Ohio, currently residing in South Bend, Indiana. Having only formed their band in 2019, they started touring straight away, doing 67 shows in 27 cities.
I thought it would be interesting to compare their blind audition, knockout round and Top 13 playoff song. It's always interesting to see the journey a singer/group goes on in a competition like this.
I would love to hear your opinion as well! Why don't you check out this analysis and let me know what YOU think!

I just wanted to say that I can't help but feel touched a bit proud of your deduction that Girl Named Tom grew up in a community that cherishes music. I grew up going to school with them- I've been in some of our community's audition choirs and musicals with Josh, Bekah, and Caleb. Around Pettsiville and the greater Fulton County area, we have lots of Christian congregations that value the beauty of music in praise and worship and I think that is really the reason for the importance we put on music. I'm so proud of them for showing that our love for melodies lives through them as well!

I swear, I felt so compelled to get in my car, drive to Kansas and find that guy working on the line...give him a cup of water and ask him if he needs anything...anything to get him back to his girl. Flawless performance of their flawless rendition of Web's flawless song.

The siblings all were considering becoming physicians. Their grandfather had been a family doctor. Both boys graduated from college with degrees in Bio-Chemistry and Bekah was going to do the same but the pandemic got in the way. In 2017, their dad was diagnosed with cancer so the siblings wanted to remain close with their family and since they had also minored in music at college, and their mom suggested that they form a band, so they did! They are not only incredible singers, they are highly intelligent, and also athletic. You could say they are the full package. I've predicted since their audition that they will win.

Oh absolutely! They are on the track to win! Just knowing their story in general and listening to them deliver amazing performances week after week are the 2 main reasons why they have my support as well as yours. Despite the explosion of positive comments tho, I've seen at least a few people on Instagram say the same old things they've said like "This is The Voice, Not the Voices and groups shouldn't be allowed". I don't know what else to say other than that I get upset whenever I stumble upon a mean comment of that saying which GNT just does not deserve. My point to those haters is, How can you be a fan of the voice if you can't appreciate every artist regardless of whether they are solo or a group. I'm right there with you on your comment and GNT's story is just one of the most inspiring stories that we are talking about and let's just pray that they win this whole thing.

@@RohrbachNotDiscovered You nailed that! I see negative comments on CZcams also. That's nothing new, everyone gets a few of them. I haven't paid enough attention to the others to consider posting anything negative on their music. I would love Kelly to have the win also, if nothing else, to shut Blake up as he brags about all his wins. The positives on GNT far outweigh the negatives with the numbers of likes on many of the comments. I really do hope we've found the winner. Song choice is so key. I was sitting here hitting my imaginary button even sooner than Kelly hit hers for them. I have yet to hear them with a flaw in anything. I guess it's that sibling thing again.

Creep was the best performance of that week, by far. The song has been endlessly covered because of how strong its chords and melody are, and how emotive it is. They embodied the essence of the song while remaking it in their spirit and musical centre. What they do that is so special is they don't use the songs to showcase their voices; they use their voices to showcase the songs. They approach their songs as artists and musicians, not as contestants. That's why their performances resonate with people and why their arrangements and approach to each song are so varied.

I so agree. They could change The Voice. After all these years, this show - with its annoying emphasis on the coaches - has never really produced any truly standout stars. This season has a very high standard overall but GNT is something different and truly outstanding - a genuine musical experience. I hope the music business gives them the space and respect they deserve. And the time is right for music like this.

@@JohanBesterYourVocalCoach I also thought Creep was a poor choice for their voices and personalities, not that Bekah can't sing anything, but the sweetness and purity that comes through with her voice did not fit the song. I assumed it was their coach's encouragement to perform something completely different and show versatility, but this was not the right way. Usually the singers who win this competition are the big-voiced "belters" and the twangy country music singers. Girl Named Tom is my favorite act to ever appear on the show, but I really don't expect them to finish in first place for the reasons stated. I hope I'm wrong.

Familial voices do so blend together. Good voices help even more. This trio has it. Also, on an organ, there is pedal that is used to control the "swell" of the sound, allowing a crescendo and climax. These singers have learned that mode. Beautiful job with all three songs.

The last two songs were new to them, while they have performed "Hopelessly Hoping" (2.75M Blind audition YT views) and "Wichita Lineman" (1.1M YT views) many times. They were very confident in both of those, and the arrangements were spot on. Although I also thought their performance of "Dust in the Wind" was very good, and it reached #13 on iTunes (no one else charted) and has been viewed almost 870K times on YT. No other act in this Live round is anywhere close to that. I believe they will be voted into the Finals, no matter what they choose to perform. Their version of "Girl Crush/Like I'm Gonna Lose You" is Stunning! While 90% of the song features Bekah, it is one of the best things they do. They also have a very jazzy version of "Billie Jean"; somewhat similar to what Angelina Jordan did with that song, although not as purely "jazz' as her version. I belief that GNT, Wendy, and Hailey are the favorites to reach the Finals, although if someone chooses a song that doesn't resonant with the public or has a mediocre performance, that could easily change. My pick to win it all is GNT. Mainly because, based on their YT views, I think they have the biggest fan base. I also believe they have an excellent opportunity for a very successful career, as does Wendy.

I enjoy your comments. I too really love their harmonies and how tight they are. You pointing out how their pronunciations being so similar which makes the harmonies even more pleasant to hear was really well said! Often I don't enjoy listening to Vocal Coach reactions simply because many of coaches seem to think they have to find things to be critical of instead of pointing out the positive. I too was not a fan of the Creep performance. It felt like they had tried to show their diversity, but in the process lost what makes them so incredibly special. Thank you for your insights.

Agreed. Not only the close, tight harmonies... but few have that tight volume "swell" control also to crescendo up and down during key parts of the song. The only performance I was "critical" of was Dust in the Wind. They needed a little more time working on that one, but that is just an opinion (I saw others were gushing about it). Cheers!

I agree Mark. Through all "The Voice" rounds so far, GNT has received the most views on YT, and "Dust in the Wind" has received the most by far from the round of 13. Part of that is because so many people love that song. Although, without the violin riff in the middle it's not quite the same. There harmony and arrangements seem better on the songs they have performed many times: "Hopelessly Hoping" and "Wichita Lineman". So I hope they will go back to their library of song and choose something they have done before and have great confidence in. And of course, choose something that will resonant with the viewing public.

All these complaints about their performance of ‘Creep’.. I think you’re missing the point that they HAVE to showcase their abilities outside of their country/folk genre to be able to have a shot at winning votes from the widest possible audience. Not everybody LIKES their chosen genre. It’s a strategic move and Kelly Clarkson played it brilliantly. EVERY season somebody does that song on these shows b/c it was HUGELY popular but very few can pull it off. And it’s obvious that GNT liked it as well b/c they recreated it as almost a gentle love song. They nailed it.
ALL the contestants are forced to try this strategy to some extent but nobody else has been able to sing outside of their genre this season very well at all.

I absolutely agree with you in regards to the choice to sing Creep. Ariana Grande apparently didn't understand the band. The band doesn't always get to choose what they sing. Sometimes they do, and sometimes the mentor chooses , or maybe they let the audience choose. I'll bet Ariana can sing the hell out of that song . I've heard it covered numerous times, and have only ever heard it sung by someone who has a really strong voice. It's a real treat to listen to Haley Reinhart sing it with Postmodern Jukebox. All three singers in A Girl Named Tom have a nice voice and can sing solos, but none of them should have ever attempted Creep. I'm so glad Ariana didn't win them from the beginning.

I think the difference in some of the sound is the difference of the show being live or taped. It seems like every year when the shows go live there is a difference in how some performers sound. I also agree that they had more time to perfect the first two songs and not as much time for the other three. They have a couple fun videos on theri youtube page where the arrange a song in a hour. They have talent and a future in music either together or apart.

From what I’ve seen on CZcams GNT previously recorded Wichita Lineman and Helplessly Hoping so it’s probably more practiced repertoire than Creep and Dust in the Wind. After hearing GirlNamedTom's blind audition I listened to many of their CZcams videos. While I enjoyed their other songs, the harmonies weren't as tight on their CZcams vids, as expected. I'm so grateful for The Voice and their high production values and tech used to balance or emphasize their voices so that we could fully enjoy their harmonies. (I assume the sound techs balanced their voices since they each had their own mic and the harmonies were so close to perfect).
Creep was also my least favorite cover. Agreed that it was a poor choice for them. Sabotage by Kelly?
Dust in the Wind was also good, but the arrangement wasn't in the same league as Wichita Linemen and Helplessly Hoping.
I wish they could put out full length versions of Wichita Linemen and Helplessly Hoping with the same tight harmonies and excellent production values.
